Su-35's Aerial Gymnastics - We're Gonna Need New Rules
« on: July 21, 2017, 01:17:31 AM »
Wow, this is just incredible aerial footage of a Sukhoi F-35 performing aerial gymnastics at an air show.

I've seen some impressive stuff before, but this takes the cake, in terms of aerial maneuverability at low speed.  I've seen many jets performing cobra maneuvers, and some even tumbling end over end in place, but this pilot is  also doing aerial cartwheels and fluttering-petal like maneuvers, where the jet turns fairly quickly in place while in a flat spin, and then is able to safely recover from that attitude, at low altitude:

Clearly, any Cold War, or ultramodern gamers are going to need a new set of aerial rules for these maneuvers, when in a close-in knife fight with these superb aircraft.

It seems to be able to do a complete summersault in about 5 - 6 seconds, or 60 - 70 degrees change in heading per second, and takes about 8 seconds to rotate in place in a flat spin, so about 45 degrees per second of heading change using that maneuver.

Getting low and slow usually means death to the pilot(s) using that tactic, but perhaps with these new, radical maneuver abilities, that will rewrite the aerial combat rulebook, since the ability to make such radical changes in heading to get your nose on the target for a gun attack, or a close-in missile launch might just be worth it, if you get the first shot off, before your opponent knows what is happening.

No one is going to be able to complete instantaneous or sustained turns with that speed, using traditional maneuvers.

I suspect few jets, and/or pilots will be able to match such radical maneuvers.
