I wanted some ruined fantasy city terrain.  Its a staple trope, ruins are practical and atmospheric for gaming with and ruins can be mixed with my existing graveyard terrain and jungle terrain sets easily.

It has to be a project that has a beginning, a middle and an end.  I didnt want to scratch build really, I wanted nice gaming pieces that look decent in photos.  The more that I thought about it, the more that I realised that I wanted the terrain to look obviously fantasy, not just historical with bells and whistles.

Bells and whistles that generate lightning and power chords are acceptable however.

A list of appropriate kits was made.  Over time they were purchased, two months ago they were assembled and they were painted over the last month or so.

The first step was to prep and paint some fairly vanilla pieces, to pad out the table.  Landmarks could come later.

My first stop was the Citadel Ruins of Osgilliath terrain, which is pleasingly generic.  I also picked up the Citadel Goblin Town set to use as gangways to connect the various buildings on more than one level, simply because I though that would be fun.  I also picked up a set of Renedra fences to use as ladders.

I assembled the lot and painted it with simple drybrushing and zenith spraying techniques.

The blog post with some more info is HERE for anyone that fancies it.

More Exactamundo terrain next week with a bit of luck.  Thanks for looking!

They look lovely, and the fences as ladders idea is just great - I forsee a surge in orders from Renedra as result!

Speaking of which, have you seen that Renedra do some small "scatter" ruins and some nice gothic-looking walls with spiked railings in them? I reckon they'd fit in rather nicely with your new Exactamundo terrain. :D

I've got weird internet here at the moment, so to echo what I may or may not have just said over on your blog - lovely idea! It might be a common trope but it's never doing to get tired and the use of the goblin terrain is brill. Cracking.

I dont think that I came up with that idea myself.  Im sure that I saw it somewhere else, but science knows where.

It does work rather well though.  I painted the lot on the sprue (along with the Goblin Town elements) which made them a straightforward way to get a lot done.  My wooden ladder needs are covered for the forseeable future I think :)

Thanks for the encouragement gents :)

The Renedra ruins are very nice.  I would like to add them at some point, but for now I'm content to finish off all of the fantasy ruins that I have before I invest in more.  Having a "finished" project is unheard of in my house, so Im going to bask in that for a while before I pick up any more.

Thanks Jagganath.

Using the Goblin Town pieces to make a second elevation level has a lot of appeal to me for gaming reasons.  Im not sure why, but it feels like a boon to cinematic side of those games, and therefore well worth doing.

Nice work, mate.
I really like them.
 :-* :-*

I have some Goblin Town stuff in a box somewhere that was supposed to do the same job.
Not having played with the scenery in a Mordheim-y way for some time (years!) put paid to that idea and they are languishing in the loft somewhere. Thanks for reminding me, I shall have to dig for them next time I go up there as I now have a new use for them....

That is an excellent set up and a well-executed project. Simple yet effective. I'd steal it in a heartbeat had I any more room on my terrain shelves.

With anyone but you that would simply be idle chit chat DTV... :D

Lovely painting  :)

Thanks James!

I painted the Goblin Town elements and the "ladders" on the sprue with quick spray/wash/drybrush techniques.  It was pretty rapid.  You chould be able to rattle it out pretty fast.

Thanks.

Yeah.  Even though I am lucky enough to have quite a decent sized, dedicated mancave, terrain storage is certainly becoming a thing.

Terrain is too important for gaming to skimp on though.

I like the Age of Sigmar ruined terrain pieces that were released at the games inception.  This one is probably my joint favourite along with the Realmgates.

I painted it in exactly the same manner as I painted the Osgilliath ruins shown earlier, to tie them in a bit.  The Occulum is significantly more ostentatious though, and so is the first landmark or civil/religious building ruin in the set.

Brilliant! What a gem. I didn't even know it.

It needs an astrologer in deep thought.

Or a Lawnmower Man perhaps ;D

The next ruined piece of architectural arcana to get Exactamundan planning permission is this Dreadfire Portal from the Warhammer Storm of Magic releases a few years ago.

At the time I wasn't keen on those Arcane Fulcrums at all, but in the interim my appetite for the ridiculous seems to have increased, as I recently decided that I think that they are brilliant.
Midlife crisis manifests in myriad ways.

I give it a rating of eleven Tufnels.

 lol

A royal cosmopolitan cocktail of a scenery piece!

Ridiculous or not, I think you're building quite an impressive mortal realm.  So far you've got a very vibrant death like Nagash purple ambience to it all.

I wonder if my khorne banana boat should be anchored at castle Greyskull... as I recall the whole thing is more or less just a skull gate.

Keep the cocktails coming!
