Randomized names of the Old West (and more...soon!)
« on: May 30, 2017, 06:37:30 PM »
I'm adding a small Telegraph Office section to SnS' blog.  While a lot of folks here may not play SnS, I figure some of this may be of use.  I'll be updating it as ideas develop.  The first two telegrams are random name tables for Old West characters.  Information taken from the office of the census, and various historical elements.  I know I love randomized tables to assist in character creation, so take a look if that's you!

Hope to add random town name generators, maybe randomized encounters/scenarios, and a number of SnS-dedicated materials.

Thanks, just having fun.  I know there are tons of apps and randomized generators out there, but sometimes it's fun to just roll some dice - and this list can even just serve to let you name your own stuff on purpose.  And who doesn't like "Split Hole" as a town name?  lol

I'm sure this will get some mileage from my friends for games of Desperado... even if I steal some of the choicer combinations without the involvement of dice (like Split Hole...  :D ).

The real question is Split Hole after Scarlet Hole or before it?  lol

The New Mexico and Colorado parts would be more appropriate with some Spanish-language names and towns too.

Some new Mexican name tables.  Couldn't find good census/listings of names from the 1800's so some of these are probably more modern than the previous ones listed.

I can look for census records if you need them.  Those names are good townsfolk, peons, and land grant settlers.  For a town alcalde or the leading family, a good name would be Romero, C. de Baca, or Montoya.

Yep, and therein lies the difficulty with "Mexican" names which are heavily diverse from the richer white Spaniards to the lower class Mexican indians and the giant mix between.  There's a whole culture worth of Mexican indian names which are completely foreign, etc.  When I was in the BP we used to apprehend Mexican indians who today, speak native languages and no Spanish, etc.

These telegrams are an extremely useful, great resource. Should help my gaming group name their gangs fittingly. Thanks for sharing.
