Ogre gaming last Sunday.  I prefer playing this with the hex map instead of miniatures' terrain for speed of play and miniatures instead of counters for instant identification of all units.

Main Green columns are getting into position just beyond the Blue Howitzer's threat umbrella; when the LGEV recon screen discovers the location of two previously hidden Mk.I Ogres, then the columns advance in force to close the net.

Afraid not, I always mean to but then I get so engrossed in the game I forget. It's Romarks collection and he has a thread running in the Big Battalion part of the forum 👍

I love seeing all the pretty historicals games...but sweet pickled peanuts I am immediately taken out of my reverie by the paper "unit description" cards.  I see them in use constantly and while useful..I can't believe someone hasn't figured out a way around it.  Absolutely spoils the look of these beautiful and thematic games for me.

Cheers.  Yes, it's a sticky issue, but it's either that or have the players constantly scrabbling about for their orbats and trying to identify uniforms (which 9 times out of 10 won't be specific to the historical battle being played), or turning troop-stands over to read the label under the base, trying to work out who they are, what they are, who they belong to, what the starting strength was... etc, etc...

It's my scenario and they're my armies, so I can remember most of that stuff, but nobody else playing the game can (especially not the players who are new to the period).

The labels ideally also need to be clear enough to be read from a couple of feet away.  I do print mine on green card though, to tone them down a bit.  In reality they're not that obvious on the table, but they are easily picked out in photos.

Identification is always difficult, especially if it is not your usual period or your eyesight is not the best.

Photographs of units on off table cards might help, but it all depends on the number of stands, units etc.

I'm sure someone is thinking of microchipping their miniatures and using scanners to identify units. Or using the "where is my unit?" app that pings the unit you're looking for when you type their name in the search bar.

Use a VR headset to identify the stands...
