Title: 40k on a desert planet - oldhammer chaos beasts
Post by: Steam Flunky on March 08, 2017, 07:03:30 PM
Decided it was time to take a few photos of old 40k stuff. I think the last 40k miniatures i bought were a box of Kroot in 2001 so most of these will probably be older.

Warfare on a desert planet
My setting is Torq XLII, a desert mining world where many squats fled to after their homeworlds were invaded by tyranids. Around the same time a badly damaged eldar craftworld carried out a "controlled" crash landing on the planet stranding the survivors. Although the eldar and squats often trade peacefully with each other, the arrogance of the eldar and the squats pride and their ability to hold a grudge often leads to conflict.
Also on the planet is a small Kroot colony and a few imperial guard units such as the Ratlings in the first photos here below.

These photos are my first attempts to work with Photoshop (Photoshop Elements 11). Up to now i have only edited size and lighting on my photos with Photoscape, a free internet software download. My other photos are on a couple of threads on the fantasy board or here - http://steamflunky.deviantart.com/gallery/

Love stuff like this.  I wish Lead Adventure would put together a yearly album of the best paintjobs and best photos like this and sell it...what a great coffee table book it would make.

Thanks all.
Nice weather at last here in NW germany today so i will try to take a few photos outside where i can get some REAL fire and smoke into the pics. No idea if that will make the photos better but i remember as a kid how much fun it was to burn and blow up old model tanks and buildings :D and i dont think i have changed much.
If i know me, i will probably have no eyebrows left by this evening  lol

Yes, i use various brushes that i have often found here - https://www.brusheezy.com/ (mainly for light smoke, mist and lightning).
The big explosions and dust clouds  are pictures from the net (just google explosion) that i edit until they fit the photo.
As i started playing around with photoshop elements for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago i tried to write down where the brushes came from so i could link to them. Unfortunatly since 90% of the brushes either did not work on PSE 11 or just were not very good, i downloaded everything i could until i found some good ones that actually worked. By then of course, i could not remember where i found most of them.

Edit: Found some good explosions and fire here - http://www.psd-dude.com/

Here we stand!
A turning point in the history of craftworld N'kila Eldar stranded on Torq XLII. During the Battle of Gungen Pass, a unit of warriors led by Prince Finladon defended the flank of the line against waves of attacks by mining colony Squats long enough for reinforcments to arrive. This saved the downed craftworld from distruction and therefore gave the Eldar a chance to survive on the planet.

Around 15 or 20 years ago before Dark Eldar existed i collected eldar miniatures wearing robes and painted and converted some more with greenstuff hoods to make them fit in with this "Dark Eldar" look, hence the "bag". After dark eldar were released i repainted them in desert colours.

Great paintjobs, and your photoshop skills are nothing to scoff at either!

I really like the idea of creating a world to serve as background fluff for a multitude of forces you assemble.

Back when the Bolter and Chainsword forum was my regular haunt, I started doing the same. I wrote fluff for an out of the way Agri world, recently cut off from the rest of the Imperium by warp storms, called Vorten's Gem.

An Imperial Navy convoy, with its contingent of remnants of several Guard regiments was trapped there, so they settled on-planet. There was a saint's shrine in the ruins of it's only large city, guarded by a small Sisters order, an Arbites precinct, Eldar scouts were secretly searching the planet for a lost relic, a Genestealer Cult was slowly plotting to convert the dwindling human population and Dark Eldar irregularly raided the system . Also there was a Necron tomb on the moon of one of the gas giants in the system, and an Adeptus Mechanicus listening post on another. There might even have been something chaotic to be found elsewhere in the system.

This enabled me to give all of my (fledling) armies to have a background of my own making.

I just like world building I suppose. The entire idea of creating your own background world though, was published in White Dwarf back when Fat Bloke was still running the show. Now if only I could remember the issue number (because like heck I'm going to read thorugh hundreds of issues just to find this one little article... lol )

Please keep up your work; it's very inspirational. I abandoned 40K many years ago, but the setting has always held an attraction. And with the now available new Shadow Wars rule book, I can see myself revisiting this long forgotten project and revive it. If only because of the great example you've set! 8)

Just the same as i am doing. Great fun isn't it.
World building started for me after i bought Dungeons and Dragons in 1978. At that time there were very few modules and as i had very little money i could not afford them anyway, so i spent most my time creating worlds with loads of maps and background.

I have also used the "cut off from the rest of the Imperium by warp storms" trick for planet Torq XLII to keep things smaller and in control.

High time i revived this thread and i here proudly present the WIP on my Aviodanar, a birdlike race native to planet Torq XLII.
Decide to do some kitbashing with the little i have. Since i have only bought 2 things from games workshop in the last 20 years ( 1 box of kroot and 1 box of warcry chaotic beasts) it was not difficult to decide what to use.
I bought the warcry box for the furies that i need for my fantasy bronze age thread - https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=125281.0 - ,so i had the raptoryx left over. With their heads on kroot bodies i found something i liked straight away.
The robes are tissues soaked in paint and pva glue and the plumes are from some sort of vegatation from some deco shop.

A heated discussion between 2 aviodanar and an adventurer in Trader Town on the mining planet Torq XLII.

The Aviodanar from planet Torq XLII are a race that have evolved from birds. Although they are OK to get on with, other races avoid them as at first light of day just before the sun comes up, they still join in the dawn chorus just as their ancestors did and make such a bloody racket that it gets on everyone else's nerves.

The adventurer is from Hasslefree miniatures.

Agreed, most excellent conversions.

I am getting from them the vibe of the bird baddies from the Dark Crystal, but as of typing this I have no idea as to what they were called?

I love the fact that they are sinister to look at, but actually quite friendly, if noisy  ;) lol

Great thread.  Ditto on the Dark Crystal vibe (which is a good thing by the way!)

Lovely minis, great paintjobs, fantastic backdrops, brilliantly composed and the special effects don't overwhelm the models but add to them. A+ all round.

Thanks all for the compliments. Motivates me do do more.
Here is the WIP on the next 2 aviodanar. I cut the kroot bodies apart and glued them in new positions. Luckily i could cover all joints with the tissue paper (soaked in paint and pva glue) so clever greenstuff work was not necessary.

I absolutely love this. I wish actual 40K still had this kind of character and atmosphere, as opposed to the lifeless, generic dump it took a while back.  I cleared out most of my GW stuff other than the board games like Space Hulk and my custom Tru Scale Marines.

I also love old school 40K projects too. I just finished converting a Rogue Trader Dreadnought into a custom Robot for Blackstone Fortress a few months ago, as well as some plastic Squats I'd had lying around forever.

Wow those Aviodanar are very cool!  Will you have to buy another Chaotic Beasts box to get enough heads?  I wasn't familiar with that set and it seems skimpy on the number of spare parts you get (most of my familiarity with GW plastics is from 15 years ago).
