Hi to all,
As advertised earlier in my X-Wing thread, I have another Star Wars related project going on. As it says in the title, it's a 28mm project. I'm assembling platoon-sized forces of different factions to fight small battles on a 4'x4' surface with the occasional Necromunda-style skirmish game . I'll probably be using the old WEG Star Wars Miniatures Battles rules because they can easily be adapted for both types of game. I'm mostly using old WOTC bendy figures (with a few Imperial Assault models to break the monotony) and most if not all of my scenery will be scratchbuilt. The project is still in its early stages, with much to add to it in the future, so if you like what you see, there's plenty more to come.
I'll start with the minis. Here's the start of my Rebel Naval Trooper platoon.
All WOTC bendy figs. As you can see, I'm not the best painter around here, but they look fine from 3' away... I've used a Sullustan Scout as an officer. I like how he fits with the rest of the squad. The 3 identical figures at the back will probably be replaced in the future. They are way too big compared to the rest of the troopers. I kept the bases really simple. I might add a few details to them, but not too much. Also, since the WEG rules use facing, I've painted the frontal arc in blue to eliminate potential disputes in future games...
Next, Imperial Forces.

They look better in real life than on these pictures, but as I said, I'm not the best painter around here. One thing's for sure, they look better than their pre-painted former selves. This platoon is almost complete. I modified the two Scout Troopers to try to get them out of the stupid pose they were stuck in. Again, not the best job, but a definite improvement.
The (very small) start of my Fringe faction.

I might have to redo the paint on this one. I was trying to give him a paint scheme reminescent of my Mobquet Medium Cargo Hauler. Mission accomplished, the colors are spot on. The only thing I hadn't forseen is that it would make him look like he was wearing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume as a flight suit...
Some Fauna.
I like this little guy. He's from Reaper. He might be a bit too "Mythos" looking for Star Wars, but since he'll probably end up being more of a counter than anything else, he'll do.
On to the scenery. Here's my only painted piece (for the moment)
Some kind of communication antenna. Built out of a bunch of odds and ends. I'm not that happy with the paint job, but it'll do. Hopefully, it'll be less visible amongst the rest of my "smuggler's outpost" terrain. Speaking of which, here's the rest of what I have built so far. They're at various degrees of completion.

More antennae, lots of crates, curved walls that form a 24'' wide circular landing pad when assembled. Here's a few shots with minis so that you'll get a sense of scale.

All of these crates probably need to be moved around. What better way to do that than by using a truck. So I started building one. Here's a few pics.

The Speeder Truck isn't finished yet, but you get the idea.
Finally, I needed a major villain for my campaign, a worthy adversary for Alliance and Empire alike...

Just kidding. Comments are welcome, more to come later!

Look at the size of that thing!
-
So I started building one
The speeder looks really good. What's your building technique?
-
Splendid thread 8) 8) 8)
Can't get enough Star Wars :D
Looking forward to seeing what you have in store.
cheers
James
-
If that speeder is scratch built out of plasticard as it appears, I am seriously impressed!
-
WOW love the speeder truck :-* :-* :-*
-
Gah! It's the Death Gonk!!!!
-
Ah, my waiting has paid off. :o ;)
Loving that speeder and the occasional scenery. :D
-
Lovely work, sir.
8) 8)
And that speeder.....
:-* :-* :-*
...and the Gonk!
lol lol
-
splendid stuff, great work on the speeder. Is the battlewarmechGonk scratch built too?
I've just spent the weekend painting a platoon of WEG Stormtroopers, there is a wonderful Star Wars vibe at the moment...
-
Thanks for the comments, much appreciated.
The Speeder Truck is entirely scratchbuilt out of plasticard except for some detailing on the engines. As far as technique goes, I wouldn't know how to describe it. I can tell you that the curved sections at the front were built a bit like airplane wings, with curved struts covered with "panels". I tend to layer the details on with increasingly thinner plasticard cut to shape. Also, I tend to draw a lot of sketches before starting to build. It helps to figure out what goes where and how it'll all fit. The Speeder Truck is about 75% finished. The front section is bare-boned and still needs a lot of detailing. It also needs a weapon option, a pintle-mounted blaster or something. I'm thinking of using magnets so that it can be removed or added as needed. It could also use a pilot.
The Gonk is also entirely scratchbuilt. As you've probably guessed, it's not meant to be used in the game. It's scaled at 1/18 and was built for fun. I used the design sketches from the Rebels TV show to build it. By the way, if you haven't discovered that Star Wars treasure trove yet, run over to starwars.com and check out the episode guides for both the Clone Wars and Rebels. Tons of inspiration and cool designs.
Anyway, thanks again for the comments. I'll be sure to post pics of my progress.

Crates and the lifter need casting immediately sir!!!! :D
-
Believe me, Commander, I would have LOVED to be able to cast those crates. They're basically little 15mm wooden cubes I got from the dollar store, 48 for a buck, if I remember right. Each of them was then covered with 31 little pieces of styrene. There's like 2 square feet of styrene cut to bare millimeters on them! My wrist still hurts!

Easy resin cast job tbh. Do it!! ;)
-
Amazing stuff!
-
Great stuff! You definitely can't get enough Star Wars goodness.
-
You hand made all those crates individually? With wood cubes and plasticard? They look amazing, but I think you're insane! The speeder looks terrific too.

Seriously! That's an insane amount of work. They do look very distinctively Star Wars tho.

They also look like a certain companion from Portal...

SotF, funny you should say that, my geeky buddy at work mentionned it today. I had no clue, I've never played Portal.

It's worth at least a playthrough and its rather easy to get ahold of.
-
Impressive work mate. Upstanding. Congrats for the love and effort you put on each piece.
Crates and the lifter need casting immediately sir!!!! :D
OH, YES, PLEASE. COUNT ON ME!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Again, congratulations.
-
Fantastic thread! :-*
I'd be interested in getting some crates too - they're crate great!
-
Time for an update. I've been incredibly busy IRL since the last time I posted, so pardon the bit of threadomancy.
Let's get to it then...
These are the core elements of two of my platoons. They are Rebel Naval Troopers and Imperial Srormtroopers. I've got Rebel Commandos and Pirates in the works. If everything goes smoothly, you should see the last two in 2018...
Next up, some jungle flora.
These were made with dollar store plastic plants. I know some of you don't really like the look of these in general, but they suit my needs.
I've also managed to paint some stuff that was already built.
Curved walls and beacon/antenna thingies. They're part of my "smuggler's-outpost-on-a-jungle-planet" project. Speaking of which, here's the painted contraband...
I might have gone a bit over the top with the weathering, but I figure metal crates in a smuggler's outpost on a jungle planet would look pretty scruffy after a few hours. Plus, it looks Star Wars-ish. If you like them and would like to get your own, check out Crooked Dice's webstore. I saw something there that's pretty close to them. It's really similar to these. So similar in fact that you could think they were made by the same person... ;) ;) ;)
How do you carry those crates? With a Speeder Truck or a Repulsor Skid, of course!
I had a lot of fun with these. The truck is an original design but the skid was directly lifted from Star Wars Rebels.
Finally, some group pictures.
Not the best shots, but since I haven't gotten to building my terrain tiles yet, these will have to suffice. They'll give you an idea of the scale, I guess. Anyway, I hope you guys like them, and as usual, comments are welcome. I'll try to post an update in less than six months!
-
Awesome work - great looking miniatures complimented by superb terrain.
-
Looking great. I especially like the skid.
-
Splendid :D
cheers
James
-
wow, just wow... :o
-
Brilliant!
:-* :-*
And really glad to see that you are still at it.

-
Great job sir :)
-
Shame u didn't cast the skid. Awesome work
-
All of those crates look fantastic! I wasn't sure about the bright colors at first, but they grow on you. Plus, jungle planet. You're gonna need some way to spot them from a distance. The truck is wonderful!!! Great scratch build. Great paint job. Great project altogether.
-
Wow. Just wow!
-
Great thread!
-
Thanks to all for the nice response. There's more in the works.
Michka, the bright colors on the crates were lifted from real-world containers. They tend to be quite bright. They do look good in a jungle setting, though. It helps that I looked at pics of the favelas around Rio de Janeiro for inspiration.
Commander Vyper, I know, I might even have sold a few! It wasn't built to be cast in the first place, so parts of it were impossible to mold or cast in resin. Parts of it are 1/4 of a millimeter thin. I'll know better for my next build!
-
Amazing work and very inspiring. Thanks
-
Happy New Year to all!
Here's the latest update on my (slooooooowly) ongoing 28mm Star Wars project. The upcoming release of Star Wars Legion has me quite motivated to pick up the pace on this one. The game itself looks like a card-and-funny-dice mess, but the figures seem good, so this thread shouldn't go dead for 6 months. Anyway, to the update.
My bush spaceport needed a few buildings. I built this one as a test/prototype. It's supposed to be a modular, prefab building that would be air-dropped to the chosen location and serve as barracks, control tower, storage or any other plausible use. It's far from finished.A lot of external detailing is missing and it hasn't been painted yet. As usual, it's all styrene.
With some WOTC figs for scale...
-
Next up, transportation.
My Stormtrooper Platoon needed rides. Since I'm a big fan of the Rebels TV show, I liked the idea of building this (canon) guy:
Not the greatest looking vehicle in the canon, but the way it's portrayed and used in the show, I figure it's supposed to be the equivalent of an Opel Blitz, so kick-ass aesthetics aren't essential. Here's the (unfinished) end result.
I like the way it turned out, which is good because, as I mentioned earlier, I have a platoon to move around...
As usual, comments are welcome.
-
The prefab building is cool, and the vehicle even more so, and you just made four of them! o_o
-
That is some seriously good styrene work.
:-* :-* :-*
You really should consider getting them cast up.
:D
-
ooo that's nice.
:)
-
See, now you're just showing off!
How do you get the crisp lines and repeatability for multiple builds?
-
Hey Damas,
For the crisp lines, it's just a matter of precise cutting and sanding off every edge. Styrene tends to "bulge" up when cut. I use cheap nail files to sand off that bulge and smooh the edges. Basically, the lines look clean because every edge is very slightly rounded.
As for repeatability, it's very easy but time consuming. I basically make every component 4 times and build the 4 models at the same time. For example, the 3 "doors" on the middle section's sides. A single door is made up of 5 little pieces, so when it was time to build them, I had to cut 120 little pieces of plastic to assemble 24 doors which I then glued to the 4 transports. As I said, it's quite easy but time-consuming...
Hope that helps.
-
This is absolutely amazing!!! I do a lot of plasticard work, so I have some idea how much work this is. This is just stunning. And that transport is one of my favorite vehicles. Bravo!
-
These are superb. Love the prefab. I am also in awe of your patience and precision.
-
They are very good.
-
Stunning work and dedication :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Your plastic card skills are amazing
I am blown away the how you can repeat the models exactly the same
-
Wow, thanks for the comments. If I needed additional motivation to keep working on this thing, I just got it. I have stuff in the pipeline, so I'll try to update this thread BEFORE this year's over...I have a few more vehicles almost finished (well, one vehicle in six copies, but you probably guessed that by now). I might break one of my self imposed rules and post progress pics. Any interest in that?
-
Seriously impressive work!
Looking forward to more. 👍
-
The troop transport is wonderful. I love seeing your styrene builds. Keep it up.
-
A-W-E-S-O-M-E work !!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
please, cast 'em and i'll be beside your door
:P lol lol lol lol lol
-
Love to see some WIP pics
Yes please is the answer to your question
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
As mentionned earlier, I wasn't intending to post WIP pics of my stuff here, but since it seems to interest you guys, here we go.
After finishing the Imperial Transports, I figured I might give my Rebels some support too. Since they're more of a commando force, transports weren't as appealing of an option. I once again turned to WW2 for inspiration and decided to build some kind of speeder jeep that could act as armed recon or command vehicle. I did a few quick sketches and started to build. Here's what I came up with.
3/4 Front
(https://i.imgur.com/lvRZ8jC.jpg)
3/4 Back
(https://i.imgur.com/bU2IUE2.jpg)
Underside
(https://i.imgur.com/vkaMJjn.jpg)
They're not finished. In fact, most of the parts still aren't glued to the may body. Some important details are still missing too, like engine nacelles, weapon platforms or backseats, radio equipment, etc. Final detailing is also missing.
As mentionned, I once again built more than one (in this case, six). 3 of them are going to be armed recon (like WW2 airborne jeeps, with a laser instead of a .50cal), 1 will be command (with radio equipment) and 2 will be civilian (with different detailing and a regular backseat). Here's what the bunch of 'em look like (with FFG Stormtroopers for scale)
More to come soon. As always, comments are welcome.
-
Amazing stuff :)
-
Woah! Not sure how I missed this thread, but nice work! :)
-
More cracking builds :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
:o :o :o That's Great man....Super Vehicles outstanding job here!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
o_o
Wow!
I'm in total admiration of the detail and precision in your work. I struggle to get two parts of the same thing to look the same never mind two parts of the same thing six times over.
-
theses are really nice indeed
-
Most impressive! :o
-
Amazing work.
-
I, for one, really enjoy WIP pictures and seeing the process behind people's work. So, please do keep posting them.
Love the new stuff.
-
Thank you for the work in progress photos. Those are quite inspiring. Are the rounded things at the back control fins?
I have to ask, what tools do you use working with styrene? I've only recently discovered there are more tools then just X-acto blades, pencils and metal rulers.
-
Thanks again for the positive comments. This post is going to be a bit more "technical" since there seems to be interest in the techniques I use. I took advantage of my brand new tablet to snap step-by-step pics of my latest progress, so I'll be able to describe in more detail how I build teeny-tiny spaceships and such... Here we go.
With important or fiddly bits, I'll generally start with a mock-up. I use 14pts card and sticky tape to build these. It's faster and cheaper than a full build. I find it quite helpful with establishing sizes and placement. In this case, I'm making the engine nacelles.
I then measure and draw the pieces I'll need. In this case, the main body of the nacelles requires 4 different pieces for the basic "box". I used 0.50mm styrene.
You'll notice there's a complete one one the bottom of the last pic. I forgot to take a pic with the little 1mm x 1mm square styrene lengths that I use as supports, so I cheated a bit and used some of the extra pieces I always make (experience speaking here... :)). I then take out the glue and start assembling.
Okay, first step's finished. I'll split this technical interlude between different posts, so step two'll be coming in a few minutes.
-
Okay, next steps.
The engines need air intakes. Not because I know how they work, just because it looks cooler. To achieve the look I want, I use Evergreen textured styrene sheets (.050'' Clapboard, to be exact). I measured the "hole" in front of the boxes again and chopped up little bits of the clapboard styrene.
Next, I made little strips of 0.25mm to close the curved "hole in the back of the nacelles. I made them slightly longer than the space they had to cover. The extra length gives me grip to be able to pull the styrene tightly over the hole when gluing. Here's the assembly in detail:
1. Glue clapboard and part of the strip that doesn't cover the hole.
2. When it's all dry, pull firmly on the strip and glue it in place over the hole.
3. Cut and sand the excess plasticard. With a little patience, you end up with a really nice, clean shape.
Here you go, second step's over. In this case, though, I needed to repeat ( I usually do...)
Final steps in the next post.
-
Okay, let's finish this.
The engine nacelles are almost done, they just need to be attached to the main body. I'll need to build struts. Here's what I came up with:
Impressive, uh? It's basically a 3mm x 3mm strip of styrene, with an angle cut at one end. I added a 3mm half-round at the opposite end and a piece of 0.5mm styrene topped with a short section of 1.5mm half-round. Nothing too fancy since I need to make 12 of them. Once again, I cheated a bit and montaged the last step.
Here's what it looks like once in place. They look all crooked on the pics because I used bluetac to keep them in place for the pics. I'm still waiting a bit before gluing them in place.
I hope that was helpful or interesting. I'll post more "regular" updates in the future because I'm already a slow builder and this takes even longer.
Oh, almost forgot. Michka, here's the tool I use. It's pretty much the same as you use yourself.
BLADES: small blade, medium blade, compass cutter, big blade, way-too-big scribing blade.
Files and glue.
MEASURING ruler, CUTTING ruler (experience again!), mechanical pencil and eraser.
I'll post some more soon.

Very well done. :-* :-*~
Following with great interest.
-
Great tutorial. Those are going to be nifty little skycars :-*
-
Sir, the construction skills are off the chart. My first reaction was amazed you built 6 landing craft, but once you've taken all the time to create a mockup it makes sense to just knock out a few in a production line.
Great looking setup, ill watch with interest. 8)
Cheers
Matt
-
Thank you for the tutorial. I love your process. I do use most of those tools too, but it never occurred to me to label my rulers cutting vs. measuring. And I just found the delights of Tamiya Extra Thin glue. It's now my favorite thing.
-
Great thread, must admire your patience and precision. Looking forward to seeing future developments :)
-
thanks for the tutorial

Update time. I managed to work on my speeders a bit this week, but yesterday's big snowfall cut my building time. It's been more shovel than craft knife for the past day or so. Still, here's where I'm at right now.
The backseats for the civilian and command versions are complete.

I've also worked on the armed recon versions. I added details to the hardware behind the front seats and I built the blasters. I haven't glued the weapons in place, they're just bluetacked in place on the last pics.

nice job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I did presume that the blasters would go just behind the front seat so that someone in the back could fire it?
-
Hey Gamer Mac,
It was the original plan, but I decided to make the gun remote controlled from the passenger seat, kinda like the harpoon gun on the snowspeeders. I'll probably add a targeting display on the console in front of the passenger seat. It'll further differentiate the armed recon version from the civilian one.
-
What an amazing thread this has become.
These 'How-To's' are brilliant, such patience and precision.
:-* :-*
Really appreciate the time taken to show us the process.
Thank you, sir.

I must try to make a speeder one of these days and yours are certainly an inspiration. :-* :-*

Annnnnd I'm back.
I didn't have much time for hobby stuff in 2018, but 2019 is a bit better on that front so far. I haven't built or painted much for my 28mm Star Wars project since my last posts here. Here's what I managed to do.
Two sad, unfinished conversion jobs... Oh well, you have to (re)start somewhere! My incredible dislike of The Last Jedi could partially be to blame (in my Top Ten of SW movies, it currently sits between The Star Wars Holiday Special and the first Ewok movie, Caravan of Courage, which are both turds if you're wondering). I did, however, manage to build a 1/1 Jawa for Halloween...
Anyway, more to come soon. That Jawa is putting the pressure on his dad to have a game of SW-flavored Galactic Heroes... :D
-
Absolutely stunning scratch builds!
Cannot wait to see more. Consider me subscribed :D
-
Totally agree with The Last Jedi comments. It doesn’t fill me with a new hope for the next/newest film! Maybe The Mandalorian TV series will give you the inspiration you need!
Great work on those conversions. I don’t recognise the base models you’ve used..... ???
-
Wow, your plasticard skills are amazing! : :o
