Beam Engine
« on: March 24, 2009, 10:26:39 PM »
Latest arrival on the pile of things to do (birthday time again) is the Airfix beam engine kit.
Notionally 1/32 but it should be fine for a 28mm pump house, it looks to be about 7½ inches long and 6 inches high, but I'll try and see if I can get it built soon and post a pic with figures for scale.

They also do an 1804 Trevithick steam loco......

Yeah, I've been eyeing these for a while. They look like they'd go into terrain quite well.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Good find, thanks for the heads up.

Basic parts out of the box (with a Foundry Darkest Africa figure for scale):

Work progressing.
The kit is designed as a working model, but I found it difficult not to glue some of the parts that are supposed to move, so gave up and glued it as a static.

The instructions aren't entirely clear on some stages either.

That round chamber on the right hand side isn't a brilliant fit, but I didn't really find how bad a fit until I got to the final stage.

Time for tea and cake. Industrial portions preferred.

End view of the work in progress

Sadly heavy mould line on that upright piece, but I'm hoping it won't detract too much when painted up. After all, cast iron has some mould lines.

Top section added :

On reflection it would be easier to partially build this assembly before adding it.

Done !

But there are quite a few left over bits (on the right) ....

The spare parts are (apart from the crank handle which I deliberately left off) a mystery, they don't seem to appear on the plans at all, but it might just be my eyesight.

Rear view :

The control wheel is large for 28mm, but I decided to leave it in anyway.

All I have to do now is paint it in a good glossy colour....

Great model - I saw it on the Airfix Website and thought it was a strange one for them to be selling in such a reduced range, but its great for VSF

That's what we hope, also a good objective.

We have a load of resin sewer sections (Ainsty) and thought it could be a good scenario for action beneath the streets of London/Manhattan/Berlin/etc (choose your favourite and apply fiendish conspirators as required).

Wreck the pumping mechanism before the high tide to flood the city or take over the machanism to flood the city with poison/mutants/etc
