After so many medieval plastic boxes arrives at the market, it was difficult to keep myself from buying lots of 'em and creating some forces for so called "large skirmish".
So, here we have Vittorio Grimani of house Grimani (poor venetian noble house at that time), who tries to make some fortune on some european theater of war...

...and his trustworthy (or not so trustworthy at all) guys with pointy-sticks and shooty-sticks under fancy-dressed and badly shaved captain Domiano.

Bigger (but not that clear, unfortunately) pic of winged-lion banner:

More 14....... high medieval stuff to come, keep looking for updates ;)
-
Just gorgeous.
-
Looks great well done

Nicely done!

Stunning!!
-
Ooh, fantastic!
-
Very nice 8) 8) 8)
-
Very nice! That banner is gorgeous!
-
Excellent stuff.
-
very nice indeed
-
Excellent painting on those minis and great back story too.
-
Thank you so much, gentlemen! I'm very glad that you enjoy my paintings!
So, here we are again, more venetian reinforcements!
Handgun itself is a deadly and effective tool of man-killing. And very cheap! Unfortunately, this cannot be said about black powder of XV-century. That's why, when employing lots of mercenaries, prudent commander should pay attention to old trusty crossbows.
Also, can we seriously speak about a condottiere without some heavy-armored cavalrymen at his side? As far as our master's Grimani house is not that wealthy to have their own men-at-arms, they make short-term contract with house Vernier and their clients, who can afford some hitting power.
Stay tuned...
-
Keep 'em coming. Talk of all the different houses gives it a rather 'Game of Thrones' flavour which is a good thing.
-
Very well painted and put together force.
-
Thise figures are stunning :-* - I also really like your groundwork - recipe?
-
Like you be making allies and foes for these fine mercenaries?
-
Fantastic work, I'm watching this project with interest.
-
Thank you!
Ground recipe as is:
Vallejo textured paste of any color (I use grey, because it was the only one available at our local store at the time) + some roughly cut pieces of vine/champaigne cork for small stones.
Paint it with rich yellow color (Citadel Foundation "Yanden Darksun" for example), stones are painted with any mid-grey color. After it is absolutely dry, wash it with strong brown wash/ink (I use Vallejo "Smokey Ink").
Then subsequently drybrush with Iraqi Sand and Pale Sand. Add some grass/bushes/scrub.
This method is quite quick and requires lesser brushwork than usual.
to commissarmoody:
Yes, I'll make some antagonists/part-time antagonists :D soon.
In fact, now I'm interested in conception of small themed forces, that can be added to each other or be placed against each other if neccessary.

Need some guys who are tough-as-nails, while also being cheap-as-nails? Here they are - hired dalmatian infantry under Zaran knight Onufry Wotanowich. If you wish to assault something, rob something or burn something - they can do it with quality and pleasure (not for free of course).

-
Nice painting. You have given them slightly older armour and equipment which would probably work from a country that would not have been as up to date as the Italian or Western European mercenaries (Swiss/Landsnekts etc).
-
Yes, I tried to give 'em a bit of old-school and eastern look.
-
Splendid work. I like them very much. The scale armour Fireforge sergeants bodies work surprisingly well with the WOTR components to create a more exotic looking faction. Nice kitbashing :)
-
Not a bad idea. I like em.
-
Many thanks!!!
Now, we have some cruel and vicious raubritters, bandits and robbers of noble origin, who constantly roam roads, villages and even small towns of Upper and Lower Silesia, sowing crime, fear and destruction.
Here comes Armin Rotenberg from castle Rotenberg, infamous leader of one of these powerful gangs. His enameled red armor makes him a notable figure on a battlefield. He is accompanied by his chief jaeger and scout Udo, suspicious old drunkard and rapist, who is also very able with crossbow and hunting spear. Trusted hound Plato is also present.

Regular Armin's companion in all those raids and robberies - his younger brother Bruno Rotenberg, great enthusiast of pinning someone with ahlspiess, together with his son - Bruno Rotenberg Jr. Youngster is not as vicious as his ancestors, but nonetheless, enjoys running down panicking victims or striking them precisely with a falchion/javelin. He's a sportive guy.

Nice painting on that armour.
-
Very nice builds / conversions. 8) :-*
-
A lovely group of blackhearts and Ne'er-do-well's.
-
I love the painting. Any tips for someone trying to experiment with a similar style? Do you just work up from a black undercoat or block in colours first and wash then paint up? Any tips on colour choices for base vs highlight colours?
-
And now for something completely different (c)

Inspirational: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaRNvJLKP1E
to Goliad:
Color of undercoat depends of the model's "main" color. I prefer black for heavily armored guys and black horses, grey for miniatures dressed in undyed linens, and red-brown undercoat for everything else.
Also I don't usually use washes, except on brown/grey color after undercoating to provide some additional depth. Ah, I wash armor sometimes, if it looks too glossy.

Now, humble and honest servants of Rottenberg family. Seems, they're hunting... Robbery? What robbery are you speaking about? ::)

More great characters. Well done.
I am also (slightly sad, I know), having great fun spotting which plastic sets all the parts come from :D
Very original creations 8)
-
Glad to read that! ))
As far as we are living in the age of plastic wargaming (which was unimaginable just 10 years ago), I think, we must use opportunities it gives us! :)
-
Lovely painting - I always appreciate it when a clean painting style still manages to convey a subject's grubbiness.
-
Great painting.
-
Extremely characterful stuff. Well done! :-*
I really like the background you're doing and the painting too.
Keep them coming!
PS If I have to restart my medieval force because you're stuff is very inspiting I'll blame you! lol
-
very nice indeed :-* :-*
-
Thank you! :)
Here comes old silesian noble Jerzy von Baturinen. Once powerful and influential statesman, he reclessly (thanks to his wife's advices) made enemies with Bishop Konrad and other silesian authorities. As a result, he quickly fell into disfavor with Holy Roman Emperor himself, lost all his privileges and went into exile to Baturinen's ancestral village of Luzjki, spending all free time with his beloved apiary.

I love all of these miniatures. Simply all of them. Great work!

Winter was busy for me - painted indian Malleson force for comission. Now it's almost finished, so we can continue with our medieval folk!
Heart of the land - mere peasants. Armed, but humble, so not that dangerous as it seems.

very nice conversions

:o glad to see more of your work. And looking forward to seeing more. Are you planning on makeing dismounted versions of your bandit knights?

Brilliant conversions :-*
I really like your creativity from so many different components.

Great conversions!
That painting style of yours may seems a little weird at a close up photograph, but works very well on the game table. CONGRATULATIONS! ;)

You can never be a cool guy without a cool car! And if the nearest car-like thing isn't going to be invented in some 300-400 years, you should take a cool cart instead!

Fantastic thread, please keep it up

Thank you, gentlemen!
So, another update, I think you will enjoy it. More medieval personalities right from my bitsbox!

They look bril. Love the old servant.

So much character in these figures, the old servant is fantastic you can almost hear him grumbling behind her back!
-
Great figures with equally great backgrounds.
-
Many thanks to all!
Yes, when I saw that head on the frostgrave sprue, the first thing I imagined was a grumbling old fart with some uneasy past :D
-
really like your painting style. Very illustrator-y, and all the more effective from 'playing' distance I would imagine.
-
Some great figures here :)

Thank you!!

Silesian merchant Helmut Wurstbrandt rides a caravan to the Wrocław's anual festival. He decided to take short (but dangerous) way and, while recovering one of his carts from mud, was ambushed by some notorious raubritter. The only possible help can arrive from the local apiary, where local noble Erzy Baturinen occasionally inspects his domain.

Caravaneers - mostly unarmed monks and wandering musicians are utterly despaired by the sighting of advancing brigands. Only hospitaller knight and his armiger keeps calm.
Raubritters expect little resistance as they have better numbers, skill and armor.

Erzy Baturinen arms his serfs and spurs forward to aid the caravan. Bees start to worry.
Though he quickly finds out, that his rescue mission may become a deathtrap. Armin Rottenberg himself with all his mounted retinue and a little bit crazy noble maiden Zelda decides to give reckless beekeeper a lesson...
First charge leaves virtually no one standing. Old Erzy proudly defends himself nonetheless. Bees become angry.
On the other flank armiger is shot down by the hail of bolts.
Angry monks launch a sudden counter-attack on the lonely raubritter (Armin's nephew) and use their numbers to knock him down.
Things get serious: main raubritter forces engage caravan guards - remaining monks flee in terror. Slaughter at the apiary is finished - Erzy flees for his life, serfs are cut down to a man, but one of them occasionally kills a mount under raubritter commander, and as a result dreadful Armin Rottenberg is buried under his armoured horse, heavily wounded! Also, one of the mounted brigands is terribly bitten by the bees and leaves the area for good.
The turning point of the battle - merchant Wurstbrandt uses all his leadership and orders unarmed musicians to engage the flank of the brigands forces! Now under the leadership of Armin's brother, brigands overestimated the menace and start to flee the battlefield, being mercilessly cut down by angered hospitaller and remaining guards.
Mounted retinue and crossbowmen were too far to help their comrades and the raubritter's center was entirely broken in a blink of an eye. Rottenberg's brother and crazy maiden Zelda tried to stop the flight, but both were wounded in process by encouraged defenders and their attempt failed.
Caravan was saved, and as the numbers of caravaneers greatly reduced, cunning Wurstbrandt was glad that he should pay his escort less money when they'll reach Wrocław...
-
Nice report! What rule did you use?
-
Our own set, hastily designed for large skirmishes. It will be upgraded and rewritten in some way or another, certainly.
-
This was delightful ! The bee emoticons were a laugh !

Angry peasants with agricultural tools cause their mounted and armored lords to laugh at best.
Although, when said peasants, get some crossbows, those lords begin to worry......

"Milord, the peasants are revolting !"
"Yes; have you seen them eat ? !"

Nice additions!
Reminds me on a saying regarding the Battle of Worringen:
"Wahr di Herr, de Bur de kütt!" - roughly translates to: "Beware, Lords, the peasants are coming!"

I've just caught up with this thread - simply superb! Very clever kitbashes, with so much character. The setting is really interesting too: almost makes me want to bin my WotR project and have a go at the Continent!

Oh my, a year has passed since last updates... :o
...
Nonetheless, medieval Silesia lives, with all its glory, misery and bloodshed!
Here are honest silesian burghers. Well, maybe not that honest, but certainly well-armed and determined.

Fab! Great kitbashing

Worth the wait.

This is great , I love your characterisations in an area of europe that most of us don't know.

Thanks a lot, gentlemen!
In fact, I also had no idea about silesian history at all, especially about misfortunate events of the 1430-1450s.
Though, some years ago I re-read Sapkowsky's (creator of "The Witcher") trilogy about Hussite Wars - most of its events take place in Silesia. Suddenly I found myself intrigued and interested by the area and period)))

A great project, brilliant in all aspects and educational to boot :)

The Silesian burghers are a wonderful collection of rascals.

Loving stuff!
