Title: The Planters Wife - The Chase - 2nd AAR
Post by: Vagabond on February 20, 2017, 09:22:37 PM
The 2nd Part of the tale is on page 2 - Cheers

The Kidnap of the Planters Wife
Life was good for Patricia Cholmley-Smythe, she was married to a successful planter, living in a pleasant part of Africa, it was hot but there was plenty of shade from the big trees surrounding the property, she had servants to look after her, a big raw boned hound called Bruno who watched over her and a husband who was successful, wealthy, and devoted, an ideal life in every way.

What could possibly go wrong!!!!

There had been rumours that the Arabs were becoming more active in the slave trade but this was quite a long way to the north, and anyway they were not trading in white slaves, they were not going to run the risk of antagonising the British or Germans or even the Belgians.

The setting is Banrock Station; a plantation in Africa, there is no overall view of the station, due to the ineptitude of the official cameraman, you will not be suprised to hear he was sacked shortly after the incident. The station comprises 3 main buildings, the Cook House is on the eastern side of the clearing, right hand side, the workers quarters are on the West, left and the main bungalow to the south, in the foreground.

These are the occupants in and around the station at the time of the incident;

The Planter and his chums have gone out shooting and will be back later.

From left to right Patricia his wife, Tang Xiao Peng the Chinese cook, Ato the boy, Jaques the man servant, Rakia the Indian maid, Henry Wyncham a chum and Khatiti the cooks assistant.

These are the native warriors (would be slavers) led by the chiefs daughter Jemila.

Turn 1
The natives enter on the left of the table, Jemila splits them in to two groups, the far one is to make a sweep around through the sheep pens to the north, past the red pickup and block any escape down the road which leads to the nearest town, 70 miles away. The main group led by her is going straight for the Bungalow, where they expect to find the white woman who will make them rich, if she is not there then they will search the station until they find her.
The encounter tokens are green pennies. The nearest one is in amongst the pine cones; I mean Boa and Palm trees.

Turn2
Unfortunately for Jemela the 1st encounter turned out to be Henry Wyncham who was the only effective opposition to the raid. As the warriors emerged from the bush they both took an insight test, Henry won and pulled his pistol to snap fire at the enemy, for surely that is who they must be, spears, shields and mischief in their eyes, yes - they are the enemy.

His pistol goes ‘click’, there is an ominous silence and then a low sound ‘bugger, bugger, bugger’ as ‘H’ realises that he did not load his pistol last night because of the revelry, the wine, the port, the whiskey, ahh the whiskey, Bunahaibahn, the most glorious malt in the world, mmm he could still smell it, and taste it, or was that fear! Bugger, bugger, bugger, there was that low moan again. Jemila’s warriors were so startled by the warrior in the blue coat, chanting his war cry, ‘bugger, bugger, bugger’ that they halted, failed reaction test and gave ‘H’ the moment he needed.

Turn 3
The moment went on a little longer as they both failed to activate on the next turn, ‘H’ was getting a little worried by this time, he could see at least 5 evil looking faces staring out at him from the undergrowth and one rather nice one, Jemila, but she also had a very sharp looking spear in her shapely hand.

Turn 4
Henry has an empty gun; Patricia needs protection, time to go. An English Gentleman does not run from his enemies and so this was a strategic retreat to the bungalow where he knew there were a couple of shotguns, a very large Elephant gun as well as a couple of pistols, hopefully loaded this time.

Henry runs, I mean retreats into the bungalow in the immediate foreground, closely followed by the locals.

He ran past the maid, shouting for her to shut and bolt the door and went with all hast into the study, pulling the shot gun off the wall, checked and thanked his god that it was loaded. The natives ran into the yard, Jemila gives quick orders to her men, sending 2 to the workers hut (on the left), 2 to the cook house (on the right) and the rest with her to the bungalow.
They failed their fast move and so this gave ‘H’ the breathing space he needed.

The bungalow’s interior is missing and wrong scale – sorry, so this plan will have to do. It’s only a game ;).

Kiambu was 1st through the door into the bungalow, the poor Indian maid had not had time to shut this after Henry the whirlwind had passed through, she screamed as Kiambu hit her with the side of his hand, she fell, striking her head on the door post and was unconscious (OOF) before hitting the floor.

Note the encounter markers, a target rich environment I think it is called.
Turn 5
Henry picks up a box of cartridges and hearing the maids scream steps back into the main living room and mindful of the fact it is a double barrel shot gun fires the right hand barrel at Kiambu, hits him and the Impact of the weapon is 2 – dice roll 2 Kiambu is dead before he can blink. The rest of Jemila’s group halt outside the bungalow, they failed receiving fire, man down tests, one or the other, can’t remember which. It did not seem a terribly good idea to go rushing into a small house with an angry Englishman blasting away with a shotgun. They were proved right.

Bomani and Okang charge into the cook house, Tang Xiao Peng the Chinese cook is alert and waiting with his meat cleaver at the ready, as a Rep 3 character I had not expected him to hang around but he surprised me by killing Bomani dead in the 1st round of combat.

Okang fails his man down test and retires back into the yard.

The 3 guys in the sheep fold find Bruno, or rather he finds them and attacks, he has not read the rules, and shield and spear armed warriors are more to be feared than the local postman, he takes a wound and is OOF. Or should that be WOOF.

Mbiya and Karanja rush into the workers hut and find it empty. 1st none event.

Okang stamps his foot in frustration, who would have thought a cook could be so fearsome, and a Chinese cook at that. He’s obviously not seen any Jackie Chan films recently, anyway he fails to activate as does Jemila’s men, she is hanging around on the veranda and the others are fearful of more body parts coming flying through the door, theirs if they enter. Mbiya and Karanja rush across the yard and discover bales of food, not the would be white slave woman, but at least we will have full bellies tonight they think. The dog killers come into the yard and discover a load of ivory, all crated up by the Red Pickup. Henry loads his pistol and waits for the onslaught.

Tang, with time on his hands does something stupid, what can that be, oh I know he thinks, I’ll go outside, leave the safety of my cook house and see what is happening in the world.

Turn 7
The dog killers charge towards Tang and he promptly runs away. Wise man.

Jemila finally plucks up courage and charges through the door only to receive the left hand barrel of the shotgun and drops dead on the floor. H passes 2D and reloads this move, “bring it on”. Or should that be “top hole old thing”, whatever, he is ready and confident that the next one through the door will ‘make his day’.
Turn 8
All warriors inactive, Henry waits.

Turn 9
3 of the warriors pull a barrel over to the window of the dining room and as there is no one in the room, (2nd none event) they climb in, the last man by mistake knocks the barrel over, they are trapped and will have to go through the door into the sitting room where that devil ‘H’ is waiting patiently. The dog killers search the cook house and find Ato hiding under some sacks. The 2 men who were with Jemila contemplate what they will tell the Chief when he asks after his daughter, not a pleasant thought, they are inactive.
Turn 10

All inactive, except H who waits.

Turn 11
Mbiya opens the door to the sitting room, Henry passes insight test and fires 1 barrel, knocks Mbiya down but fails to hurt him. Mbiya shouts to the other 2 in the room to kill the white dog, but they think, bugger that for a game of cowboys, i.e., they fail their receive fire test (the big 12 bore strikes again) and hide behind the door, the others fail to activate.
Turn 12
Jemilas men still thinking what to tell the chief, Mbiya stands up, H shoots him with the other barrel but misses, whupps.
Turn 13
Henry passes 2D and loads the shotgun immediately, this is a good job because everyone charges him, Mbiya gets the 1st barrel and dies quickly, he had lived a charmed life up until now, Babu coming in from the veranda gets the 2nd barrel which knocks him back through the door. Mbiyas group duck back but Idi pushes past Babu and stabs at Henry, who turns the shot gun around and uses it like a club, after a long drawn out fight they both take a breather.

2 of the dog killers group climb into the bed room, no one there, (3rd non event)
Babu stands up and Idi continues fight with Henry, big mistake, H clubs him down and another one bites the dust.
Turn 15
All the warriors pass morale for man down but only Babu activates and charges. Henry has miraculously not broken the Purdy shotgun, yet again he passes 2D to load and fire in 1 go and blasts both barrels at Babu. I think he must have either been getting a little jittery and pulled both triggers or he was so confident that he would be able to load quickly again that he did not care. Good job he fired twice because the 1st shot missed, probably a bit rushed, however the 2nd shot did the trick and Babu went down OOF.
Turn 16
Everyone stunned by the noise of both barrels and failed to activate.
Turn 17
Henry recovered 1st and loaded both barrels, he was right to be confident, natives failed to activate.
Turn 18
The guys who had broken in to the bedroom finally managed to build up their courage and charge Henry who only passed 1D and they were on him before he could get off a shot, having killed 4 and OOF a 5th he must have been getting tired by now. Jojo gets a lucky break and stabs Henry in the side, he goes down OOF but what a hero, Jojo respects that he has beaten a great warrior and does not take revenge for his fallen comrades and the Chiefs daughter by killing him while defenceless, this may be a mistake, who know what the Chief will think, a quick salute with his spear to the fallen hero is all he can manage, Okang who was following Jojo nips into the 2nd bedroom, no one there, (4th Non event)

Planter and chums arrive on the table.

Turn 19
Planter and chums fail to activate, Jojo enters last bedroom, gold dust there is Patricia Cholmley Smythe, the prize, she is unarmed, I needed 70% for her to have a pistol and threw 74%, no luck there, the fight is fierce but short and he wins Patricia is knocked down and  they have their prize, let’s get out of here shouts Karanja who is outside guarding the boy, he can see the planter in the distance, we are with you replies Jojo and they pick up the wounded Babu, the Indian Maid and Patricia and set off for their village.

The bad guys make their escape with a rather wild eyed Rakia, must still be stunned from the blow to the head.
Nothing to do with the painting. :?

This is really a disaster for the natives 5 dead including Jemela the Chiefs daughter and 1 wounded, they did achieve their objective which was kidnapping P C-S to be sold to the Arabs for a slave but the price agreed is not going to cover the head price on the lost warriors.

This scenario was intended to be an introductory scene to a chase across Africa with the planter trying to get his wife back.
It should have been a walk over, 11 native warriors against Henry Wyncham and Patricia Cholmley-Smythe supported by a cook and servant who both only had a small chance of fighting, and not doing it well even if they did.
Henry or ‘H’ as he became known, turned it into Rorkes Drift, I don’t ever remember rooting for a little lead man so hard before.
Will the Planter call on his chums and give chase; of course he will. No one would leave a good looking woman like Patricia Cholmley-Smythe in the hands of slavers. There is revenge to be extracted, and honour to be saved.
Will Henry recover quickly enough to help with the rescue or will he and Bruno have to stay behind.

Please note, although 3 of the warriors were known as the dog killers, they only wounded Butch and no animals were actually harmed in the making of this film.

A final look at Henry the Hero, with the enemies he defeated.

If you are still here - Thanks for reading.

Positively awesome battle report!  Great running story with just enough game details thrown in along the way, all delivered in a most appropriate style!  Thanks for posting!

I concur, a most pleasant view-read.  A rare entertainment within the world of small metal folk.  And, of course, you realize many an additional equally entertaining yarn shall be expected as the planter chases after?  Tally-ho chaps.

But what the heck is a red pickup doing in a slavery game!?

An excellent game and write up, sounds loads of fun. I think H must have some Irish ancestry, he is in the same stuff as the "small boy with stick" who took down 3 Viking warriors in a monastery raid game I ran some years ago. lol

Thanks guys really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Glad you enjoyed it.

It was supposed to be the first of a series of games but so far only one more played.

Argonor the stuff on the walls is plumbers Hessian. Years ago plumbers wrapped water pipes in insulation wadding, it came on a roll about 100mm wide like a very thick bandage, and around that they wrapped this Hessian stuff same width and tied it on with string.
I've had it for years and this was the first time I used it.

Fifteens away - my inspiration for the game was a film Ashanti where Michael Caines wife was kidnapped and he chased all over the place to find her, they had speed boats cars and camels set in the latter half of the last century. My game is somewhere around 1930 1940, although the real reason for having the pick-up was because I had just painted it lol lol

Cheers

MaleGriffin and Traveler Man thanks for the comments, I have the follow on game almost written up so may bore you with another report soon.

Ushistoryprof - appreciate you reading and comments. I spent quite a few hours reading the pulp stuff on your blog some while ago, really enjoyed the characters backstories, something I do also, - if not as well.
It was all old stuff so never got to tell you how I enjoyed it - sorry

The Planters Wife – The Chase

Following on from my previous game when a group of Africans kidnapped Patricia the Planters wife. Krassimier Carlsen the Planter has set off in pursuit with some of his chums who were staying on the plantation at the time.

They have been travelling for 6 hours across the dry dusty plains and have arrived at a small settlement, and hope to get some news to enable them to track down the slavers.

The settlement just before the rescue party arrived from the west (left hand side).

The Rescuers

A rather large cast of rescuers, which was determined by the fact that I had just painted 5 trucks and I wanted them all in the game, so 5 trucks 2 people each therefore 10 rescuers, works for me.

Quick introductions from left to right.

Billy Ryan from Ireland, seems he left the country in a bit of a hurry, no one is quite sure why, but you don’t enquire too closely into a chaps background – don’t you know.
He doesn’t have much of the old Irish charm but has 2 pistols which tends to makes up for it.

James Hadleigh from somewhere in the Home Counties, rumour has it that he spent some time in acting but quit when he married into the landed gentry, his dear gal of a wife is at home in the ancestral pile near Epping Forrest. A man with a stiff upper lip, but that may just be the wax on his moustache.

Amelia Frost is a well known academic, primarily interested in ancient history. When young she had a riding accident, broke her leg very badly and it didn’t heal well. Now her constant companion is pain and a hardwood walking stick, which if you get on her wrong side you will feel both her walking stick and her pain, or rather your pain. The accident was horse and hounds not bicycle, just thought you needed to know.

Hassan Tarek an Egyptian colleague of Amelia’s, they are rumoured to be very good friends. He works at the Cairo Museum of Antiquities, Head of Hieroglyphics and Religion.

Krassimier Carlsen – Swedish national living in Africa for many years a successful plantation owner and the husband of Patricia Cholmley-Smythe, she who has been kidnapped by the slavers and he wants her back, and what Krassimier wants he usually gets.

Countess Juliana Elena Alverez, the well known Portuguese aristocrat and socialite, what is not so well known is that she has some very shady dealings with many of the Secret Service Departments of Western, and some also say Eastern Europe as well. She studied Languages at Lisbon, Paris and Moscow Universities and has a strong interest in the occult.

Gaylord Young is a long time friend of Krassimier, he is a fanatical hunter and a crack shot, unfortunately that is not a yellow shirt he is wearing, it is a yellow streak. A well known dandy and eccentric with a penchant for straw hats, acceptable at Henley but he regularly wears one in London, to his club, not the done thing.

Henry Wyncham, another long time friend of Krassimier, he served in the Royal Navy for many years and was an exceptional sailor, which in the era of steam is not of such value as it would have been a hundred years previously. He has a small sailing boat in which he has completed many long distance passages, and usually has a far away look in his eye. No one is totally sure if it is the horizon he is seeing or the influence of the wacky backy he gets from far away stations and burns in a foul smelling pipe. He was with Patricia when she was kidnapped and has some scores to settle.

Charles Beaumont a Cambridge fellow, academic and explorer of renown, normally found in hot dusty dry places, he enjoys riding camels unlike his Welsh ancestors, who were more sheep men, nowadays he spends more time in the desserts than in the university town of Cambridge. Only a few people know that his walking stick is not to help him with walking but with staying alive in some tricky circumstances, he was in the Cambridge fencing team, no prizes for guessing what the stick contains.

Cyril ‘Sapper’ McNeile served with distinction in the Great War in the Engineers, before joining the Royal Flying Corps so that he could get a better view of the trenches, he has been gassed, blown up and shot down more times than he or anyone else can remember, although he thinks the whiskey that he takes regularly for medicinal purposes may affect the memory.

The not so quick introductions over and on with the story.

Turn 1
The convoy enters the table from the Plains of Gaballa, this is the first habitation they have come across in 6 hours, hopefully they will find some information about the slavers and Patricia.

Turn 2
They lager up and form a defensive circle.

Turn 3
Everyone jumps out.

OK we will form 3 groups commands Krassimier. James Amelia and Billy, you investigate the hut we passed on the way in, then go to the native village, Henry and Juliana come with me and the rest of you watch our backs and the trucks.

Turn 4
James Amelia and Billy set off towards the hut as directed by Krassimier.

Turn 4
Krassimier Henry and Juliana set off towards the other hut, but straight away a savage dog charges out to meet them, good doggy, now ‘SIT’ commands Juliana and amazingly the dog does so.

Turn 5
Over on the far side of the table with James all is quiet but on Krassimiers side 3 natives burst out of the hut but seeing their dog playing with the white folks makes them happy, especially when they are addressed in their own language rather than some pidgin english.

Turn 5
3 Baboons burst out from the maize field and charge straight at Sapper who gets off a couple of quick shots, missing both times.

The baboons close rapidly but he gets off another 2 shots and hits the leader with 1 bullet, straight between the eyes and he goes down ‘dead as a dodo’, or is that ‘dead as a dead baboon’. This deters one of the animals who stops in his tracks, but the other leaps straight at Sapper, who manages to fight off the maddened beast.

Turn 6
Both Charles and Hassan snapfire at the baboon but miss, also fortunately they miss Saper as well, Gaylord looks on in a bit of a funk as the fight continues and the baboon tears lumps out of poor Saper, there is a lot of blood and he goes down under the angry animal.

Turn 6
The natives were just about to pass on some information when a crocodile lumbers out of the trees and attacks the natives, the fighting is inconclusive with Okangini dancing around like a girl. (no offence girls), this had happened so fast that Krassimier Juliana and Henry watched in amazement.

Turn 7
Three Chinamen come steaming out of the hut and two of them attack James and Billy Ryan. The other one fires on Billy but misses and when Yang Ting Kai charges straight at him it is a bit too much for Billy and he runs.

Yang runs faster and catches him. In spite of attacking Billy in the back when the chips are down the old Irish luck overcomes all and Billy decks Tang with a fast right hook. James mean time has drawn his sword and engages Dai in a sword fight. Dai has this great big huge chopper (which he’s quite proud of) but he is just not fast enough with it and James with a quick riposte sinks his sword full length into Dai who falls to the ground with a surprised look on his face.
The fight with the crocodile continues, both Henry and Krassimier shooting at the animal and missing. The baboon continues to chew on Sapper. Charles fires on it but misses and Hasan and Gaylord freeze.

Turn 8
James calmly sheaths his sword and pulls out his pistol but he is slow and Amelia, with the speed of a lecturer reprimanding a slow student pulls her pistol and gets off 2 shots at the remaining Chinaman standing on the veranda but misses, James finally gets his service revolver out of the flap holster (no gun fighter this man) and shoots and also misses, bugger this mutters Wing Young and disappears into the house and through the back window and into the trees.
He had a muzzle loading musket of unknown vintage it is no surprise that when under fire from modern pistols he took to his heels leaving Dai Wei (he might be of Welsh/Chinese decent) writhing on the ground.

Turn 8
Over on the other side of the board the croc finally gets a good grip on Okangini and pulls him down and out of the fight, everyone else seems to be stood around watching. I am writing this up some time after the game and can not remember why this would be.

Turn 8
Both baboons now attack Charles and Hasan, they stand their ground but fail to fire on the animals as they close the distance, Charles has a sword stick and after a quick fight he kills the animal but Hasan has a big red book and this is no match for sharp teeth and he is badly injured.

Turn 9
The other 2 natives and their dog attack the crocodile who manages to kill one of the natives but succumbs to numbers and is killed, Krassimier and chums did not activate and took no part in the fight.

Turn 9
Back in the lager both Charles and Gaylord shot at the final baboon and killed it although it took 3 hits to down it.

Turn 10
Blimy things are happening all the time, this turn a huge silverback male gorilla rushes out of the forest, Juliana takes one look and does a runner, too many beasties for me she thinks, but Henry and Krasimier are made of sterner stuff and stand their ground but are sufficiently shaken not to shoot before the beast is on them and they engage the big ape in hand to hand combat, a bit of a silly thing to do, Krasimier goes down to a gigantic backhand swipe but against all the odds Henry fighting like a demon kills the ape.
What a hero this man is.

Turn 11
Henry carries Krassimier back to the vehicles, and sees the result of the fight with the baboons. With 30% of their force seriously injured and without the driving force of Krasimier they decide to call it a day and get their friends back to the station and patched up.

A sad end to their attempt to recover Patricia from the slavers, will Krassimier recover and continue the chase, will his friends support him after the fiasco of this attempt, will Henry who has always carried a secret torch for Patricia go it alone next time!!!!

If you are still here – Thanks for reading

I get the feeling Henry will capture Patricia's heart in the end?

Excellent stuff !
Would you recall where the cauldron on tripod came from ??
:)

Sorry no, I've had it for years. My best guess would be Irregular Miniatures, they do all sorts of bits and pieces, I would have picked it up at some show, I have an animal on a spit that I'm almost sure it's theirs probably bought at the same time.

@Mad Lord thanks for your encouragement, pleased I could return the favour, I've spent many happy hours reading your ramblings erudite tales. ;)

Cheers, I'm pleased that's how it comes across because that's what I'm aiming for in my games, a light hearted adventure story driven by a loose set of rules.
The original story board allowed the chase to move on through various potential scenarios based on figures I have, eventually to some lost world plateau with dinosaurs and cavemen, which is going to be out of place here.

Thanks again for the interest

Ha Mad Lord, I was just thinking about you. Sir Marmaduke Langdale is just leaving Little Piddling in the Marsh to look for Mary Scroggins. I've just been re reading my post in Gothic horror to see who was involved and who survived to go on the search.

The table is set up and they are just about to leave the village. (I say table, but it's only 2' x 3' but I have a cunning plan to make it bigger.

I've just painted some nuns with guns (well wheel lock pistols), and big sticks and steely eyed glares to go with him.
