Title: Project log - modern era 20mm European theatre skirmish game
Post by: Mr Kissyfur on April 19, 2017, 09:41:15 AM
Hi there

So, after a bit of model stasis (I started painting up the Imperial Assault figures a few months ago, and stalled – got heartily sick of painting Stormtroopers) I decided to embark on a project this year. The kids have very much got into tanks recently (thank you World of Tanks and Bovington Tank Museum) so I decided to put together a small 20mm game for them. The premise is modern-ish, Russian vs US. Rivet counters need not apply – I am very much mixing eras of equipment in the interests of getting on with it. 

So, to start with, here are some Russian soldiers, painted and in need of basing. These are the first 20mm figures I’ve painted, and they’re fiddly little blighters. So they look a little rougher in the close up than they do to my eyes in real life, but hey ho, the camera never lies 

US soldiers on the go:

I have to say, Elhiem figures are superb.

Some armour put together and awaiting painting:

Iv’e got a few more vehicles to do, plus an A-10 and Mig-23 and an AH-64:

Started some flight bases – tried to get a bit of weight on the bottom with a big flat washer:

Buildings are primarily Faller type HO stuff, to get that West German look. I’ve got two more buildings to do, and the ones below need painting (obviously) and a couple still need their guttering.   You’ll also see my first attempt at scratch building a building – it was a garage type thing, but think it’s now more of a barn given the size! I was building it using the 20mm soldiers as a guide, but obviously that makes it look oversized compared to the HO buildings… doh. The cladding is made from coffee stirrers, which were cut in half lengthways to make them a bit more scale appropriate as planks. By gum that was time consuming. Roof is Wills sheet stuff.

The intention will be to have 4 2ftx2ft tiles, largely landscaped with fixed contours (no separate removable hills for me) and the buildings will be separately based – haven’t decided if they’ll fit into recesses in the base board (a la Captain Blood’s Quite a Big Terrain Project) or sit on top of flat areas.

Further updates as things progress…

Nice figures, at first I thought they were 28mm ^__^.

Very nice paint on the Russians! I have some Elheim 80's Soviets, lovely models. Test painted one, absolute pleasure to paint. A nice compromise between fiddly 15mm and the sheer amount of detail in 28mm, wish I would have started in 20mm sooner. Looking forward to more!

Goodness me, this has been dormant a while. In fairness, relocating to Singapore meant I didn’t get much further with it!

Despite the move, I managed to get a wriggle on with some stuff before shipping out in December, and have been painting away since...

I have some terrain boards that have been landscaped and glooped (6 square boards about 18 inches to a side, IIRC), and just need painting and tittivating. I’ll bang up some photos of those soon.

The miniatures all need properly basing still, and I’ll stick in a self-defence disclaimer that the sunlight was a bit bright so it doesn’t really show them off to their best advantage… I’ll try to work out a better way of photographing them… (and the US ones in particular could do with being a little closer...)

The US forces:

Some (completely inappropriately painted) airsupport:

The panel “lining” doesn’t look quite so stark in real life, honest. There is an A-10, Flogger, Apache and Hind waiting to be done…

Some buildings I’ve put together – these are mostly Faller I think. They all need the grounds doing, obviously! I was planning on doing these at the same time as the terrain boards.

An overview of the main house:

Some other buildings:
The pathway needs drybrushing to finish off on this one, as well as the grounds being painted/vegetated:

There’s another one that’s mostly built and primed I need to get on with as well, but no photos of that at the moment.  I’ve also got a couple more unbuilt but these four will take up enough space on the board for now.

Some vehicles:

Some random scatter terrain that needs basing:

That’s it so far – some AFVs to follow at some point…

I'm also working on a modern eastern European project and did not know about that line of HO buildings until I saw your post. Most of mine have been home made. You have done a beautiful job with them so far. Are the roofs removable or would it be difficult to make them so? I like being able to use the interiors of my buildings.

Hi there - I think you could do them with the roofs removable but I'll be having mine largely fixed, as they just become obstacles rather than internal cover.  Keeping it simple!

Some minor progress on the boards and vegetation:

Some little progress recently. I scratch built a skip (weirdly fun to do) for a building site (based on a Faller kit). The water in the tyre tracks looks a bit better in reality than it does in the photo – I think it caught the sunlight a bit strongly  It still needs the greenery adding to it:

I also decided to have a go at a crashed aircraft to use as a “capture the flag” objective. I had to hand a fairly rubbish old Airfix kit so decided to beat the living daylights out of it:

It was my first go with Mig pigments. The first application was using enamel thinner. It reacted badly with the Daler Rowney acrylic varnish and just left brown brushmarks everywhere. I managed to rub most of that off with more thinner, then tried again with Vallejo acrylic medium instead of thinner, which worked a bit better. Also then used some Mig enamel mud wash, and a Tamiya mud pen thing.

It still needs the grass/greenery applied, then it’s mostly done, I think…

Thank you all very much! It was a lot of fun - it was a massively terrible Airfix kit that really wasn't good for anything other than beating to death, so it was nice to salvage something from it.

Finished the base for it, plus the building site:

I tried to do some spent shells with very short lengths of copper wire but it didn't really work. I think the basil garnish really finishes it off, though.

I've been working on a similar project for the last year but concentrating on the vehicle vs. vehicle aspect since I am horrible at painting people.  :)

Thanks!

Next, I had a bit of a play around with some scrap bits to see how to make boxes. They ended up a little too large for 20mm scale, I think, but they just about work. The scratchbuilt LAWs help bring the scale back a bit, maybe?! This will be an ammo dump for the purposes of the rules (free full reload without using an action)

Then some concrete barriers – very quickly knocked together from some scrap Styrofoam:

A few updates!

I finished the last two boards, and the boys and I had a game – Second Born won by quite a margin – in the second photo his three soldiers and their Abrams are about to take out my last soldier…

I’ve also had a go at the Apache kit I had. Not a great kit, the Italeri one… My first go at proper oil washes and lining. I think it turned out ok. Also my first attempt at painting the canopy rather than leaving it clear. I think it ended up, at best, ok (and more than a little bit gangsta) – I will have a bit more practice before I have a go at the AH-6 I have.

I also scratch built some ammo and med pack markers. I quite like these.

I also made some stone walls - I finished scribing the first one, and then realised I had a bazillion more lines to scribe in if I wanted a set of them. I wept inside a little bit.

Also had a go at some chain link fencing – I need to tone down the rust a little bit, but for something knocked up out of toothpicks, the netting packaging from some potatoes and some scrap foamboard I think they did ok.

I also had a play at weathering something. I bought one of those “4d puzzle” model kits off ebay, of the S300. It’s actually a great kit for wargaming purposes – proper AFV modellers would, of course, weep at its inaccuracies.

And some random photos:

Next up will be the AH-6 and a couple of HMMVWs. I’ve also got a part build Hind I need to finish…

Wonderful work, and I really like your work on the canopy. I recently started doing the same, rather than also painting the insides of cabs on trucks and such.

Looks like you had a great and fun game! And I applaud your scratch-building, the markers do look nice.  :D ;)

Thank you all very much! It's keeping me sane - living in Singapore is lovely (on the whole) but I do miss being able to do stuff in the garden back in the UK - I enjoyed nothing more than building drystone walls. So now I'm trying to scratch the same itch but in 1/72 scale :)

Which reminds me - I was going to try to build a mossy ruined wall/woodland area from scratch, building the wall out of aquarium gravel piece by piece :)

What rules are you using ?

I am using a modified version of AKULA's BAD AR:SE rules, which make for very quick and fun games which can work with three opposing players, each running 4 soldiers. We have one of each class in each squad. I do need to get a third nationality of soldier from Elhiem to make it a bit easier to keep track of whose soldier is whose  :)

I am trying to find some decent, but very simple, rules to use for 1v1 using larger numbers of soldiers.

How about Fist full of lead ?
We’ve used them for all different periods, and they are quick and fun.
I’ve seen them used for modern on LAF

Do a Fistfull of Lead have rules for tanks and AFVs ? Do you think it will need much work to be used in Modern/Future wars setting  :?

Tbh they don’t have stats for armour, but they are bringing out their “big battles” version / adaptation to the rules in 6 weeks time, and from viewing BaronVanJ blog, I can see he is using steam tanks and metal walkers, so there use be something coming.

Some great modelling here, I like the scenery....but I particularly like how you’ve painted the cars!  Going to try and mimic it I think...

Keep it up.

Check out the unofficial Battlegroup Cold War rules at http://coldwarhot.blogspot.com/  A reinforced platoon or reduced mixed company size game fits comfortably on a 6'x4'.  You'll probably need a copy of the Battlegroup rules.

More updates!

I decided to build a stone wall from scratch, and that then escalated a bit:

Very nice. I didn't see this "1st time round" so have been looking back at it. The $6m question.... did you ever find a set of rules that you like?  My mates and I game "Cold "War"/Moderns in 6, 15 and 20mm. We plan to use either NORTHAG or "Unofficial Battlegroup" Cold War for big, "armour-heavy"  battles in 6mm. However despite having the rules we have been prevented from trying them due to Lockdown. We use "Seven Days to the River Rhine" with our 15mm stuff, and did manage two games of this over the Summer. Not bad at all.  That leaves us with the more tricky question of more "skirmish" games in 20mm.  Rules tend to vary from thick tomes such as "Spectre" down to Empress Miniatures' "Danger  Close" which I think is only about 4 pages. Again lack of opportunity for face-to-face gaming has knocked this one on the head for now.  Interested to hear where you have got to re choice of rules.

Thanks

Hi there,
Thanks for the kind words, all. I have bunch of updates to add when I can find time to photograph them all properly and then sort out my online hosting (my flickr account is almost full). In amongst the updates are some hay bales (poorly executed version of Luke Towan's tutorial), a barn find WW2 jeep and a barn for them to go in (among several other things).

SJWi - I haven't looked any further on the rules front. We relocated back to the UK last autumn and what little spare time I've had has been spent modelling (as it's therapeutic...)

A poor quality teaser photo for now:

I finally managed to sort out my Flikr account so I could upload a few more photos. So, I've been fiddling with a few things recently. Apologies for the size of the post... :P

First up, some HMMVWs (Revell - they seem more 1/76 than 1/72 to be honest):

A trailer (from the Airfix Jeep set):

Some barrels (Sgts Mess I think):

Haybales (the undercoat of yellow was waaaaay too yellow so it's fairly obvious where it shows through the jute bits - although to be fair it's more obvious on camera than in person)

Some Hornby telegraph poles - these were absolutely smooth so roughed them up with a hacksaw blade to get some texture:

A couple of ATVs from the always amazing Elhiem (incidentally, I ordered some new spec ops figures from them recently, and some backpacks and whatnot as stowage for the tanks, and they were a little bit delayed (due to Covid, so fair enough and not an issue) and as an apology they included an additional spec ops figure in the order - they are as amazing as the quality of their figures, and really great communication from them. Will continue buying from them and heartily recommend them to everyone)

Some scrappy barbed wire sections - made from Javis barbed wire, I think:

A barn for the barn find jeep and various bits to go in. This was scratch built from Wills corrugated roof and brick sheets, and some H beam from Plastruct. I learnt during this exercise that "oh, the nearest degree or two will be fine for the angles, I'll sort it with some sanding and filler" doesn't work.

Et voila. Next are the M2 and M1  - they're painted, just need filter, wash, weathering and stowage (so a fair bit, then).

Oh, my.   Such an inspiration for my current Northag / Zona Alfa project.  I'm really impressed with your attention to detail.

If you do not mind, I plan on. Stealing some of your ideas.  However, I'm sure mine will be lacking the finesse you have on yours.   I`m building in 15mm and maybe some 6mm.

Great job.  Looking forward to seeing more in the future.
