VSF Soundtracks?
« on: May 09, 2017, 10:19:27 AM »
Not sure if this is the right place, so moderators, feel free to move this if the content is deemed too off-topic.

As my gaming is leaning more towards all things Space:1889 at the moment, I'm looking for nicely immersive music to play as a backdrop. Soundtracks, period music, Steampunk-inspired tunes, whatever you can think of, I'd be grateful for any pointers.

There's a genre of music called 'Electro Swing' if you want something a bit more modern sounding. Might fit for steampunk settings. There's a particular track I like called 'Buffoon'-

'Rag March' from 'Return to Oz' is also pretty good-

Maybe check out https://bandcamp.com/tag/steampunk

Tends to more rock-oriented stuff than is suitable for background music I suppose but you might get lucky. Also worth checking out the tag "neoclassical".

Plynkes nailed it. It has to be Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. ;D

Disregarding the SP word which you young people need no advice from an old f*** like myself, you've got loads of "tunes" to play with. Depending what mood your in you have the classics for dramatic arrivals  of elite forces or "cloadships" i.e. Sibelius,Wagner etc all free if you hunt them online. It all depends what your looking for dear boy to enhance your games.

Not a fan myself, but Abney Park? Professor Elemental?

However, battles across the sky? One of the few appropriate uses of Wagner.

Thank you Gentlemen, particularly for Jeff Wayne's take on Wells. I'd never heard of that before, and am just listening to the version narrated by Curd Juergens, rolling sanity checks as I go.  o_o

The electro swing is nice to listen to, I find, but a bit too intrusive as backdrop. Might do nicely for bar scenes, though.

As for the classics: I think that's the most promising avenue. Alas, I'm a compleat cretin for anything that isn't Bach, so i guess I'll browse around a bit. Dickie Wagner brings back fond memories of the first ever Space:1889 game I GMed. The PCs were cautiously pursuing the dastardly enemy, I popped on the Ride of the Valkiries, and all of a sudden they went berserk, going hell-for-leather and never mind barrage. Good fun.

love a bit of electro swing myself. Other than that, classical would go well I would have thought.

Not sure there's an appropriate section, but did have in mind the relatively quiet and stately Valhalla leitmotif, as the players' flyer peacefully transits,  only to be overwhelmed by the Ride, as the Red Captain pirate appears ahead, and the High Martians dive from above. Glorious.  :D

I tend towards electroswing (Parov Stelar, Club Des Belugas, Caravan Palace) but I like to mix in a good number of late 1800's classical (Wagner, Mendellsohn, Offenbach) and then tie in soundtracks from colonial and western era movies (Zulu, anything by Ennio Morricione).

The mix makes my wife crazy.

Also note, Morricone scored Bruce Lee's Way of the Dragon!

For original period stuff -- assuming it really is ca. 1889:
