Title: Pirates!- (campaign available- page 9)
Post by: matakishi on November 05, 2016, 12:30:17 PM
I'm going to be running a Pirates RPG for my Saturday group in the new year so it's time to get some miniatures painted and some scenery made.
I've started with some indigenous cannibals. Actual Carib Indians are far too boring so I've used some Northstar African cannibals with face masks.

The huts are from Hovels, the stockade I made, I made the fire pit although the cauldron is from Black Cat Bases (back in business I'm pleased to say). The canoes are from Frontline Wargaming.

I shall be followig this with interest.  My pirates haven't seen the light of day for a while and this may spur me to game with them again. Keen to see how the Savage Worlds rules work.

Actually these look far better than the masked warriors, IMHO:

I use them as one of the tribes of the Amazon Women of the Dark Side of the Moon in my Dreamlands RPG.  ;)

Actually, the purchase was triggered by a game of Congo at this year's Horisont convention last weekend. But, as I never buy anything that cannot be multi-purposed, they should feature in other games as well (I'll try to shoe-horn them into my both IHMN and OGAM projects, and should I get some pirate gaming up and running, they are an obvious choice for some islander cannibals or guardians of some ancient jungle temple).

Now, back on topic!

Argonor, I am planning to use them as temple guardians in a remake of the classical RIGG'S SHRINE scenario. But with Pirates. In the Dark Side of the Moon.  ;)

This is all for an RPG I will be running. I'll be using the Savage Worlds rules as that's what my group is familiar with.
I am writing all the adventures myself which I will put up somewhere, maybe here at first, for those that want to use them.
Unfortunately my current health problems mean I can't sit at my desks to paint or build so everything apart from the scenario writing, map drawing, player hand out designing and NPC card making is on hold.
When I can get back to producing things more suited to this forum I will be working on a small set of Chinese pirates. I have no idea when this will be though, probably not until next year.

As an example of what I can manage to do at the moment here is the island the players will begin on, waking up on the beach after their ship is wrecked.

My original design sketch quickly drawn in Bamboo Paper on the iPad:

The Players' map which they can draw on. The basic sketch worked up in Sketchbook Pro on the iPad:

OK. Back to this.
The Pirates themselves are being painted and I've written everything I'm going to until play gets underway and I know which of the plots the players are going to follow.
I'm back to painting my contribution to this, the Chinese are being done, boats have been 3D printed and are being assembled and I finished this MDF coach from TT Combat. Horses are from Warbases.

Argonor, that's one of the setbacks on being a visionary! ;)

I don't think I'm particularly visionary, but I have seen the raise of computers from wall-sized pocket calculators over personal computers to hand-held devices, and the Development from needle printers to affordable color laser printers, with prices plummeting while the tech-level sky-rocketed.

Technical development is basically exponential, with the time from invention to general adaption by the market getting shorter and shorter for each new gadget, so it was not that hard to predict.

3D printed boats.

No miniatures for scale, sorry. The large boat's over 20cm long. I added some PVC tube so I could attach magnets for removable masts.
The sails are also printed which is a godsend for me, I hate making and attaching paper or cloth sails.

Edit: Found a picture with a miniature.

Very nice, Paul.

Would I be right to assume, that, over time, even factoring in the cost of the 3D printer plus the material for 3D printing, it works out cheaper than resin buildings?

I guess you'd have to print a lot of scenery though, to recoup the cost of the hardware?

Or is it just that there's more choice of 3D printable buildings?

Thanks  :)

The cost per item in materials is minimal, really minimal, pennies.
The cost of the machine is not much, about the same as a console and a game (maybe 2 games).
I get great enjoyment from watching it produce stuff. I also like shopping for free stuff to download and print, it costs nothing and it scratches that retail therapy itch (a bit like browsing for free apps). I've bought far fewer miniatures this year because of this, almost none in fact.

I've had my new machine for 4 days and I've printed (once the current job is done) 36 items. In a couple of months I'll have printed, what? 400 items? (easily, it's addictive) Costing them out to accommodate the £400 the machine cost makes them each £1.00 more expensive. That means that large boat and its sail costs £1.70 instead of £0.70 in materials.
How much is a resin boat? More than £0.70 certainly. After that two months is up the printer's paid for itself and we're back to pennies again.

It's not the be-all and end-all. There are lines on the prints and you have to pick what will work (wood texture hides the lines well) and what won't (smooth vehicles don't look good) but that's the way of things.

In case you missed it I have a thread here on my 3D sculpts
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=98364.0

And a couple of pages on my website detailing how I've got on with my printer and what's what:
http://www.matakishi.net/3d-printing-things.html

Hopefully they'll answer some questions
I'll be adding my thoughts on my new printer once I get some time.

I am thinking of buying one; they look too handy. Unfortunately I have no idea what I should be looking for.

The Prusa/Wanhao/Maker printer (it's branded as many different things) is a very good starting printer for around £300.
It is the most supported on Thingiverse (where the free files come from) and there are endless Youtube videos and articles by its users to advise and troubleshoot.

I got mine from here (so you can see what it looks like):
https://www.technologyoutlet.co.uk/products/3d-printer-wanhao-duplicator-i3

My current printer is this one:
https://www.technologyoutlet.co.uk/products/omega-i3-3d-printer

Which costs £400 but has several improvements over the Wanhao i3.

The one I want to end up with costs £2000
That'll be some time in the future though ;)

I like the models but I had a hell of a time getting my paint to stick.

I've painted a couple of their smaller boats without problem, gave them a quick rinse in soapy water and after they'd dried I sprayed them with Halford's Etch primer.

Maybe a dodgy batch of resin?

I rinsed and scrubbed and then sprayed them. I don't normally spray stuff, I do it by hand but my paint was beading so I sprayed. The spray peeled off as well but stuck after a few coats and then a brush prime on top.
Nice boats though :)

I had trouble finding photos of the ships full stop. I'd have liked a few pictures showing the masts.
Anyway, they're done now and it'll be a long time before I paint any more (I hope). I have some scenery and civilians to paint before play resumes in 2 weeks.

I emailed him in the end for more photos, especially to do the rigging. The GoW guy, who's name eludes me, has also rigged one of his longboats - it's sweet as and his work closes the gap between gaming piece and ship modelling.

I did too, he said he didn't have any but would let me know when he had made some. Which is fair enough but didn't fit in with my build schedule :)
I just guessed in the end, it's not like I really care and I decided not to add rigging after all so I can take the masts down for storage. These are tall buggers when they're assembled.

And some really old 3D printed floating barrels that I did with my first printer (so they're a bit rough). I found them in a box and decided to paint them up anyway.

These have all been photographed on my new terrain cloths from Deep Cut Studio. Because they're just cloth you can see the weave but they're really quick to swap out for role-playing games where locations change frequently and I can fold them down to cover smaller areas (they're 3ft x 3ft). Very useful.

Hi Paul, I've just read through all 7 episodes of your pirate adventures and thoroughly enjoyed them.
I'm curious as to how you drive the storyline.  From your initial intro it sounded as if all the players were involved and you didn't have a G.M. I  can see how you could pre-construct a scenario but you seem to have lots of sub plots that are depending on other things happening, hence  the curiosity.
Anyway an all together marvellous project and that Celina is an amazing woman,  she's  worth all of the rest of the party put together, would your daughter be playing her?
Cheers

Hi John, The game is a standard tabletop RPG in style, I'm the GM and I've written the plots. The players collect rumours by talking to locals and can choose to act on them or not as they see fit. Their actions then generate reactions from the many factions and interested parties that inhabit the local area so everything is based on plots and characters rather than set adventures.

The luck of the dice during character creation meant that most of the fighting men in the party were a bit rubbish and it's taking some time for their skills to improve. Consequently, Celina (played by my daughter) is in the thick of the action as the party has to try and sneak around problems rather than attacking them head on and Celina is the only character who can sneak around with any certainty so she ends up leading the way or going it alone whilst the rest of the party look on willing her to succeed. They're getting better though. Panama Red's seamanship skills have allowed them to take on and capture ships that outgunned them substantially and Honest jake is raking in  money for them left and right. It's just the fighting they're a bit poor at.

Celina Merice. Panama Red. Captain Reginald Goodwood. Planchet. Lefty Hamish McTavish. Honest Jake Fluke. Professor Julius Arbuthnott. 'Colonel' Courtney Rice.
The crew: Wu Ma, cook's assistant. Bartholomew Stew, cook. John Oxenham, ship's carpenter. Nermal, ship's cat. JEREMY, a goat.

I have time to read all your Pirate Gaming AAR on your site. Some great reading, I'm guessing you are using "The High Seas Hack" on your site. I've been looking for a set of RPG rules for Pirate Gaming how well would this rules work in 15mm scale?
Title: Re: Pirates!- (new civilians page 7)

Thanks for the info, the stories did read Iike a GM organised game, I play most of my games solo and so I'm always looking for plot devices that will drive my games in unexpected ways.
Your games appeared much more free form than anything I have come up with for a solo game. I obviously need to find a GM.

Honest Jake seems like a useful character to have in a group, finance is presumably covered in your rules.
Good luck to Celina.

They're old school role-playing rules so they work with any miniatures or no miniatures depending on your play style. They're not skirmish rules so any distances are given in real world measurements (there are only three actual distances listed in the rules- close, near, far away) and you can decide yourself how these are to be represented on your tabletop if you're using miniatures.

Money is only covered in the loosest way and is measured in 'gold' (you could use 'doubloons' if you prefer) Since Jake is a merchant he always discovers twice as much gold as anyone else, he rolls 2 dice instead of one when searching for loot.

You will need a GM to play the High Seas Hack (as with most RPGs) to have the most fun with it. Personally, I have the most fun being the GM, others have different preferences of course :) A GM in the High Seas Hack doesn't roll any dice (except damage dealt) so you can have a relaxing time just watching the players mess things up.
I will be publishing my adventures so others can play them but not for some time so as to avoid spoilers for my players.

Celina doesn't really need luck but she could do with some more competent companions :) I'll pass on your good wishes.

Sounds Great, Thanks for responding so quickly.

Vagabond, you could make a 4 sets of cards, plot driven cards, theft , robbery, kidnapping and more, then have a set of NPC cards as to who in involved, plus a set of rumor cards talking about treasures, places, ships, other pirates, then cards for objects involved. then you can just draw 4 cards and make your story from there. sometimes you may have to draw extra cards so the story flows better.

I solo game myself and it works for me just take time to make all the cards you feel you might need. then you find that you might need to make a few more.

War Monkey - thanks for your thoughts, I understand how you do this and agree it's a good start to create a story/plot line but it's the cards that Paul is using that move the story in a certain direction. So for example one of them was "someone is living in the old fort" his players can go there or not, they will find something that Paul knows but they don't, this might help them or not. It is a typical D and D style GM directed game.
I tend to have a story line and then use encounter markers on the table, these might be things that help or not but they are relatively limited in their direction of the story on the broader scale. I recently posted a game on the Gothic Horror board that illustrates what I mean.
I'm intending to try some form of Pulp Noir Detective games, and I've bought the game Sherlock Homes to provide the clues and ultimate answer to the crime, but I will game it with miniatures and a sort of Pulp Alley style rule system. The Sherlock Homes game will be my GM and I will play the fighting, running, shooting etc as a solo game.

Paul sorry to go off post, one final question I can't figure out how to follow your posts on your site, I started my own blog this year so blogger could notify me of other people's posts but I don't seem to be able to do that with your site!
Any advice.

John,
My site isn't a blog, it doesn't use blog software so there's no unifying newsfeed you can subscribe to. I tend to update on Sundays, the front page shows all the new stuff by date so, if you check in each Sunday, you can see if there's anything new you'd be interested in. That's the best I can do, sorry :)
I also post updates to G+ and Facebook which you can get notifications for if you're that way inclined.

Nice report.

Do the rules you have there, have a section for handing out a rumor card, or do you have a your own system and I'm going to guess for each of the rumor cards you have, you already have the story line for it written up just waiting for the players to go off in another direction.

I could make some "Red Herring" cards or "Wild Goose Chase" cards for side lining dead ends.

The rules cover collecting rumours. How you get the rumours to your players is up to you. I like handing out the cards to the players because when their characters reconvene they can all compare notes and it's new to everyone. Nobody's had to sit there while I read stuff to other players.

Red Herrings are up to you but collecting rumours is a skill in the rules so players get useful information as a result of a success. Succeeding in an information gathering skill and getting no information is not a success.

All the plots are written beforehand. Location, NPCs, quick story overview- it's very fast to prepare. My players have now left Montserrat having only explored about a third of the possible stories there. Some will still be there if they return, some won't. When they get to Mexico there are another two pages of new rumours for them to start collecting.

I thought that might be the case, I don't do Facebook, just have to resort to a failing memory. :'(
Cheers

I post here when the pirates are updated, you'll get notifications of that :)

Thanks for the information, gives me something more to work on.

Montserrat continues on the starting adventures provided in Monkey Island, the first adventure module for The High Seas Hack. Montserrat is a sandbox setting that continues stories started in Monkey Island as well as presenting the players with several new adventure opportunities.

Montserrat's 70 pages contain over 20 adventure-hook rumours to entice the players, illustrated NPCs and 7 mapped and detailed towns along with a map and description of Porto Grande, the pirate stronghold of the dreaded Black Sanchez.

The High Seas Hack is a tabletop roleplaying game set in the golden age of piracy using a variation of The Black Hack rules. You will require a copy of The High Seas Hack to enjoy these adventures fully.
