A Long-Overdue Project - Shoggoths (17Aug2017)
« on: July 18, 2017, 03:19:04 AM »
I pledged for the 2nd Edition Kickstarter, but by the time the miniatures arrived I'd already been drawn into a different project.  So, everything has languished in boxes under my gaming table for far too long.  I've finally reached a point where I have to work through the projects I have stocked up, rather than starting brand new ones, so my Strange Aeons collection might finally see the light of day.  I've been painting miniatures off and on for almost 20 years, but typically either fantasy or science fiction ranges.  This will be my first "modern" set.

The Eternal Golden Braid

I've started with the Cultist miniatures.  They're fairly uniform in color scheme and relatively low in detail, being covered in robes and hoods, so they're ideal for cutting my teeth before attempting more-complicated models.  My technique is extremely basic - base coats, some fine details, and a dark wash to blend everything together.

I'm not yet sure what kind of board(s) I might eventually make, so I split the difference and based half as in the city and half as in the country.  I made the two groups relatively equal in composition:  Three basic grunts, two ranged specialists, one melee specialist, a Damned Soul, and a leader.  I'll likely follow suit with the other groups.

Inside of the book- awesome backdrop idea.

2- the high priestess looks great with the cult, I am now beset by regret for not purchasing.

3- nice static grass

Thank you!  I cheat a bit by using Army Painter's Battlefield XP tufts.  The adhesive isn't the best, so I add a dab of superglue before applying.  Afterwards I hit the base of the grass with a brown wash to blend it in.

The next group of models is the (proto-)Shoggoths.  The one on the far right is a Gravewailer from Reaper.  I tend to focus on claustrophobic conditions when building terrain.  This model has a much smaller footprint than the Formless Thing (middle), so it should be easier to maneuver.

The Formless Thing is probably my favorite model in this group.  The recipe for painting is very simple.  The bulk of the model is a dark grey, with a gloss black wash to make it look somewhat gelatinous.  The eyes are white with a thick, mucus-green gloss coat.  The mouths are dark red and bone with a matte black wash, to make them stand out a bit from the "skin".

On the right is the full Shoggoth, which I keep referring to in my head as the "flipper baby".  This particular model reminds me of Studio Ghibli monsters, such as No-Face from Spirited Away or the wizard henchmen from Howl's Moving Castle.
