Last week we had our annual get-together weekend. It tends to be mostly about boardgames, this time including but not limited to Flamme Rouge, Camel Up, Brass: Birmingham, Britannia, Bloodborne, Condottieri, Dune, Detective, Awkward Guests, Cosmic Encounter, Undaunted: Normandy, 1565: St. Elmo's Pay and Death May Die.

To get some mini action too, we brought gladiators and played Sons of Mars:

I had a vague plan of running one of the full festival day programmes, but due to unfortunate last minute emergencies just before the weekend, I had no time to polish that plan into anything coherent. Therefore it was scaled down to a few single matches to recollect and to teach the rules. We had (too) many games to play anyway. Maybe next time with a better plan? Nice game, though, especially if the editor puts some effort into the scenarios to keep the matches interesting and entertaining, just like in real life. :)

I finally succumbed to temptation and bought Gloomhaven. Milady and I played the first scenario last night. We enjoyed it very much and actually won through, but only just!

Gloomhaven is like...Descent for pro-gamers?  My friends bought it and we've been so intimidated we never actually tried it.  There is a LOTTTTTT of crunch just from perusing the rulebook.  A weird aesthetic, but it's hugely popular on Board Game Geek, etc.

It is like Descent (which we played the other day) but in Gloomhaven the monsters are run by the game's AI. Therefore every player is in the same party working together. The rulebook is rather daunting but I read through it twice and watched this video on YouTube: Gloomhaven - How to Play and we managed to get going fairly easily after that.

It is a massive campaign with 95 scenarios, basically an RPG board game, slaying monsters in dungeons and collecting gold and experience points. No dice but a hand of cards which slowly depletes, adding a time-element to clearing a scenario. So far, it has lived up to its reputation as a great game.

The link above goes through the rules of the game but there is a good review here by the Shut Up and Sit Down team: SU&SD Gloomhaven Review

Yeah, the only big negative I've seen people harp on is the time limit card system, but I don't know the game enough to know if that's easily fixed/replaced, etc.  Beyond that it must be doing something right :D  My buddies literally bought it because they just went on BGG and picked the top handful of games.

Recently played a couple more games of Dragon Rampant with 32 point armies.

First was the 'Pot Boiler' scenario as my Egyptians fended off Dwarves attempting to rescue their kin before I sacrificed them to my own dark gods. First use of magicians as defender my sorceress was pretty effective on her throne as she could zap and transfix enemy units as they approached.

The second games was a foray into the 'Valley of Certain Death'. Lousy dice rolls were the theme for this game as both the Egyptians and Dwarves lost momentum at key times. The Dwarfs manged to get one pristine unit across the table early on and it escaped through the portal (scenario objective) for full points. It's absence was felt later in the game as the Sebeki managed to overrun the dwarfs after using a combination of archers, the wizardling and elite infantry with effective enchanted weapons to take down the Dwarven big beastie early on in the game.

A fun couple of games and the ruels again worked well. Magic on the battlefield seems 'fair enough' as it is always something of a gamble and can vary from being highly effective to utterly ineffective.
