I recently picked up some GW Arcane Ruins with the idea of making use of them for OGAM, Strange Aeons and other fantasy settings (although they could be used pretty much anywhere).

They needed a fair amount of work with green stuff before they could be used as all of the joins on them were awful and really obvious (why did they not design them to join at the edges is beyond me....  ::)).

I also got hold of some of the leaves from the GW Woods as I wanted to see if an idea to add them to the ruins would work.

(The Stormcast in the picture belong to a friend as they needed a fair bit of remedial work as there were gaps in some very prominent places, particularly on the shoulder armour and a whole section of leg was missing too! I figured that they could quite easily be done at the same time).

Anyway, once the repairs were done the ruins were placed on top of some cut up pizza base inscribed with 'paving' and on to an MDF base. Then the leaf sections were added....

A coating of paint mixed with PVA bond was slapped all over them to help seal them and hold them together, followed by a lot of drybrushing and a few washes for colour and definition.
Sand, static grass and a few tufts were then added to the base and they were done.

Green stuff work aside, they were pretty quick and easy, and should prove pretty versatile for a lot of different games so I am happy with them.

And the added bonus is we are going to use them in our next game of OGAM where units will be able to use them to 'teleport' between them on the battlefield, but that is another story.....
 ;)

Those are fantastic - I've been eyeing that kit for ages for some desert fantasy skirmish stuff (that I now want to try in 28mm, and should double up for sci-fi too) - even with the worth you think they're worth it?

At eighteen quid for a set and you can make quite a few scenic pieces from them, I reckon they are great.
I still has has the needle/obilisk to make and the set also comes with a base piece , which I would have found useful but I do not have this section, so I think that they are a winner.
To be honest, i think that the scenery kits are the best thing that GW do, value-wise, and have a fair few bits of it.
The removal of skulls is sometimes necessary, but the kits are worth a little effort, in my opinion.

Thanks, Tarkers!

Cheers, mate.
I have been looking at your 7th Voyage thread for inspiration for working on the needle/obelisk  thingy when I get around to it.

Work has begun on Hades and the Norns (....at last!)...

This shot was taken before I got to it this afternoon.
I hope to finish these in the next day or two as they are slowly coming together.

Well, it has been a while since a proper addition to the project, but here is Hades, Lord of the Underworld.....

I went for a really 'dark' colour scheme for the figure itself, befitting his nature, whilst keeping the base matching the rest of the Greek faction, which made it an absolute bugger to take a decent picture of, so this will have to do. He does look better to the naked eye but I cannot get anything better than this at the moment.

Hades takes the Greeks up to three Gods, which will do for now as the Norse do not have any yet, so it will be their turn for a while.

Great work on the god  of the land where the sun never shine  o_o o_o
Dark color is difficult to paint...
May be with blue highlights on the face you can give him more "life"  in the face  lol
But for me, you have a perfect Hades !

Thank you, Eric.
 :)

As for his 'face': There really is not much flesh visible to do anything with as it is mainly armour and beard.
Take a look at the artwork for the original donor figure....

Wow, how did I miss this thread.  Beautiful.

I am totally stealing the flat GW leaves on top of a building or stonework idea, Brilliant!

Thank you, sir.
 :)

Those leaves are pretty useful and I have a few more to add to another scenery piece when I get the time.
 ;)

Nice work  :)

Thanks, Tarkers.
 :)

I now have the Norns finished, and as I have three Gods for the Greeks now done it is time for the Norse to get some Godlike reinforcements, beginning with Freya or Loki.
I shall post a piccie of the Norns later once the 'snow' has dried......
