Just got Death in the Dark Continent, and that looks like a very promising set of rules. I'll be trying them out for Zulu Wars games, but they would also work well for the Sudan, I think.

Patrols in the Sudan by Peter Pig. Has also 15mm miniatures for it.

I was also going to mention these. Would easily scale up to 28mm
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

2019 Painting Challenge :
figures bought: 500+
figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

I'm planning on using Patrols in the Sudan. They have a lot of interesting concepts including the Mahdist player being able to manipulate the scenery.  Although written primarily for 15 mm figs it has a play sheet included with all distances (movement, ranges etc.) scaled up 1.5 times for 28mm figs.

I don't know whether it's still in print, but you might want to hunt down Science vs Pluck Or Too Much for the Mahdi, by Howard Whitehouse, published by the Virtual Armchair General. As the title suggests, it is a dedicated set for the Sudan.  I have the original edition, but it reached a fourth. It's distinct from other sets, being designed as a multi-player game, with all players acting as British officers, and the Mahdists controlled by an umpire, but should provide inspiration even if your circumstances make it impractical to play.

Can't seem to see it on the TVAG site, so I guess not. The most recent edition was, as far as I'm aware, in 2010. That's the copy I have. So you might well be able to source a nearly-new one somewhere.

Indeed, though it's currently not in stock at Noble Knight, who would seem the most likely source.

P.S. I meant 'hunt down', of course (now amended).

Time - grand idea... duly nicked

I'm glad you like it! I've also toyed with the notion of lightly airbrushing some teased out kapok to represent more distant formations disturbing the dust. Anything to cut down the number of figures needed.

When units go to ground and back onto blinds they generate two blinds, one real and the other a dummy.

A good idea too.. hmm might have to see what can be done there

TVAG handed back SvP to the author, Howard Whitehouse. It's still available via Wargames Vault

http://www.wargamevault.com/product/142718/Science-Vs-Pluck-3rd-ed

The first edition is still available for free at

http://www.tinywars.com/download-page

Well worth getting for some good ideas and background information, though it's a very different game compared to most - a mix of role playing and structured kriegspiel.

While in the subject, TVAG's 2 volume Sudan Sourcebooks are essential reading.

Just to add to the plethora of rules already mentioned I'd also throw in to the pot "A Good Dusting" which are my rules of choice for the conflict..  http://www.caliverbooks.com/bookview.php?id=17728
