Old hoplites never die, they just get re-based
« on: February 07, 2020, 11:25:38 PM »
Just some photo fluff to entertain your weekend. Getting old stuff out of the way for cooler new figures.

Those are beautiful!  :-*  You’ve got a wonderful variety of poses and the paint colors you chose are perfect.  I bookmarked your site.  Definitely want to go back and absorb more content and eye candy.
Hail to the King, baby.

Beautiful as always!

May I ask how/why these are being re-based?  (I followed the link but it did not specifically state.)

I had about eight of these on 4x4 Swordpoint bases, I decided to put them with 10 single based ones to make a unit of 18 for a Lion's Rampant variant that I am goofing around with.

Very nice. I too have done similar, though with far fewer Hoplites.
Two units, of twenty, started 'life' as amongst the first metal figures I ever owned (Mid 1960s!)
and have been based, & re-based now four times.  I must admit that with my increased use
of skirmish games, i have been thinking of another re-base, onto pennies.
You are sooooo right.

Yep, same here. I've got a unit of Vicrix Hoplites that were going to be fettled as my elite Spartans. Now they're going to be adventurers in the kingdom of 'A Songs and Blades and FFofL'.

Great photo and thread title!

I have based mine individually so I can use them for Men of Bronze and other skirmishy systems (Broken Legions, Clash of Spears, SPQR, etc.).  However, in a pinch I can easily put them on a unit tray or similar for larger games if I want.  That gives me the versatility I expect out of 28mm minis.

I agree, although you can play skirmish  games with multi based figures.

Even in the old WAB formations if I had multi-based 3-4 wide figures I would have some ones and twos for 'change'. I found the 2x2 arrangement to be the least practical for games I actually play now as well. Movement trays and magnets or steel bases solve most issues across the board for transport and display. I tend in my old age to be clumsy so magnets allow me to not drop things as easily.

The close-ups hide the trays!

The close ups show the incredible paint work (especially the waves on the arrow apron, for instance).

Movement trays can be made to look rather like diorama bases.

Here are some various ones:

Yep I like those - I haven't done anything to these trays as yet. But I intend to dress them up a bit when I get another unit or two rebased/redone. I actually wanted to add a angled lip from the front of these to reduce some of the stair stepped look.
