Yellow and red invariably is a winning colour combo.

On the subject of regimental identification, there are plenty of units to choose from as yellow facings were common among French dragoons. Note that the Wartigny regiment (I suppose this is the one you referred to as Wentigny) was disbanded in 1698 and obviously did not serve in the WSS. Potential contenders include :

* Vérac (1710 Caylus) : served in Italy 1701-1706 and Flanders thereafter (facings either yellow or blue depending on which source you choose to believe).

* Lautrec : Italy 1701-1706, Germany and the Rhine 1707-1712.

* Fontbeausard (1704 Saint-Chamond) : Served almost exclusively in Flanders except for a couple of brief stints in Germany, including the Blenheim campaign.

* Rohan-Chabot : Flanders 1702, Germany 1703-1704 (regiment captured at Bleinheim), Flanders 1705-1710, Germany and the Rhine 1710-1713. Yellow facings unconfirmed but probable.

* Pézeux : Germany 1702-1703, Italy 1705-1706, Rhine 1707, Flanders 1708-1712

* Chastillon : Italy 1703-1706, Languedoc & Dauphiné 1707-1710, Flanders 17012, Germany 1703. Yellows facings hypothetical.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Arthur...

It would seem that French dragoons are a much deeper and more colourful subject than would first appear...
Robert Hall has a whole book on the subject... I have just ordered a copy on CD.

All the best. Aly

The dragoons are probably my favourite branch of the French army for the period : as you say, they are very colourful and yet very easy to paint due to the simple cut of their uniforms and the uncluttered nature of their  equipment. And not all of them wore red : you'll find regiments in yellow lined red (Lesparre from 1706) and blue lined white (Bretagne) as well.

The Hall CD/booklet is an excellent resource : it's not the be-all and end-all of research on the subject as there are many regiments for which uniform details are still unknown, but it does a very good job of summing up everything that's currently known about French dragoon uniforms.

You achieved a nice violet and it looks like real cloth, well done!
Personally I like the third picture, as the gun is shown in full splendour with its brick red!

I am really enjoying your beautiful work as I am putting together 4 NYW armies for HOTT. Please keep posting updates as you add new regiments.

Also, any sources or suggestions for general's uniforms? More specifically looking for Major general's uniforms for France, Holland, Hesse Kassel and Hanover.

Thank you once again for your kind comments...
Terry... to be honest I have yet to consider how to do the ‘staff’... I normally leave this to the end of a project.
Although I do suspect that there was a lot of personalisation involved.

All the best.  Aly
