15mm English Longbows from Khurasan
Those are very amazing. What's your secret for the faces? Really small brushes with accurate points and lots of patience?
They are inspiring for sure!
Thanks

Have you painted the eyes onto 15mm minis??
Stop it this instant! You're making the rest of us look bad!
Seriously, this is incredible work. Really great stuff.

Very nicely painted!

A Viking hero from Foundry. Probably more fantasy than historical :-)
-
A Viking hero from Foundry. Probably more fantasy than historical :-)
Not as much there, a lot of that depends upon what you wanted him doing.
If you're raiding from a ship, well, you probably aren't wearing as much armor and probably less clothing if it's warm enough. Finding a deeper spot and ending up drowned is not something they'd particularly want to have happen...
-
nice
-
A very nice selection of very well painted minis!
I think that latest Foundry Viking could get to play a main part in my Norse OGAM warband (I finally am close to have sufficient minis painted for it).

Such a neat job on 15mm :-*
Sir, you're a real artist!
-
15mm Late Medieval Knights by Essex Miniatures.
-
They've stood the test of time pretty well haven't they?
Great job on the lances Steve. I find the twirly stripes tricky enough to get right in 28mm. God knows how you manage it in 15s.
-
Thanks.
I find things get easier the smaller the figure. :-)
-
They look quite handsome.
-Michael
-
Thanks.
I find things get easier the smaller the figure. :-)
Your work in small scales is great! :-*
Years ago, when they were asking me how I manage with 10mm, I replied:
-Bah, I scarcely work! After midnight, a dozen of dwarves come out and finish the job ;)
-
Some 15/18mm mounted knights from Khurasan.
Thanks for painting them Steve. Those Essex 15th century MAA look great too.

:-* :-* superb painting to highlight the folding of the clothes!!!
-
Outstanding work on these, Steve, very inspirational! :-*
If you don’t mind my asking, what is your process for taking such excellent close-ups of your 15mm figures?
-
Another base for the 15mm Ottoman DBA army. Theses are meant to be Iayalar fanatics, I've no idea what they should look like so I used generic Arab figures (no one will notice :-) ).
-
:-*
-
Very neat painting! They are great!
Some years ago I have seen one picture, but I cannot find it now. They had clean shaven head with their forehead pierced with a piece of metal if I remember well.
The closer figures pic I found is this of the Old Glory miniatures, but they wear turbans.

They look crazy enough to me - very nicely done.

I had painted some of them in the past, but mine have no eyes painted, this is why they dont shoot so well :D

I rebased my 15mm sheep for use in DBx and added a shepherd.

Beautiful work Dean! :-*
Christopher

Beautiful work as always. Good luck on the real life issues whatever they may be.
-
A Viking hero from Foundry. Probably more fantasy than historical :-)
You paint beautifully! We have many of the same Viking minis from Foundry (my favorites), and it’s interesting for me to see how people interpret the models. For example, I made this guy a priest of Thor for my SAGA factions. I agree that the model is rather ahistorical but after a decade painting GW stuff, my style is inextricably linked to cartoonishness so I guess it fits 😂

Wonderful Steve these are some of the best sculpts Essex did. :-*

Great series of minis, and impressive painting for the scale!

Deano,

Yes, from the command pack.

The last of the Ottoman Generals for my 15mm ADLG army. Figures are Essex apart from the General himself, who is by Khurasan.
Just two units of Janissaries to do and they'll be ready to fight. :-)

The Khurasan generals are very characterful sculpts! And your flags are superb!
Eager to see this beautiful army you are preparing in action! ;D
-
Deano,
Are the figures from the 18mm late 14th century range?
The generals from my range are from our late 16th ottoman range. We don’t make late 14th Century ottomans.
Yet. :)

Thumbs up for Khurasan that makes horses with various armor styles and the nights are very well sculpted.
Your paintjob on the shield heraldics is first rate!
-
Thanks for that DintheDin — couldn’t not make that beautiful neo-classical Italian horse armour from Armies of the Middle Ages Vol. 1. The knights in Italian style armour will also be available with more generic armoured horses, both for Italian condottiere and for use as Eastern Europeans. (Italian and German armour styles were used in Hungary, Serbia, etc, but polish styles were pretty much the same as German).
-
Those handgunners are stunning :o :-*

15mm Serbian Bowmen from Essex Miniatures.

Brilliant Steve one of my favourite armies :-*
-
Brilliant work as always Steve.
As an aside. Have you changed your varnish or the red paint you use? I ask because lots of your recent photos show reds (and few other colours) with a distinct sheen. Perhaps it's a trick of the light?
-
Impressive work of brush! Painting eyes that detailed in 15 mm, chapeau bas Monsieur!

My varnish is drying a slight satin now for some reason, but I like it. Some of it would be the bright lights I'm using for the camera work.

this will stop that, so matte it absorbs light.

Thanks for that. I'm using the Vallejo red as a base, then flat red, then dark vermillion, but it doesn't seem as intense. Hmmmm.

15mm Ottoman Delis light cavalry from Essex Miniatures.

Stunning in 15mm. The eyes are great and the leopard skin particularly good. I used these figures in a Wallachian army, and only wish they had come out half as well as yours.

15mm Mongol “Hostage Screen” from Khurasan Miniatures.

15mm? tell me that's not true! :o OK, off to tip out my paints and burn my brushes. In a whole series of excellent paintjobs, that's outstanding even by your own high standards.

15mm Late Medieval French Knights from Khurasan Miniatures.
Stunning work. As always.. unfortunately for us mere mortals we paint whole armies of these. A lower standard otherwise we would manage one army every two years.

Very good sculpts and impressive painting, I'm sure one can see their eyes through the helmet slits :)

So hard to believe these are 15mm, really well done!

Stuning everything, but the shields are something else!
Is 15mm your favorite scale?
-
I promised a group pic of my 15mm ADLG Ottoman Empire Army a whie back. Well here it is. I've still got to add a few more options - a couple of War Wagons, a couple of heavy spearmen units, another artillery piece and to increase the number of heavy/medum cav by a few units.
-
Spectacular :-*
I have an army with similar figures, but not of such beauty!
-
Lovely. I used to have Ottomans, (mainly old Mikes Models 15mm), so I have a soft spot for them as an army. Currently I have the lead (Venexia) to do them again for DBMM, but so far I have only done a DBA army's worth.
Those are both inspirational and a little bit depressing! :D
-
Oh man - it's just a thumbnail, but that is one gorgeous looking army.

Gorgeous! Perfect Fleur-de-Lys!!!

Wow - I would be proud if I could get those results in 28mm - in 15mm that is simply incredible :o
Well done :-* :-* :-*
-
Not half bad at all.
For the figures, the chap on the right looks like he may have eaten a few prisoners, and the Khurusan horses are improving.
I do really like the tonal variation and colour selection - especially on the smaller elements.
-
15mm Ottoman Azab Javelinmen from Khurasan Miniatures.

15mm Tupi from Khurasan Miniatures

I think Khurasan Miniatures are on a par with Xyston in terms of the sculpts, perhaps cleaner.
Just out of interest, how do they compare size wise with one another?

A word of warning, the Khurusan ranges are sculpted by a variety of contract sculptors and can be highly inconsistent in style and size between ranges.

Can't see the pack he was from, maybe they're out of stock?
-
The chap with the 2 handed sword in post 342 is from pack 57 (at least that's what is written on the one in my unpainted lead mountain) but it doesn't appear on the website. Suspect they're put of stock as Steve suggested.
These are absolutely stunning paint-jobs Steve on the loveliest medieval figures on the market IMO. Thank you for sharing :-*

gosh, 'mikes models' ... blimey.

Tons of character. I did an Ottoman army with Mikes Models and they were actually nice figures. Huge turbans and by tat stage they were using Essex horses I think, which were actually quite nice.

Lovely paint.
Indeed. Lovely painting, and for 15mm, lovely figures.
You and me both with the Mike’s Models Ottomans.
I remember getting the train down to Brighton and visiting his (short-lived) shop to buy a load of his new Ottoman Turks to supplement my 15mm Minifigs Turks. The figures seemed incredibly detailed at the time by comparison. Although they were proper chunky little munchkins if I think about them now. Cute though lol
But at the time, they were as revelatory in 15mm as Essex Miniatures were in 25mm - showing that wargames figures could ooze character and detail. Well, caricature perhaps... :)
I sold them on about 30 years ago :)
-

that's right - the shop in Brighton*! There's where my brother got them - 'it's all coming back to me now ...' ;D
they were certainly a revelation after Peter Laing figures - lovely tho' those were in their own way.

I was living in Oz at the time, and had started playing Tercio with a Polish mate, I travelled back to the UK for my sister's wedding, visited an old friend who had just started playing DBM at the Perth club, and ordered Essex Carthaginians and Ottomans, had them sent to my parents, and took them back with me to Oz.

Great looking figures! The painting is superb!
I noticed that you drill a the Essex lances out for the Knights and for the standard bearers. I've attempted this before, with my little hand drill, but had no luck. Can I ask what drill set up you use to achieve it?
Thanks!

These are such great pieces :o
How you put the faces on the 15mm figures is very artful, as I often find that on the bare metal sculpts there isn’t always a clear face to be seen, unlike on 28mm models where details like lips, brow, nose, cheek and jaw lines etc are ‘ready-made’ for you. It means that you have actually put the face on there, or ‘found’ it in the sculpt, which is very impressive!
-
they are indeed absolute little marvels
-
These make me both very happy and very sad.
Happy, because they look great, really brilliantly pained and excellent models.
Sad, because your 15mm painting is better than my 28mm painting.

I had a quick bash at painting some 15mm stuff over the weekend and they were very unsatisfactory and that's being kind! I'll give them another go at some point soon and see if I can amend the end result. Perhaps by using larger 'gaps' in the layering.

I have a question, Deano. Do you spend long cleaning up your models before you start?
I only ask, as I have some Khurasan models, and they are very nice, but there are bits of wonky detail, or slightly unclear bits in the sculpts, which make it hard to make them look 'perfect', but you seem to manage to make them look impeccable.
Is it all in the paint job, or is there more prep involved too?
-
My prep is the normal flash and mould line removal and snipping of the 'worm' bits - other than that I guess it's the paint job?
I do find details on figures are a lot clearer when they've been undercoated.
-
Well your paint job does an excellent job of bringing out the best in the models.
I think perhaps my method (pretty rough and table-top standard) is more reliant on washes, and washes will pick out imperfections, whereas a more precise method can 'correct' them.
Keep up the great work, I always like seeing the models on this thread.

Random question.. do we know ifvRomans marched in step?
-
Yes they did. The miles are Roman miles (0.92 miles or 1.481 km)
At the beginning of their training recruits must be taught the marching step. They will only learn to march
quickly and in time if they practise continuously. And so they must complete a march of 20 miles in
5 hours at normal marching speed. When they march at a faster speed they must complete a distance of 24
miles in the same time.
Vegetius, 1.9

Not really what I asked. This talks about speed, but no indication they marched in step.
-
Not really what I asked. This talks about speed, but no indication they marched in step.
I am sorry you think that. You asked if they marched in step and Vegetius indicates that they did - they marched in the Roman Military Step.
If want a specific answer it does help to be precise. What you asked was vague as it covers some 2000 years of history from the founding of Rome to the fall of Constantinople. Neither did you specify whether you were asking about drill on a parade ground. marching on a route march or tactically in battle. From what you now say I think you actually meant "cadenced step".
There is an astonishing number of books, academic papers in journals, Doctorate theses in University libraries, larger reference libraries and some are available online. Some are free some charge a fee. They cover Roman drill, marching songs, military music, pay, religion, marriage, recruitment, training and almost every aspect of the Roman Army (and navy). I found one on the colour of horses in Roman Britain. In addition the Romans (not all were military men) wrote a lot about military operations though no actual drill manuals have survived they are referred to in many other sources.
A good starting point is "The Complete Roman Army" by Adrian Goldsworthy (one the best authorities on the Roman Army) which has a very useful bibliography.
Happy research! You will find the answer and also gain a great insight into the fascinating Roman military and the many and varied opinions of the academics.
-
I have Goldsworthy, a range of other books on the Roman army, and a huge number of Academia articles downloaded over years.
I simply can't remember any reference to whether Romans marched in step. So I asked for a reference to that. You haven't (so far) given one. I appreciate you saying 'do your own research' - but I thought someone on here might be able to point me to the specific reference. You can't or won't. Cool.
But don't assume I haven't looked, or assume I haven't got a library of well over 1000 books on Ancient Warfare from all sorts of authors.
-
Since you mention him Goldsworthy Page 80 " Basic Training" for a reference. Though no footnote, regrettably.
You might like to ask your question on the "Age of Myths, Gods and Empires" board for a more complete answer.

15mm Medieval Longbowmen from Essex Miniatures

Those are great. I don't know how old these particular sculpts are, but I think Essex still offers some of the nicest 15mm stuff out there. Clean designs that have held up very well over the years.
-
Definitely agree about the Essex figures, the ones I have are quite good. When you add Steve’s phenomenal painting to them the results are beautiful!
-
Amazing painting as ever…
On the Wiglaf, I can’t be the only reader disappointed at the lack of pose variation - they are all legs akimbo and waving their right hand - in the same way… surely that’s a bit 1981… no?
-
That was my view as well, nice sculpts, nice paint but the poses are all a bit 'samey'.

You're really on a roll with those Khazars. If I was still doing 15mm I would be sorely tempted to pick up a load of them.
The only thing I have found with this manufacturer is that the figures are designed by different sculptors so there can be a lot of variation in size, bulk and 'style'. These look to be on the slight build and smaller size.

I bookmarked the Saxons you painted on the Wiglaf website, but I am kicking myself that I forgot about this thread before tackling the Vendel culture warriors. Not that my efforts come even close to these beauties, but I have found your crisp, detailed painting a massive help when working out how to approach these minis. Plus, I enjoy the eye-candy.

What paint colour, preferably vallejo or army painter, do you use to get that colour of horse? I can never seem to find the right colour for that effect.

To me it looks similar to a shaded Coat d'arms Chestnut colour.
-
Simply superb Steve :-* :-* :-*
-
ok on the paint yes chestnut but just wondered if anyone could advise if that colour can be obtained in the vallejo or army painter range? I can then check if I have a similar colour in my collection.

Impressive array of 15 mm figures on display - and I've only seen a fraction of the full thread.
It will all come in handy as inspiration as I work on my Viking/Robin Hood/Medieval figures - pretty much all sorted now but for maybe a few figures - just need painting.
Heck, even a photo of a full army (dba). Perhaps one of the periods Deano actually plays rather selling on figures?
Excellent work as always.
edit: I've now been through this entire thread - extraordinary. And you'd think it would put to rest any issues with 15 mm, clearly they can be painted to compete with any sized figures - though granted talent like Deano's is few and far between. Now I have to go find the source of those "expendable captives" at Khurasan.
-
15mm Seljuk Turks from Khurasan Miniatures

Such a fantastic range. Smart of them to get an equally fantastic painter to paint it.
