The Fool of Owari (now with old bones)
« on: June 19, 2017, 01:10:35 AM »
Hi guys!

I will post a few pictures of our project here. I hope you like it.

Thanks to the excellent post of Juxt I was motivated to take a few pictures and start a small Yokai War (which I already lost because of my lack of comparable painting and modelling skills, but it is a great inspiration to see others working on similar settings).

We are aiming for a mixed campaign: Ronin for small engagements, Dragon Rampant for larger skirmishes. The setting will be shortly after Nagashino, but with strong mythical / fantasy elements (borrowing from games like Nioh or Samurai Warriors).

First off there is the classic Ronin buntai:

I never take settings too seriously, so yes, the green guy is the "Cat Samurai" (google it, it is hilarious).

Then, enter the main man, Nobunaga. Here are my first Ashigaru for larger engagements:

Pictures of yokai will follow.

Cheers,

Peter

Great looking gang of masterless troubleseekers. Super paint work with a touch of whimsy, my favourite. The ashigaru look nicely cohesive too.

Lovely  :)

I like the fact that you've taken the mdf buildings to the level that they should be at.

cheers

The mons are made by "Battle Flags":

I like them because they are thin and soft, so easy to work with.

OK, I checked the Battle Flag site. I can only see black and white Oda Mons. How did you get yellow Mon on the hats? did you paint yellow under the Mon?

Actually yes, the transfers for the jingasa are negative, that means they have a black outline und a transparent mon. If you plan to paint the jingasa in a different colour than black it would not look great. (Apart from that, you should have a fine scissor or scalpel knife at hand, because they are not shaped)

I thought at first that this is rather useless, but then I cherished it, because I was able to paint them in shiny gold ;)

Hi James!

I do like MDF, first of all because I have very limited storage space and they are very lightweight. If you add a little "love" they do make an interesting table. For example this (very cheap) Hokora from TT Combat - add some green stuff and paint and they are really lovely.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks for posting, ordinarily I am not a fan of MDF, but as James said you have improved them enormously, you've made a very good job of the thatch, mainly it just looks like untidy teddy bear fur, but yours looks like thatch.
Look forward to seeing more of your terrain.

This is going to be awesome!

I love what I'm seeing so far, your scenery is brilliant- and as everyone else is saying, I'm not a fan of MDF kits at all, but you've made them look fantastic, that last hokora especially.

Now, bring on the yokai!

I have an older picture showing the thatch better:

It is done without much effort. The basic PVA / water treatment is not so consistent, but I don't mind. I just took a scissor and cut away the fuzzy parts (I don't know why people don't do that). Then some diluted black wash, drybrush with light greyish colour and done.

The applied moss is the final touch that makes it "pop".

So, enter the first yokai:

The Oni Brothers (and Kojiro the Sake-Taster)

I bought them at a time when there were not many Oni miniatures around. Back then conversions were beyond me, now I think I could at least add horns.
Those are regular Reaper ogres, but they always had an Asian touch in my opinion.

We tried the oni rules of the Ronin mythical supplement and they feel quite satisfying (especially when you are the one who is able to take one down).

Cheers,

Peter
