Question about Gloire...
« on: February 14, 2007, 11:32:50 PM »
Pete, Richard, et al...

I currently have the Eureka 40mm Musketeer figs and was thinking of using them for Gloire.  That or dumping them and buying Brigade Games' or Redoubts' and doing it in 28mm.

Then I saw the 40mm Robin Hood figs from Trident and they are gorgeous.  So now I am considering keeping the 40mm Eureka stuff and buying the 40mm Robin Hood stuff as well.

So my question is, would Gloire adapt well to Robin Hood era scenarios and game play?

Thanks,

Patrick

Yes, it would work great, in my humble and totally impartial opinion.

The only problem is that Quarterstaves aren't in the rules, but I'd say use something like the Spear stats, and you'd be fine.

And one of the playtesters is also currently working on modding Gloire for Robin Hood style adventures.

Now if only we could get that samurai mod that a certain someone claims was the inspiration for Gloire, all would be well...

I'm sorry. You must have mistaken the author for one of those efficient Germans.

If Pete was as efficient at writing as they are at painting, I'd have covered the Dark Ages through the American Revolution by now.

It really depends on what you mean by "adapt well". You'd have to do some heavy "modding" to make it work.  There are no rules for Long Bows (or short bows for that matter), shields, or armor of any kind.    Armor points can be added to each body part, but there are no rules to penalize the character's speed or actions that should be incurred with "mail" or heavier armor.  There *are* archetypes in the rules that would fit a "Robin Hood" type character, but none that would fit a mounted knight or well equiped medieval "man-at-arms".  That's not to say that you *can't* "mod" the system.  I've done it many times to suit characters in the ".45A" set, but it's going to require some work on your part.  Doing a scenario where Robin's band fights the Sheriff's Men can't really be done right out of the box.

Thanks Shadow...

I just got the rules yesterday and have set to reading them.  I will see what I can figure out.

I did get a little read earlier and there is information for bows in there.  Just not a distinction between long and short, which I think would be easily fixed by minor modifications.

I will read more tonight and see what I think...

Right.  Sorry.  There's no rules for the *differences* in bows.  And you're right.  Those differences wouldn't matter much in a skirmish game anyway.
