28 mm Koi carp
« on: June 19, 2017, 08:20:09 AM »
I'm planning on making a little japanese garden in a short while.
I'm planning liitle temple, a stone garden and, offcourse, some water containing koi carps.

Does anyone know how to get the latter kinda cheaply in the right scale?
They don't have to be great. I don't mind working on them a bit.

thanks.

To be honest you'd probably be best off making your own. They will be so small and when painted in the various colours you probably wouldn't be able to tell what the original was.

I've got some in a pond at the back of one of my buildings but I painted them on.

I found some (although I never ordered from this shop):

Although they seem to be not too small (so the pond needs depth ;)

An alternative to James idea is to either photo or get photos from the net from above and prind and paste them down in your pond and varnish or whatever water medium you are going to use over the top.
I took my photos in the Japanese garden in Holland park when I was last in London, haven't had time to actually do this so can't show any results but the ones James painted were very effective.
Post your results as I would like to see what you achieve.
Cheers

Thanks for the tips.
I think I might try to make the myself. It sounds like a nice challenge.

Allthough that webshop has some nice stuff.

I'll consider my options, it'll be a good month before I'll be able to get any good hobby time in anyway.

For Koi, the best option is to just use a blob of a bright orange paint in the basic shape of the fish and then work in a little bit of white speckling  before hitting them with a layer of gloss, then do whatever you want with water. You can even use the paint ontop of a thin layer of resin and it still works rather well.

Ciao,
I did mine, using a "dead" fishes from Mirliton range, there are a couple of cranes too.
I'm sorry I dont' have any close-up of the pond, just this one, look upper left near the temple entrance.

I used a lot of this: http://www.mirliton.it/index.php?cName=medieval-accessories (scroll down) there are a lot of useful animal: chikens, rams, pigs, ducks, peacocks, etc...
Fishes here: http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=game-fishes&cName=medieval-accessories
That set is used to dress the medieval tables with food, but once painted they are ok. I just bended a little the fishes to give them a "live-swimming" look

Just wanted to say that's a lovely looking table set-up.

Must really enhance the playing experience.

That is indeed a lovely table.

The site you gave has some interesting stuff as well and at a reasonable price.
Though I haven't checked shipping yet.

I need to start drawing some plans, to se what I will actually need.

Slop some cheap acrylic paint (Apple Barrel) on some saran wrap.  About 1/16" thick.

Let dry.  Peel off.  Cut tiny fish shapes with scissors.  You can squish the tail with your fingers, and trim.

Easy peezy.
