Mutton Chop WWI vs Great War Miniatures
« on: July 13, 2017, 08:30:31 PM »
Hi,

I want to start a little WWI Project I recently stumbled upon the WWI range from mutton chop miniatures, sculpted by Paul Hicks and distributed by empress miniatures. After further research I found the Great War miniatures which seem to be the best WWI miniatures on the market according to many opinions on different forums. However I haven't found any comparisons between Mutton Chop and Great war.

I am a bit sceptic about the Mutton Chops being fragile (having had a really bad experience with the Ebor late romans also sculpted by Hicks and where the thin legs just bent and broke during clean-up). Does anybody have them? How is the material they are cast in? What are your preferences between those two manufacturers?

Thanks a lot!

The Mutton Chops are my figures of choice, especially for early war British. They have strong ankles and the castings are very clean and need minimal cleaning up. They can also be added to with the early WW1 British range from Footsore Miniatures that are also sculpted by Paul Hicks. The figures from GWM are also splendid figures. Slightly larger than Mutton Chops but need careful cleaning up.

I have the Mutton Chop and am very pleased with them. I don't recall any problems in cleaning them up; also don't recall any breakages during prep or in use.
My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2024 = 32
(2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

I have bought numerous Paul Hicks products and while I recall bayonets and the like being bent, I have never had a breakage in transit or during cleaning, and certainly have never had any bent or broken ankles on minis, and this is with the majority of my Hicks stuff bought through Empress.

I have recently ordered some Mutton Chop EW Brits. I do like GWM, Footsore and Renegade so it was a hard choice but I noticed only MC did them with fixed bayonets which I think look good. I hope this is historically correct. The GWM LW Brits mostly all have fixed bayonets so I assume so unless this was a later practice?
