Well, his troops declared him Imperator more than once, but technically, the highest office old Gaius achieved was dictator perpetuus. Of course, this practically was imperial power in all but name, but it didnīt make him "emperor" in the sense of princeps as created by Augustus and exacted by his successors.

I -hate- it when people call Julius Caesar an "Emperor". I just saw it the other night somewhere, too... When I was teaching, I actually rejected a textbook because of that same error.

But seriously, yeah, annoys me. And Warlord should know better.

We spotted one that was worse - JC conquered Britain in 55 AD.

"Emperor" is an English word. The Romans had no equivalent single title that carried the same meaning, rather the men we refer to as the Emperors carried a host of different titles. In that sense, there were no Roman Emperors at all.

We get our word Emperor from Imperator, a title that Caesar did hold. But it didn't mean what our word does. One of the most commonly used titles for the Emperors was Princeps, which is to say the first citizen, a bit of old republican window dressing to help distract from the fact that the Romans were now living under a monarchy. It certainly does not mean Emperor in the sense we understand it. Another honorific title much used was the name Caesar itself!

So it seems to me a little odd to get all fired up about the supposed misuse of a term that we've imposed on their system ourselves. We may as well be arguing whether an ant ruler is a Queen, Empress, Prime Minister or Mayoress.

Caesar is actually the word that transformed into German 'Kaiser' , Danish 'Kejser', and Russian 'Czar' - because of the way it was actually pronounced in medieval Latin.

I've actually always wondered how 'Emperor', 'Empereur', etc. in most Latin-languaged countries (+ Britain) came to mean 'ruler of an empire', as Imperator was just an honorary title bestowed on C-in-C by his own men....
