What color is your Martian foliage?
« on: May 30, 2017, 01:59:04 AM »
I'm going to need to do some basing soon for my 6mm Martian Empires / Space 1889 battles. I'm using a terra cotta color for the red earth itself. Not sure how to go with foliage/grass. More arid yellows? A non-earth like mix of colors? Go cray cray with purples and blues?

What do you do? Pics please!

What color should Martian soil be?

I tried to find NASA images and that was a disaster (of unattributed pix, looney tunes finding 'hidden' fossils, color filters ad nauseum, conspiracies of all sorts!)

I just wanted to know what color of table cloth to go for...

I've only built one of these for now but I went with a tan/slightly green look. For bases (28mm figures) just dry looking tufts seem to fit the bill.

I also went for some standard trees with red foliage.

From what photos I have seen, the ground appears tan/earth, similar to North-West Frontier. I did not see that it was red, though it is called "the red planet". I went with the same NWF drop cloth, and then scatter just a hint of red sand. Works!

With regard to foliage, I go with non-green types; orange, yellow, etc., and maybe add one very yellow-green type. Again, stick to NWF, and add to that for weird foliage, and I think you will be fine. I use Space 1889 canon.

That said, if your games are around the canals, then you would have more foliage, and you can mix in greens.

I used varying shades of red turning to purple as it nears the canals
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.
