Ooh, German South West, nice.

By rights I believe the hatband should be the same colour as the tape lining the hat brims, but that is a seriously, seriously fussy quibble. They look grand.  :)

Some beautiful paint work there! Most impressive. Always wanted to East Africa but 28mm is just too hard for me to paint.

Very well done - these look great. Your subtle palette and blending suit them well!

That's interesting, hadn't come across that info before. I know Pre-1896 the hatbands on the field caps were blue in German East Africa, but I didn't know that after the introduction of the new uniforms at that date the new Südwester hats there had anything but white bands and edging. The official scheme for Schutruppe hats (hatbands and edging) after 1896 was colour-coded by colony: Blue for German Southwest Africa, red for Cameroon and white for German East. The uniform piping was blue for all three.

But wherever they are headed, they look splendid. :)

Thanks for the nod, Plynkes! These have now been repainted. :)

Are mine correct for DOA then?

They are indeed. The Südwester hat was for some reason not as popular in East Africa as in SW, and sun helmets were more commonly worn on campaign, but your fellows' hats follow the regulations perfectly. They look splendid. :)

And Lettow-Vorbeck famously wore one, just as he does in your pic. I have that figure somewhere (luckily it was the free figure the one time I went to the Tactica). Really must get around to painting him one of these days.

I was rather surprised to find out that the uniform could be corduroy...
Looking at this picture you can see there is corduroy softness to the material...
I can't imagine it was easy to get a good military crease in it...

All the best.  Aly
