Title: The Gangs of Old New York - terrain plans
Post by: Schweizer on February 17, 2017, 08:00:49 PM
Thought I'd share some process stuff for a gaming project I'm working on.  I did about 250 paper figures and was intending to release them the way I usually do (as pdfs for folks to print and cut themselves) based on descriptions from Herbert Asbury's 1929 THE GANGS OF NEW YORK.  Some pals who make RPG stuff convinced me to work with them to do them at wargaming scale on that punch-out paperboard, so we're going that route.

Dealing with the templates and such has made the character pieces, which had been ready to roll, require quite a bit more work, but it's allowed for something much better so far as the overall project goes: fit-together terrain pieces.

I've got to get all the math right on these to get the templates perfect before I paint up the final art, and we're trying to figure out the best way to make some of the buildings modular, so that folks can mix and match if they're inclined.  But I'm excited about the prospect; papercraft buildings are pretty tough to design for other folks to use, so these hard precut slotted pieces take a lot of the folding stuff out of the equation.

Rough plans:

All of the buildings will be based buildings from the Five Points slum between roughly 1840 and 1880.

It's actually going to be closer to 300 characters now, all unique, and quite a few extraneous things like carts, fire wagons, etc.  Since these might be of use to folks when they're all done, I'll keep y'all abreast of how they're coming along.

Weird, I'm working on something similar. Where are you at with the figures? PM me, would you?

"so these hard precut slotted pieces take a lot of the folding stuff out of the equation."

I'm usually skeptical of all things paper just because of fumble fingers, but decidedly raising my hopes. And, truly, an awesome direction to go.
