Hello everyone!
Inspired by the deeds of several other LAFers (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=87146.0) I decided to start my own GoT-themed SAGA army. Mormont came to my mind, and although i won't ever reach the incredible level of HvM (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=41342.0) with his Impetus army i still think i can give some of my own to Bear Island.
As for now, the army will proxy Capetian Franks or Normans, both fielding heavy cavalry and lethal crossbows.
The Band will be lead by the three-times-world-champion of badassery Lady Lyanna Mormont, and will field both fierce Mormont soldiers with some Glovers as well, that after the Battle of the Bastards lost their grip and offered their Motte militia to aid the hunting party.
What they are hunting... well, it's up to them: Wildlings, giants, Boltons, bears, beavers, Boltons... did I mention Boltons?
Anyways, the final army will field:
12 mounted hearthguards with banner - Lyanna heavy guard.
12 foot soldiers with banner - Bear Fighters. They do have 2H weapons, but for the Franks rules they'll have to be counted as regular warriors.
12 foot lancers with banner - Deepwood Motte Militia. A mere apologize for the previous backstabbing by the Glovers.
8 crossbowmen - Bear Hunters.
Additionally, 12 longbowmen (levies) - reinforcement from the Northern Mountain Clans - mostly Burleys.
I've started laying some colours on the longbowmen, to warm up and test colour schemes and bases. Since - so they say - winter is coming, i've chosen an autumnal look.

Some pics of the other WIPS so far: still missing all the fur, but still.

Here a close-up of the three banners (the two infantry units and the heavy cavalry). The flags are made in resin - still have to produce a good tutorial for those - and details are from various kits.

Feedback are appreciated. :)

PS: I made (badly) my own dice too!

Cheers again! :)

I love the autumn leave bases. It's hard not being a fan of the Mormont ladies, right? I made two for my Stark retinue.

That's so true. :) I'm preparing the horse and the "tutor" for lyanna, but i have to find a proper female child on horse. Suggestions?

Well now, there's a coincidence. I just happen to have one of those sitting on my desk being painted for a certain female-orientated miniature supplier. And she may just bear an uncanny resemblance to Lady Mormont. Keep your powder dry for a week or so and more will follow!

Very very good start !!!! Were do the shields and flags come from ?

Nowt yet, like I say, give it a week or so for me to colour her in.

Thanks! It's all resin, cast by myself. The shields are a veery quick sculpt, but does its job.
The flags are done without a mold, just pouring resin on a flat surface, cutting it in shape and bending it before curing. Works every time! :)

aww, i'll wait. :(

I have the Oldhammer Repanse de Lyonesse miniature and thought I'd use her as a young lady Mormont.

Thanks for the Info on the shields.

Thanks for the Info on the shields.
Thanks to you! Your thread is very inspiring! :)
I'm trying to keep the style more omogeneous (besides, i don't have all those other kits and sprues) but your models are pretty much what i'm after!
-
Just seen on the the Bad Squiddo FB page, the 'Jarl Letty' (presumably the best a man can get) miniature/s (mounted and foot versions) are available now and will be at the show tomorrow (Derby is it?).
-
Nice that you like my Figures Sangennaru
-
I'm now building the first hearthguards, and i've completed the first one.
I'm now really not sure about the small flags on the lances: Do you think it's an appropriate fitting for mormonts? or maybe leaving the bare lances is better for the setting?

They're great! Imo there is no such thing as too many flags in a Westerosian army!
-
Nice work. I like the pennons :)
-
So be it then!
Here's the first point of mounted hearthguards! Bear hunters, all of them, including a bear-trap on the back of the bannerman!

Released this weekend at the show, and online from whenever they are painted, no pressure. Muahahahaha...

Nice! I really like the look of those Agincourt heads on the WOTR cavalry bodies.
And I dunno if it's just me, but about only half the pics are showing?

Thanks!
About the pics: i really don't know why but it appears that the pictures (being hosted on OVH) only shows at the second refresh.
Anyone more expert in webhosting could suggest me how to fix this? :(

They look pretty good so far. I would say that the pennants on the lances seem a little out of place for the Northern houses outside of the Manderlys who are a Southern House living in the North in exile. One thing I have done in order to provide some variety for my Freys is I have their sworn houses mixed in with them so I have Frey, Haigh, Charleton, and Erenford. This makes painting take longer, but it makes things interesting. I'm taking pictures of them today so you should be seeing a thread soon. I don't believe that House Mormont has any sworn houses, but they may be sworn to another house, such as the Glovers.

What you say is true, but as you stated mormont don't have sworn houses. I doubt that they would ever sworn to glovers, as a matter of fact some of the militia in the band is from glovers (with sworn houses such as burleys, forresters), as an apology for the act of cowardry during the Battle of the Bastards.
I feel that the pennants are a little out of place as well. I might remove them when painting them. :)
Thanks for the input! :)

Thanks captain! I'm a real disaster with greenstuff, i feel much better with plaster and balsa! :(

Very nice additions!
-
Thanks!
I've completed the eight knights, and added some fur to the feet of the horses as well!
Something like this:

More pics will follow tonight.

This is all just great Sangennaru :)
I'm loving the 'in motion' effect you have on the Cavalry, with the pose of the lances, the fluttering of pennants and the movement captured in the cloaks :)
That Bear Trap does look dangerous......
Cheers

Wooly horses done, all the eight nobles are ready for the painting. Maybe a few moldlines to be trimmed, here and there.

Those cavalry look fabulous - really full of energy and the detailing is great, and I'm dead impressed with your banner making technique!
I also like the shot of them charging past the ruined hab-block in the background across the blasted cutting mat........ looks quite post-apocalyptic.

Thank you! :) I should REALLY do a tutorial about that technique. =) I'm even slowly reuploading the site...

Awesome work on your conversions. :-*
I really love this unit, and I hope to see the painted version soon !
-
Awesome cavalry !!!
-
Very dynamic. They look great, Jack.
I've added you into the LAF GoT compendium thread :)
-
Thank you all!
I'm rather proud of my horsemen, i'll have to let them dry a little bit more before painting them! Resin can be bitchy, sometimes.
Meanwhile, tonight i'll have a match, and i'll be able to field them! :)

Oh, sweet! :)

The Mounted Warriors are WONDERFULLY dynamic & BEAUTIFULLY converted creations. OUTSTANDING WORK!

Hello everyone!
While the horses are being - slowly - painted, it's time to update with the latest months of sculpting. Well, most of it was meant for White Dragon Miniatures (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=86755.0), Spectre Miniatures (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10209854289286419&set=gm.1685881438104328&type=3&theater) and a few personal projects (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=96665.0), but i still found time to build some good scenery for my wolfswood forest.
Actually, the setting is more an abandoned siege field: palisades, ruined walls, corpses and burned buildings.
In chronological order, the first ruin piece was sculpted on January 2016, but i apparently never released the pics on the forum:
Quite some time was spent on this sculpt, and the result is satisfying but imho doesn't justify the 6-8 hours of work. C&C welcome, of course.
Then, some cheaper and quicker palisades:
Quite practical but nothing innovative, i'm aware.
Lastly, after several other walls experiment (5 failed tests, to be exactly) i think i found a good compromise to produce realistic looking walls. The work is still wip, and will be molded for resin casting tonight. The final cast is always MUCH more truthful than the greens.
Any kind of comment and question is warmly welcome! i don't mind compliments but constructive critics are far more precious!
Cheers,
Jack
-
Little update:
The first cast is a success! I'd definitely work on more walls, producing a full set of ruined stone structures!
-
Oooh that's pretty great!!
-
How go the Mormonts? I'm very interesting in seeing them painted up!
-
After a mere two years and a half, i've fully painted one of the riders. Very happy with the result, although slightly late.
Hopefully, i'll manage to use them both for Saga and for Round of Fire.
-
Well, better late than never as we know. Looks great!
-
Ooooh, what a neat thread I've missed. Some beautiful work in here.
-
Whoa! Welcome back! And good work on the rider too!
-
Wow! The knight is great, love the de-saturated painting :-*
-
gorgeous
-
Thank you all! :)
I had a "group shot" but it turned out it was out of focus. I'll make a better one tonight.
So far i've got 8 archers and one knight done, another 7 knight and about 30-40 footmen to do... the road ahead is pretty long!
-
Well, I just found out that the 40mm base I made is on a 4mm tall plastic base, while i'm basing everything on the new 3mm tall plastic ones.
I guess I had to make new ones.
I know, i'm a bit overzealous on bases, but it's really stronger than me.
Cheers
Jack
-
This is just stunning. I can't believe I missed this thread. (Makes me wonder how many other gems there are out in the LAF wilderness waiting to be discovered). I really hope you get the chance to finish this force - you have the holy trinity of modelling, painting and photographing skills.
Following with great interest.
-
That rider is awesome!! :o
-
You're all too kind! I'll try to do more soon!

Thank you! My problem with painting is that i'm dreadfully slow...Which really slows down the modelling+photography combo. :(
-
Some update on the bases: Now the 3mm thick bases are done for the cavalry. I've done 9, so a possible mounted warlord will have a ready base if needed. :)
Still only one horseman is fully painted, but with the new bases i'll be motivated to do the rest!

I wish. But the pack I bought from Antenocity about 10 years ago is still half-full, 4.50£ well spent.

Really interesting and useful, thank you very much!

Thanks! :)
So, my wildly unpainted and unprepared band will see the table tonight at the club!
I'm trying to motivate a few fellow players to jump in with SAGA. It is a lightweight game compared to most of what we played, but if this helps attracting AoS players or such...
-
The painted ones look amazing so far! Thanks for posting the basing tutorial too!
Silly question but who's your leader character in the center? Looks like an interesting pose!
-
Is that the CMON dude who's wiping his sword clean? I thought I saw a pose like that.
-
Thank you all!

It's actually a modded model from the same Perry Agincourt kit. I just cut and rotated a wrist, then added on the other hand a sheath. It's pretty simple to do and gives an interesting personality pose! :)
-
Some update with the infantry bases (and the last four archer levies done too!)
The technique used is the same of the tutorial of the previous page. In fact, i found following my own tutorial very useful to remember what indeed i did to make them in the first place!
-
As good a reason to make tutorials as any ;)
Archers look great, and bases lovely as always.

Bella :-*

Looking great! Keep up the good work!

Thank you all!
Speaking of which, I just realized I haven't posted here the painted horseman!

Did some wet-blending on the horse flesh, the rest is pretty standard painting.
Cheers,
Jack

Really excellent work, on all levels: sculpting, painting, basing. Very dynamic.
You're on a roll! Go for more!
-
your cavalry are just fantastic :-*
-
Thank you guys! I might start another horse or two tonight. First i have some 6mm goodies to paint though!
-
Love the bases, and you’ve got a really consistent look for those Mormonts
:)

Thank you! Consistency really is what i'm after, i'm glad i hit the nail! =) Compared to other projects the painting quality isn't as good, but i tried to focus on a more consistent look instead.

Some updates on a castle I've started about a year ago. Mostly made in XPS, with a considerably lower detail compared to my usual works, but also much bigger and quicker to build.
These were the older sections:
and these are some sneak peeks of the new ones, being built (including wooden battlements on top of the walls)

C&C welcome. I have eight xbowmen waiting to be finished too, but i'm giving priority to my Round of Fire: Legends (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=111565) manual i'm writing.
Cheers,
Jack

Thanks! Well, the technique is hardly original, there are some excellent tuorials online from "Mistral" and from "Tabletop Workshop", if you want to check them out. I was working at this well before finding out their guides, but they are very good nonetheless.
Love that figure
Cheers! I should have another seven to do. Let's see when i'll manage to put the final paint on them. :)
Awesome!
Cheers, thanks! :)
All in all, i'm a bit distracted by painting higher-quality miniatures for Round of Fire right now.
But as soon as i'll play a game of Saga or two at the club i'll be motivated again to return on the Mormont army.
And the castle will grow!
Cheers,
Jack

So much lovely stuff on this thread!
I'm embarrased to say I've missed it up until now but following closely!
Are your walls available anywhere? I could use quite a few of those.

No, these are just for a personal project, and not with a very high level of details nether.
I did sculpt a set of low walls for Fenris as a part of the Rubble City kickstarter last year! But that's another scale of walls, of course. :)
-
Damn...love that castle wall section ...keep us posted with more photos
:)

Cheers! Will do! :)
