Title: 1/72 Greek fantasy figures finished
Post by: Gunner Dunbar on January 06, 2017, 04:31:37 AM
Hi guys

Firstly these will be converted, repainted and based, please read on.

So I succumbed to the long fought off temptation to start a 1/72 Fantasy project, I need another project like a hole in the head (I have 28mm Fantasy and a very large 15mm Fantasy collection already) but I just love converting, and the conversion possibilities in the 1/72 plastic ranges are just to good to pass up.
Having limited funds, I will keep this project limited to small skirmish sized forces, so to start with I have ordered 3 boxes of Dark Alliance figs, (modern Amazon infantry, Cimmurian infantry and half orc infantry) 1 Caesar minis adventurers box, and a Caesar Greek hoplites box (I will do a separate post as to why hoplites later)
While waiting for these to arrive I went searching for figs I already own that could be pressganged into this project, and found some perfect halflings, these are 15mm Essex medieval figures, they are already sculpted a little chubby, so will work well, I will add some green stuff details (pot bellies, maybe bare feet if I have the skill) then re paint them, thinking of a green/yellow scheme, not sure how I should base these, I'm thinking that I would like to do this project with individual bases, but that I may do the halflings 4 to a base, with some characters individually based, the plastic German is there for scale, all thoughts/comments welcome.

Looking forward to seeing how your project goes.

The Dark Alliance range has some nice figures in it.I have most of them. The Mounted Modern Amazon set is very bad as the riders just dont fit onto the mounts. They could have been a great set but it will take quite a bit of work to get them sorted for riding.

I've only got the infantry Amazons (still in the post) which I will use more as female characters than a force on its own, I may get the mounted ones more for the mounts than riders, those dinosaurs would make good dark elf mounts, we will see.

The mounts from the Amazon set are really nice pieces it is just a shame the riders dont fit onto them easily.

There are also Trolls out from Dark Alliance now with more sets on the way.

The Cimmarian sets are nice and usefull sets to have.

Ceasar miniatures have also recently released a second set of Orc's and there Lizardmen and Ratmen are both good sets too.

Hi guys

I have been toying with this in my mind for a while, was tossing up whether to do it in 15mm or 28mm, and finally settled on 1/72nd plastics, I imagine this group is on a quest from their far off island Hellenistic civilisation to find a lost magical item and have vowed to not return until they find it, they have been wandering the world (D&D/Warhammer type world rather than classical Greek mythology type world) for a decade or more, their traditional clothing/body armour has worn down and been replaced by local stuff, but they proudly hang onto their shields and helms.
Figs used, Dasrk allience Cimmerian set 2, and Modern Amazons set 1 bodies, Caesar Miniatures Greek Warriors heads and shields.
I still need to clean the figs up a bit, add some more green stuff detail and tart the bases up, these will be used in a cold climate setting like frostgrave, thinking of also doing a Norse warband using the same Cimmerians converted with Viking heads/shields.

Lever modifications. I also have the set, but currently am a bit intimidated by all the flash and the soft plastic.

How did you tackle that and how do you prime them?

Just trimmed with a hobby blade, undercoated in cheap black spray paint, no issues, they look very good just in undercoat, it pulls them together nicely.

Hi guys

So after finishing the conversion work on my fantasy Greek Hoplites (shield decals arrived today, so will be painting them soon) I decided to work on some chaos warrior conversions, I wanted a group of at least 10 heavily armoured warriors (I will also do lighter chaos marauders) so here are 10 warriors and a standard bearer, will now work on a champion, want to make him a little larger than the rest, these aren't quite finished, want to swap out some of the weapons, and clean up some area, they're not perfect, but they will do, all comments welcome.

Hi guys

I've nearly finished my chaos champion, he was originally the standard bearer from the dark alliance half orc set, I cut him in half and added 2mm to his height, I'm thinking of removing his hair and making him a baldy, I swapped out the standard for a head, and changed his orc sword to an axe, not the best pic, but what do you think? should I make any changes?

Hi guys

(note: this battle group will be auctioned of when finished, all proceeds will be donated to feeding the homeless in Jesus's name)

These have a lot of work to be done before painting can start, they are the start of a High elf battle group, which will consist of 6 Cav, 10 spear, 10 swords, 10 archers, and 1 each of champion/general, standard barer, musician, and mage.
Still need to add an armoured skirt, helm plumes, bow and quiver, neck armour on some horses, shoulder armour, swords, shields, lances and pennants.
I'm thinking of painting them white and light turquoise similar to my 15mm eldar conversions, but going with a really light turquoise.
Base figures used were Zvezda Napoleonic Russian guard cossacks, and Caesar Greek heads.
All comments welcome.

Hi guys

These still have a bit of work to be done, gauntlets, bow and quiver, lance and pennant, and a plume on the horses head, the pics are blown up double size, so the imperfections stand out, they are not that bad in person.
How do the shields look? they are only tacked on so can be changed, do they look Elven enough? also looking at adding some detail to the leaders helm, maybe some dragon wings? all comments welcome.

Hi guys

Well, as with most of my threads on LAF, this one is being ignored, not sure why, most other forums I get some interaction with other members, but I will persist for a while longer.

(note: this battle group will be auctioned of when finished, all proceeds will be donated to feeding the homeless in Jesus's name)(note: this battle group will be auctioned of when finished, all proceeds will be donated to feeding the homeless in Jesus's name)

OK, so I have changed the shields (much better I feel) and added the last bits of details, just need to add feathers to the arrows, add a couple of lances, then base, I will mount the lance pennants after painting the figure, how are the new shields? all comments welcome.

Nice to see some 1/72 projects though I am staying with 28mm and 15mm for fantasy, though I did pick up the Dark Alliance Trolls to use for 28mm figures.

Hi guys

Happy NY, first post of 2020, I want to get some progress done on my 1/72nd fantasy project this year, they will be for use in both generic and middle earth settings, have been working on my Dwarves over the last couple of days, these are mostly Dark Alliance Dwarves with some converted Strelets Saxons, I will be converting more Saxons to Rohirum warriors at a later date, Elves and Orcs are also on the cards as well as a few other none middle earth forces and characters.

wow, I love your creativity in the conversions  8)

also thanks for the tip regarding halflings ("15mm Essex medieval figures"). I'm a big fan of the 1/72 scale and I'm always interested in such off-scale-miniatures that matches perfectly :D

Maybe 15mm Essex Vikings could be used as 1/72 dwarves?  ::)
Title: Re: 1/72 WIP Dwarves

Yeah, I could see the Viking range used as dwarves, I won’t myself, as they would be smaller in stature than the dark alliance Dwarves, and if you used Essex for dwarves and halflings they would be the same size, I think Dwarves should be a tad bigger than halflings.
Title: Re: 1/72 WIP Dwarves
Post by: 102-year-old-man on January 22, 2020, 09:00:01 PM
yeah, i can see the point!

I usually use the 18mm dwarves of the manufacturer Eureka für my 1/72 scale RPG games

I have read that those dwarves also match for 1/72 scale:
https://em4miniatures.com/collections/plastic-fantasy-miniatures/dwarves
However i haven't seen one of them in real life  ???

Hi guys

Really getting into my 1/72 Fantasy project, started on my Orc horde, it will be a big 1, for the infantry I have 2 Dark Alliance box's of Orc, 2 of goblins, 1 half Orc, and 1 Caesar Orc box, whilst they are all pretty good figures I've decided to heavily convert most of them, this is my first batch, still need to add armour, helmets, shields, hair etc with green stuff, and need to shape the spear heads with my dremel.

Just WOW @Gunner

May I ask which glue you use for glueing the plastic together?

And also how did you mount the spears? (I'm guessing: dipping the mini into hot water and then punching the needle through?)

Nice work, I still like 1/72 and it is a lot easier now to do fantasy with it.
oh that's true. Dark Alliance brings 1/72 fantasy on a new level!  :-*
They already released 50 fantasy sets (http://theredbox.com.ua/alliance.htm), in average maybe 10 different poses per set. Meaning 500 1/72 fantasy poses. And this is just Dark Alliance  :o

The parts a pinned and glued with super glue, hands are drilled for the spears, if you want to do similar, get yourself a hobby pin drill and set of small hobby drill bits, they go for around $15-20 I think, then it’s just patients and try not to stab yourself with the drill bit, done it several times.

These are not finished, still have a fair bit of painting to do.

Just doing a few WIP pics to show how they are coming along, these are the first 36 1/72nd Dwaves, heavily converted From the Dark Alliance set, as well as Strelets Anglo saxons, I have another 36 to go, as well as some Strelets English longbowmen I will be converting to Dwarven bows, will be doing some handgunners as well.

Hi guys

My WIP Witch hunter warband for various fantasy settings, need to buy 4 more dogs, and make some crossbow men, still have a fair bit of GS work to do, want to add some length to the back of the hoods, add weapons, pouches and packs, then do the bases, I'm going to do zenithal undercoating on these guys. The black figs are brush undercoated Reaper Bones, the grey figs are converted Victrix plastic Anglo-Danes, I also want to incorporate the 3 older figs, the 2 hooded figs are old GW clerics, I think the paladin maybe old reaper, they are all to short at the moment, will be stripping them and conversion to add 5mm of height.

The bases I'm using are a little larger than normal, they cost me $1 for a pack of 30 plastic poker chips, and I don't mind a little extra base to add detail to.

Hi guys

An update on my Witch hunter warband for RPG/Skirmish style games, still some work to do on these guys, have enlargened the 3 older GW figures, adding about 5-6mm in height, they are nice figures but they are a lot shorter than modern figures, I cut the 2 robed figs below the knees, pined them and filled in the space with GS which I shaped to look like their robes, the palidan got a leg replacement with a set of Perry plastic knight legs, his original legs were very short, it was almost a perfect conversion, the end result looks natural and no GS was needed to fill gaps etc, I added a pre conversion pic at the bottom, will be workinhg on their bases tonight.

Hi guys

Really enjoying 28mm Fantasy at the moment, my latest project is 28mm plastic Dwarves for all manner of skirmish/RPG settings, I will expand the gunners and crossbows, maybe add a unit of regular bows, a unit of spears, and another 1 or 2 of axes/swords, used Othemark plastic Dwarves as my basis and parts from several other plastic sets, Perry, Warlord games, and Fireforge, I also have a a fair few plastic GW Dwarves to play with, although they are shorter, I may extend there legs a little to get them to a similar height.

Hi guys

Some more work done on my Dwarven army and a group of adventure Dwarves, most are Oathmark, used some converted Warlord games Vikings to make most of the archers, I have some GW Dwarves I can add to the force by lengthening their legs, or I can keep using the WG Vikings, which blend in really nice, I will play around with the GW Dwarves and see what I can do, these are ready to base, square or round? I will leave the adventure Dwarves at this height, they are a lot shorter than the Oathmarks but they have their own charm, the humans are for scale comparison.

Hi guys

A Fantasy commission complete, I don't get many fantasy commissions, doing mostly historicals, its good for a change occasionally, these are a mix of manufacturers, some are resin and plastic GW figures, I really dislike GW resin figures, they seem very fragile to me, the Elven cav in particular are terrible, nice detail though, I do like the plastic beastmen though, will need to get some of those for myself.

Hi guys

ADVICE NEEDED

I'm always looking to improve, I have some questions re these figures, they are not 100% finished, theres some small details I need to complete, but looking for overall advise on how I can make them look better, how to go to the next level, this is my style, are some styles better than others? do some styles have a better upper limit? will I need to change styles to improve or can I get better at this style? On my blog there are heaps of closer pics.

1) How do I improve these figs? Go to the next level?

2) is the colour pallet OK? I love teal, but does it work here, teal and black?

3) anything overall that I could do to improve?

4) specifically the faces, any suggestions to improve?

5) how would you rate them out of 10?

6) do they work as a warband? are they to similar/uniform for the subject matter?

They look good to me generally really like the basing. I'm honestly not sold on the teal I feel like its a bit bright for the subject matter. Witch hunters to my mind should be dark and foreboding I would have been tempted by a dark red (like a burgundy), dark blue or a dark purple. Another option is lots of blacks highlighted in a combination of warm and cold greys to give variation. I do the same as you and try to tie in warbands/armies with limited colour pallets so I get what your trying to do but the teal seems to overly dominate the group shot in slightly jarring way to my eye. Hope that doesn't sound harsh I generally avoid critiquing other peoples work but as you asked.

No, that’s fair, what about a darker teal?  have a look at the edging on the warrior priests robes, I’m sort of on the same page as you, I might think about dark red, I have the Sisters if Sigmar band, was going to do a dark red/cream colour with them, could do teal/cream for them and black/dark red for these guys, I’ll give it some thought.
Title: Re: Advice Needed WIP Sisters of Sigmar Warband

Yeah teal for the sisters of sigmar with a pale contrast colour would work. They , at least to me, suit a light bright colour schene being a force of good light in a dark world. Witch Hunters to me are always a dark grim breed so opposite to chaos they almost close the circle from the other direction and just suit dark sombre colours.

Title: Re: Advice Needed WIP Sisters of Sigmar Warband

Since you asked....

I think the teal is too bright. A darker teal may work but I tend to agree with Diablo Jon. Somber colors evoke witch hunter grim in my imagination. Various greys leading into black for a Puritan look. I am thinking maybe some inspiration from the movie version of Solomon Kane.

The faces look great. It looks like a coherent warband, nix mix of diversity but still coherent.

I do not know Mordheim very well but the group looks like it could use a rallying piece, not a standard per es but something iconic if you pardon the pun. Even if there are no rules for such in the game. Just something for visual story telling. Maybe something with fire? I do not see any torches. Nothing says witch hunters like burning witches. Maybe convert the hooded figure on the far right to have a staff with a burning top? I know that runs the risk of making him look too much like a fire wizard though.

Overall a great group. I hate rating other artists out of ten because my technical skills are so poor but I can tell you what I like.

If that band is for Mordheim there are too many of them (12 figures maximum), too many Hero Characters (5 not the max 4), no flagellants (apart from the dog, the best fighters amongst the henchmen) and no missile weapons apart from the pistols which are only really useful in melee.
Assuming the maximum heroes: 1 Captain, 3 Witch Hunters and a Warrior Priest with the equipment on those figures is very close to 400 of your 500 starting budget. Taking the other 9 as Zealots equipped as in the picture (except for the heavy armoured wanna be hero guy) is about 300 points so 700 total before taking any "extras" like charms, potions, ropes, lanterns etc.

The band looks great but lacks balance and does not work to the strengths of the options you have with a Witch Hunter force.  For example: your Zealots are 28-30 points each for a Weapon Skill 2, Strength 3, Initiative 3 character, the Wardogs are 15 points each for Weapon Skill 4, Strength 4 Initiative 4. The only advantage to Zealots is they can use a Bow (although badly), but you have not given them any.

Obviously if this band is for any other game then feel free to ignore everything I just wrote  ::)

These are not finished yet, (need to finish a few details, do some more weathering to the bases, add some highlights to the belts/pouches) but I took some of the advice offered regarding my last post, and changed the teal colour to a dark red, and lightened the bases a bit, I think they look much better, what do we think?

Hi guys

Haven't done a review for a while, but these figs are so nice I thought others would like to see them if they don't already know about them, they are not new, but the first time I have bought them, I paid full price for these figs and was not asked to review them.

I actually bought these for a Conquistador based fantasy war band/adventurer team, for settings like Mordheim and Frostgrave, so I will be converting them a little to fit.

They are available from Eureka Miniatures https://www.eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_781&sort=3a (https://www.eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_781&sort=3a)

Historical accuracy : Being a commission painter I have a pretty good all round knowledge, and have very good knowledge in some periods, unfortunately the renascence is not my best period, I would have to do a study to give an accurate review in this area, all I can say is that they look right to me, accuracy will not be a problem for me as they will be used in a fantasy setting.

Proportions : I have pictured them alongside an old GW knight, a Perry plastic knight, and a newer GW plastic Imperial figure, they fit well with them all, they are sized somewhere between the Perry and newer GW fig, not quite as hefty as the GW fig though, but I would have no problem mixing them with any of these makes, anatomically they look correct to me, nice limb proportions, nothing looks out of place.

Sculpting : these are really nice, I'm quite impressed, very natural looking, nice delicate details, when I finish my current project, I'm looking forward to getting into these.

Poses : All nice and natural, nothing over the top, if you were going to do muti basing they look like they would rank up nicely, and theres enough "action" for individuality.

Equipment : everything is in proportion, no over the top GW weapons here, I asked for all helmeted figures in my order, which Nic at Eureka as usual, filled my order as directed, there are figures with soft caps/hats available in the range, and different weapons, also mounted figs (which I didnt need for this project) plenty of poses to, lots of variety, theres also a nice range of Portuguese figures, they are very similar, but a little less flamboyant, a little more scruffy, nice though. The dogs and handler are a nice addition to my band to, like those.

Customer service : Everything arrived safe and as I asked for, (postage was within country) Eureka Miniatures are great, I have never had an issue with them, price is pretty good to.

Almost forgot, I ordered a female empire looking figure as well from laughing Monk miniatures sold by Eureka Miniatures, found Here https://www.eurekamin.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=815_816&products_id=13057 (https://www.eurekamin.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=815_816&products_id=13057) its advertised as 32mm which seems about right, (bottom pic) looks like it would fit in well with GW, is a pretty nice fig, it cost double that of the Eureka ones, but a quarter that of a GW character figure and just as nice I feel, nice natural pose, nicely sculpted, I will pic up a couple more of these Laughing monk figs as characters.

Hi guys

Picked this D&D Slaad mini up on the weekend, and liked him so much I painted him straight away (very rare for me) he turned out nice, thinking of using him as a big guy for a Slann themed blood bowl team.

Hi guys

These Blood Bowl Orks are not finished, still a bit of weathering to go, but though I would show them anyway, its a basic 12 figure set, have ordered a none GW Troll and 3 Goblins, and I will convert a couple more figs to fill out the team, all comments welcome.

Hi guys

Done some more work on my teddy bear terrain tiles, it will be a general purpose board for all eras and genres, designed to fit 15mm-28mm, have shaved the dirt roads out with clippers, reduced the tyre ruts down with a long necked bbq lighter, I'll glue sand into the tyre ruts and paint brown, the long brown/white stripe on the right will be a river, I plan on filling it with clear resin after detailing the river bed, and will be shaping the grass in differant areas, and colouring it various greens/yellows/browns, I need to make more tiles with a single end to end road, have done enough t/y/x intersection, and will do more farming and plain fields, as well as some scatter hills and other terrain, plan on train tracks, houses to suit Russian, Normandy and some fantasy/Medieval buildings and a bridge accross the river as well as some shallow river crossings.

Hi guys

Have done some more work on my terrain tiles, (have laid it out without really trying to make a coherent map, just for these pics) painted the road dark brown, and gave them a very light dry brush, this makes them look muddy, not sure if I want this terrain to be lush and muddy, or dry and dusty if I choose dry and dusty I will need to add more yellow to the grass and heavily dry brush the roads, as this is a generic terrain for all genres (but I am working on my WWII Russian projects currently) should I keep it lush or go dry? I've also got a piece of sandy coloured fur coming, enough for another 6 tiles, which will need a heavy green painting to mix in with this terrain, with those 6 tiles I'll do 3 with single end to end roads, and 3 plain fields/crop fields.

My next job is to seal the river sections with masking tape, then cover with grit and paint, I will be filling these with clear resin, so the masking tape will stop the resin leaking out between the cork and foam.

Title: Re: Update Teddy bear fur terrain tiles part 3
Post by: Gunner Dunbar on August 20, 2023, 10:29:20 PM
 Hi guys

I made a vow at the beginning of the year to only do 1/72 WWII for my own project this year, and I did really well, have bone nothing else, got a lot done, still heaps to do, however I broke my vow this weekend, and dabbled in some 10mm fantasy 3D printing, man these things are tiny, it’s sometimes hard to get a good perspective of real size when working in CAD, have just finished washing these prints, they turned out pretty good, some of the shields didn’t print well due to support issues, all these supports are the smallest I can do, and they are going to be hard to remove without damage I think, I may have to go back to the drawing board and thicken everything up, weapon shafts are so thin, one careless handling will damage them.

A few questions for the 10mm fantasy enthusiast, how tall do you make/are your Dwarves? I’ve done these about 6-7mm, and for those that 3D print, I have used 28mm STLs, shrunk them down, have others successfully done this? Did you thicken/strengthen everything? when I was doing this I tried to make a lot of individuals, headswaps, pose changes, tried to keep a lot of detail, but I don’t know if it was worth the effort with them being so small, how do other printers handle 10mm fantasy?

I’ll take some more pics after removing the supports, curing and undercoating to pick out the detail.

A bit easier to see now they have some paint on them. The melee ones look pretty dwarf like, but the archers look very human (at least what I can make out from the photos).

I can have a measure of some of my 10mm dwarves to see what size they are - but I know that there are differences between the various metal manufacturers

Yes please, I printed out some Empire figures from thingyverse, specifically labeled warmaster, they turned out nice, but my Dwarves are way to small, halfling size, I may keep the arches as halfling archers, not sure, I’ve bought an dark elf army pack off Forest dragon to play around with, I’m sort of still deciding on what scale I’m going to go with 10mm, 15mm or 20mm.

Had an attempt to measure the 10mm dwarves I have. The measurements are from bottom of cast base to top of head - and are somewhat approximate as I’m measuring painted and based figures.

Copplestone - 11mm
GW Warmaster - 10mm
GW Battle of Five armies - 8-9mm

There is definite visual differences between the 3 ranges with corresponding differences in bulk too. The Copplestone and Warmaster ones are fairly close and work fine on the table. The BoFA ones are small in comparison.

I didn’t have any Pendraken ones to hand to measure - but they are even bigger.

For comparison a GW Warmaster Empire figure was about 11mm tall.

Excellent, thanks, mine are way to small, I’m thinking I’ll just buy Dwarf files.

10mm Wood Elf basing test
 Hi guys
Testing out some bases I designed by CAD for my forest dragon 10mm wood elves, going for a wooded area look, I like how they have turned out, going to do a different theme for each army I do, unfortunately I thought of doing this after I had printed out and started painting a dark elf army, I guess I could start over.

They look good - I like the terrain on the bases.

I don’t know if they will be difficult to paint like this though? With the old WM figures cast in strips, they figures were almost 2D as they sides of the figures joined each other, and with these I always painted the two strips separately pre-basing.

These look to have a lot of overlaps, so brush access might be hard. I assume if it is, then you can modify the files so a few figures are separate, who can be added back in after painting?

I’m thinking 10mm is just to small for me, I’m going to resurrect my 1/72 fantasy projects.

 Hi guys

I’ve been inspired to resurrect my 1/72 fantasy project, have been messing around with printing 10mm fantasy, and been having fun with it, but I struggle to paint that small, I have lots of 15mm, and 28mm fantasy figs, but I’m just drawn to 1/72 for some reason, I’ve got a fair bit on the go in this scale, and have just picked these three projects to start with, high elf cavalry, the plastics a little fragile, these are mad3 from Zvezda Russian guard Cossacks, I’ll need to replace or fix the lances, and finish of a few details as well as the bases. Chaos foot knights, converted from dark alliance Cimmerians, and some Greek mythology inspired warriors, converted from the same Cimmerians and Caesar hoplites. Need to dust them off and start painting.

Title: Re: Resurrecting some old 1/72 fantasy projects
Post by: Gunner Dunbar on September 02, 2023, 08:23:37 AM
 Hi guys

Got a little paint on my fantasy hoplites, a bit to do on them yet, the shield decals were a pain due to the curve on the shield, scored them with lots of cuts with a hobby blade and used decal softener, did tge job in the end.

Undercoated the chaos knights, red or olive green? I’m sort of partial to the nurgle look.

Printed out some hobgoblins (free from thingyverse), a forest dragon dark elf (for scale, need to make him thinner, than I’ll print the whole army) and some green skin miniatures beastmen archers, will be adding some chaos Dwarves to the hobgoblins, and adding a lot to the beastmen, the details on the forest dragon and greenskin minis are a bit chunky as they are designed for 10mm, but I don’t mind.

Awesome, can't wait to see them finished.
25mm Goblins fit very well next to 1/72, I have to try that.
Where did you get the Beastmen at the bottom, are they 3D printed?

The beastmen are blown up 10mm greenskin miniatures, the hobgoblins are reduced 28mm from thingyverse.

Incredible conversions! I would love to see your Elf cavalry painted. Regarding your hoplites, they're among the very best conversions I've seen in 1/72.

Thanks guys

Calling these fantasy warriors finished, the base figure used for the conversions were dark alliance Cimmerians, with Caesar miniatures Greek heads and hoplons, and green stuff, also have printed out some nurgle themed minis to add to my chaos warrior conversions, they are also made from the Cimmerian figures.
