Title: My "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" Cavalry
Post by: Jacksarge on October 06, 2016, 06:14:18 AM

I have been very slow to take pictures of my Anglo-Saxon project, I'm usually taking pictures of commissions as my priority. I have painted quite a number of figures for this project over the last couple of years - very slow progress though. These pictures are of figures that I completed in the last month or so. I have used an unconverted GW metal Eowyn miniature - with feet pinned into a piece of rock (bark), and a Saxon Miniatures figure with a Little Big Men Studios banner & shield decal for the command base. The other figure is a converted metal GW Rohan Royal Guard miniature, which has had a new shield (LBMS decal), a redesigned helmet, a shortened cloak & hauberk, cloth bindings sculpted onto lower legs, and hair sculpted out the back of the helmet. I'm pleased with how they all turned out, and really took my time to get a colour scheme & details that I was happy with.

Brilliant indeed. I've always thought using a rohan royal guardsman and sculpt a wolf head instead of a horse head to make a Uthred. I always thought Rohan minis are quite compatible for such crossover exercise

Stunning brushwork!
That is the best rendition of Eowyn that I think I have seen.

Good to know about those shield transfers too.

Those look great! And the saxon miniatures anglo-saxon really fit scale-wise with the Lotr-minis. Which is giving me some ideas for a more dark age looking lotr project :)

I have decided to consolidate my Anglo Saxons into one post, as I appear to have created a superfluity of Dark Age posts over the last few months. I know how I appreciate following the projects of others contained in a single thread - there are some brilliant examples on LAF. Please accept my apologies for the repetition of pictures seen in other posts, but as I said, I want to gather them into one place.
All the best,
John.  :)

Thanks everyone!
I have bunch more photos to take of what I've already painted, so hopefully more posts on the way.
I just added to them by finishing off a unit of six Anglo-Saxon cavalry from Blacktree designs today.  :)

Once I have photographed the various units and individual items it would be great to get some sort of group shot. I've been thinking I could do with painting up some sort of sky background that I could use for photos on our gaming table.

Another batch of warriors emerge from from the mists of time.....
These are all 28mm metal figures from Gripping Beast, apart from the be-cloaked leader which might be an old Wargames Foundry figure - but I can't find it on their site, let me know if you can identify it. I think I have given him a Wargames Foundry shield from the spares, but I'm not sure who made the original as I picked it up in a trade years ago. Again the shields are a combination of freehand and LBMS decals.

Great collection, painting, and conversions!

I also intend to dig out that Eowyn mini from the Lead Alps for some SAGA (and other) purposes, as soon as I get my act together and those Royal Guards painted up as Hearthguard, so I am very pleased to see it used in a similar way!

Like the Royal Guard figure, I have shortened the cloak on these & added shields with suitable equine designs.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Elite Anglo-Saxon warriors, thegns & hearthguard, musician & standard bearer. Miniatures from Eureka Miniatures Beowulf range, Blacktree Designs, & Gripping Beast.
I really like the Beowulf range from Eureka, great fun to paint & full of character - those full faced helms are very menacing I reckon. Shields designs are a combination of freehand and decals.

More Anglo-Saxon warriors. These fellows are of mixed status, some are armed with swords & two wear helms - I'm sure items like that would have been handed down & well looked after, perhaps looted from foes.
These are all 28mm metal miniatures from Gripping Beast. The shields are a mix of freehand and LBMS decals.

Great painting. How do you get your clothing colours to be "washed out/faded" like that? It is a great colour scheme but one I can never manage as my figures always turn out too bright for how I like them.

I try and use colours that are not too bright to start with, and often fade them out with a neutral colour like Vallejo Deck Tan or a light flesh tone - pure white is way too bright for this purpose. I also paint over a neutral undercoat of grey. The paints that I found work best for me for the Dark Age stuff are Vallejo Model Colour range & Reaper Paints - some other brands of paint are just too intense for the purpose. Some of the best Dark Age palette colours can be found in the WW2 paints that Vallejo produces. I hope that helps, and of course it is just one person's way of doing things :-)

I really like the sculpts by Colin Patten from Saxon Miniatures, they are great fun to paint - Colin knows his stuff. The shield in the centre - large stylised horse's head - is freehand, & based on a Rohan shield design I had seen in the MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online. Might have to paint some more like that :-)

Brilliant addition to the array of expertly painted miniatures in this thread. :) Love the colours and shield designs.
You're absolutely right, Collin Patten is a true master of his trade - if perhaps underrated for his subdued, 'realistic' style. Good to see those minis here.

Very nice color palette! To be honest I think that to choose the right color palette is one the most difficult decisions to take when painting Ancients/Medievals. Actually, any army without uniforms! You got it perfectly, with a nice mix of bright and faded colors, depending on the character being represented by the miniature. Really impresed.

By the way, thanks for bring to our attention Patten's miniatures. I, for one, didn't know about them!

Title: Re: My "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" UPDATE 6th JULY 2017 Converting Thor!
Post by: Jacksarge on July 06, 2017, 09:11:42 AM
A while back I received a couple of free miniatures with the "Painting War Dark Ages Special" book, one of which was a miniature that appeared to represent Thor. I thought that miniature was too much into the "realms of fantasy" for my Dark Ages collection, so I set about converting it.

In the first picture (below), you can see another person's painted version of the original figure inset to the left. To the right is my completed conversion.

So, here's what did I to the original:

As there is no integral base with this figure, I first drilled & pinned it to a mdf base.
Removed metal plates from chest.
Hand & Hammer were a separate piece, so I had to carefully cut away hammer from hand & drill hand out so as to fit spear.
Left arm was bent around to take a shield.
Thin layers of green-stuff were sculpted to create trousers and tunic to go under the mail shirt.
Extra green-stuff was added to the beard to bulk it out a bit - hey if he's going for the "hairy barbarian" look, may as well give more facial hair :-)
Mail shirt was sculpted on - my first go at sculpting a full mail shirt - being careful to leave the belt exposed.
Added a green-stuff pouch to the belt.
Did a press-mould of a very simple sword, to which I then added straps with thin pieces of masking tape, plus extra decoration with green-stuff to give the impression of knot-work.
Stuck shield to left arm
Painted the miniature & did the basing.

Title: Re: My "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" UPDATE Hama & Gamling Join the Anglo-Saxons
Post by: Jacksarge on July 13, 2017, 08:08:40 AM
I managed to pick up a Hama & Gamling from the GW Lord of the Rings range of miniatures via eBay. They were relatively inexpensive as they are among the more common sculpts, some of the rarer figures really are rather expensive. I thought these figures would be ideal to convert for my Anglo-Saxon collection.

It was easy enough to bend the left arms and give them shields , (I picked up a pack of spare shields from Gripping Beast a while back) - they even received suitably equine decals from Little Big Men Studios.
I left the armour on the arms, painting it as leather, it would have been too much hassle to file it away & re-sculpt. I did however shorten the length of the hauberk & simplified the legs & boots - a combination of cutting, filing & green-stuff.

As in my previous conversion of a Rohan Royal Guard, I shortened the length of the cloaks. The long cloaks were fine if riding horses only, but not practical for fighting on foot.

The original slotta bases were discarded in favour of 3mm mdf, the feet were drilled and pinned into the base.

These hardy warriors are all from Eureka Miniatures small, but rather splendid, range of 28mm Dark Age figures. I am hoping to fill out the ranks with a few more from them, and even a couple of special "civilian" items. There is an even split between decals & freehand on the shields. Interestingly the figure 2nd from right in first picture was originally armed with the angon, I replaced this with a standard spear. I like the variety of clothing & armour in the figures.

The majority of these are Gripping Beast stalwarts for the shieldwall, with the exception of Harold Horn-Blower. Perhaps a distant ancestor of Horatio, this Horn-Blower is a conversion using a body from Blacktree Designs, a head from Westwind's Dark Age ranges, a fur cape made from greenstuff, and a shield that I believe came from a plastic GW orc. Don't like to waste a figure if I can avoid it :-)
The shields are a mix of decals and freehand.

Thanks guys :-)
A few people have asked for group shots, I am working on it, but not sure I can get everything in shot....170 plus minis
However,
Some "proof of concept" pictures of Dark Age terrain stuff. Trying to see if I can take pictures of a bunch of my Dark Age minis in this setting. Not going to be able to fit many in the shot, need to find ways to widen the view without it looking crappy.
Church building is resin from Gripping Beast, cross & cart are from Warbases, rest is scratch-built:

Warriors and Monks in the Village.
The Warriors are 28mm metals from Gripping Beast, Eureka, Footsore, and Saxon Miniatures - all seem to mix in well. Banner & shield decals from LBMS.
Monks & cattle are also from Gripping Beast.

Ragnar Lothbrok (or Lodbrok), a heroic 28mm miniature from Gripping Beast. I painted this more as a display figure in my collection, but who knows, he might see some action. A really nice miniature to paint. The base is 3mm mdf.

28mm Javelin armed skirmishers for my Anglo-Saxons. They were originally in the Gripping Beast slingers pack, but the miniatures are really dual purpose. I cut down some spare spears to be more suitable as javelins.

Some civilians - 28mm metal miniatures from Black Tree Designs. There are three local farmer types, and one who could work as a merchant with sack over his shoulder & a pouch for his coin. I have used a quite subdued palette for these characters, as they are essentially wearing their working clothes.

May I ask, the last backdrop is handmade? A waterpaint?

Post by: Jacksarge on December 03, 2017, 12:44:30 AM
Next up are a couple of Gripping Beast miniatures that I originally painted up several years back as part of my "Arthurian" collection. I have since parted with most of my figures for this era, and wanted to see if I could re-purpose these for slightly later centuries. I stripped off my original paintwork then cut, filed & carved off the cast on oval shaped shields that they carried. The figures were then given round shields & repainted. I painted freehand designs on both shields, taking inspiration from Rohan designs - as seen in the movies. I think they can now pass as either Middle Anglo-Saxons or warriors from one of the Welsh Kingdoms.

Here are a couple of casualty figures I painted up - the kneeling figure is from Gripping Beast, I think the other is from BTD. Have been slowly building up a few casualty figures for my collection - ideally it would be great to replace every fallen warrior with something like this in a game.

These three stalwart fellows are from Eureka Miniatures small but splendid Dark Ages range. I did some slight conversion work on the figure with the green shield (left). He was sold as a Visigoth and had a rather pointed helm, I wanted a more generic look & so filed down the helm & added some reinforcing bars with greenstuff. The shield decals are Celtic designs from LBMS.

First up is an Anglo Saxon standard bearer from Gripping Beast - lots of pictures of this from different angles :-) The banner is from Little Big Man Studios, the shield design is freehand.

Secondly, a casualty base converted from a Blacktree Designs Viking raider type - he has been given a greenstuff beard, chopped off his base, and skewered with a brass rod spear.

Thirdly is a pony from Gripping Beast, useful as either set dressing or part of a scenario.

Title: Re: My "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" Cavalry!
Post by: Jacksarge on April 29, 2018, 05:16:01 AM
There is some debate as to whether Anglo-Saxons operated as cavalry in battles, certainly the larger melees which have survived in manuscript accounts have little to say about mounted actions on the battlefield. My understanding is that we can be quite sure that they operated as mounted infantry at the very least, using horses to get to the battle or to get to a potential conflict "the fastest with the mostest". They were no strangers to riding to hunt or as a means of transport & the horse was a respected creature, appearing frequently in Anglo-Saxon burials/cremations of earlier centuries.

I decided that I would like the possibility of fielding some Anglo-Saxon cavalry, even if only a couple of units. I finished my first group of six a while back but hadn't shared the pictures. I have some more unpainted cavalry in the "to do" box.

The miniatures are from Blacktree Designs 28mm Anglo-Saxon range.

Nice! Did you use oils and a wipe on the horses?

Very welcome! :D. The horses look great! They have very much the same effect I get with oils.

having looked the thread again - it would be nice to see an ensemble pic  :)

I have been asked about that before, but I'm really not sure how I could do that, they wouldn't all fit in picture. If I did manage it, the figures would be so far away that you wouldn't see much.
I'm open to suggestions - how do other folks take pictures of large groups of figures?

This thread has some very nice painting - and a lot of useful info on minis, both for Dark Age, and fantasy (Middle-Earth) - as many of those Saxons could easily be included in a Rohan army!
