Is a valid build a Junker with a MG on Swing Mount [L] and another one [R]? And then add to the driver or gunner(s?) skill for the last $100?

I have a 1st Corps Austin armoured car that needs apainting.

Yup that looks about right. Should be $900 all up for the junker & equipment - assuming you're going with typical $1000 build. Could buy some extra armour somewhere?

Yours look like this?

Um, doesn't armour take up hard points?

Austin 3rd series (that's a photo of the first series - close enough):

From 1st Corps' range of WWI vehicles:

More info on them here:

A lot of WWI and interwar stuff would suit for this.

Yup takes up hard points, change swing mounts to pintle mounts? side-facing machine guns are gonna give you a decent field of fire, already (just not forward and rear). Gives you two hard points - armour for front and rear? Depends on your tactics... you'll have less field of fire, but you'll have a bit more protection. Reckon you'll have enemy to the front and back of you? Or to your sides?

Played Car Wars earlier in the year. First game, after being rammed, one of the players (flipped onto his side) wished he had roof and floor armour lol

What size board does one need for these pretty vehicles?

We normally use a 3'x3' table, but occasionally go bigger if we're doing a special scenario.

For 28mm scale cars, like the Eureka ones, Maximillian1934 needs a 6 ft by 4ft table - otherwise it gets too crowded for us to be able to scream around the table.

We do allow cars to come off the table, they miss a turn and then come back on in the same area - I've played too many games like Wings of War where I get a bit too overexcited and fly off the table before I get to do anything...  ;)

We have played with matchbox cars, btw - turning template/rules work just as well. Not as much fun in terms of look/modelling etc, but it does mean you can scale down the size of the table.

With Death Race, for example, things can get overcrowded on the table...

@Scurv - Yeah, we actually wrote a scenario like this for Wargames Ill a few years ago, related to our Back of Beyond gaming. Terrain etc moved along while the cars and the train remained relatively stationary. It became a matter of avoiding the terrain! This, was in turn, based on Alan Harrison's ideas for a russian ww2 Aerosani (propellor-driven snowmobile) game - which he ran at a Little Wars Melb when it was still at Club Tivoli.

At Salute 2016 Wargames Illustrated had a Mad Max game with similar mechanics. Everyone loved it!

I think we just didn't have time to think the mechanics through properly - and we were afraid that the 'thing' about our game (the turning template) would be made redundant in a game where you're pretty much going straight ahead. I think there's ways around that, though... i.e reducing turns when going at high speeds etc. We'll probably return to it when we do the campaign/supplement to Maximillian, I reckon it's too good an idea not to pursue further.

Sounds good! If you're at Cancon next year, keep an eye out for us - we're coming up to it. I think t'others are playing a 30YW campaign - and I'll be playing in the Tribal (our other Mana Press game) tournament (if it gets enough players!).

The Tribal tournament is being run on the first day (Friday), so I'll be free on the following couple of days - would be happy to have a game or two of Maximillian with punters.

Judging by the participants costumes, it seems there was more than a tip of the hat to Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Who can resist a participation game that features drag queens? I'll bet you were up all night sewing those outfits. :)

I never realized the overlap between the classic max movies and Priscilla, not sure I can look at either the same way again!  lol

werekake - you guys planning on doing merchandise? I'd wear a black tee with the cover art or 'The Fury Road' movie poster on it.
