Conan Boardgame Figures - the last figures from the box
« on: September 10, 2017, 03:58:14 PM »
Know, O Prince, that many years ago in an age now nearly forgotten I read many of the books by Robert E Howard and others of the Adventures of Conan the Barbarian.  Then more recently my son and daughter-in-law gave me a Kindle with the novels pre-loaded and I read them again!  Also that Christmas I was given "Conan, The ultimate Guide to the World's Most Savage Barbarian" by Roy Thomas.  Not long after that I was able to secure the models from the kickstarter.

Now I have the figures and scenarios.  Our grandchildren found the rules in the boxes a bit complex so we now use a slightly modified version of CROM! by Matakishi instead.

So on to some of the figures;
Conan in many guises

Other Characters

Fantastic job A!

My favourite?  You've painted the shield on the Spartan so that it just "pops" - an amazing 3D effect!

I look forward to seeing how you get on with the other couple of hundred minis in the box!

Cheers,

Derek

Thaug (I think I'll cut the tentacles off the bases and mound on clear sheet)

The Heroes' eye view

Thog - Since Thog lived underground for centuries I wanted a sort of faded, jaded look

And Thak

I have had a productive few weeks as far as painting miniatures go.  First up some more figures from the Conan Board Game:

Bossonian Infantry

The Bold Bossonian Captain

Crossbowmen

Two versions of Belit and also her pirate crew

Pirate characters

The Picts (with a few added cloaks)

Pirates

Nice, really effective mix of colours. (I can't tell SWMBO how quickly some have managed to paint their Conan stash.)

Great work. I'm only halfway through one of the Conan figures and am fed up with the material they're cast in. Just hate it :(

For those of us without the game, can you say why you dislike the material? Is it cheap plastic or something? Dadlamassu, cracking job on your collection!

Once our grandsons saw them on the work desk I had to get a move on.  That said, I use a fairly quick painting method that gives a decent effect from a distance but not so good close up.
using the Bossonians as an example:
Stand the figures in ranks on the work surface with each rank having a few halberdiers an archer and an axeman
Set aside the colours common to all figures - metals for chain mail, plate, leather, arrows, flesh etc.
Select the main tunic colour for each rank and stand the pot at the end of the rank.
Select the wash colours for the flesh and uniforms

Block in all the main colours by rank,
Paint the details by rank - lips, hair, belts, quivers, weapons etc
Wash the flesh tones with brown
Wash the figure with darker brown or black (avoiding the flesh areas)
Drybrush
Draw in eyes with a pen
Varnish

Characters get a similar but more individual treatment.

On monsters and creatures I select a few colours and quite often work "wet in wet" on the model to get the effect I want - or get surprised by an effect and keep it (Happy Accident).

That way the boys and I get our figures on the wargame table very quickly.  Our objective is to play the game not produce works of art.

LOVE the dried skin on the mummies!

You've painted them - and the skellies - up brilliantly A.

Now of course, I'm looking at Conan sets again on Fleabay...

I am really happy with them too.  I deiberately chose faded colours or added "Linen" or "Pale Sand" paint to the mix to take the brightness off and "fade" the colour.  The Mummified skin I painted grey with some blue added, washed with dark brown or a dark grey/black mix then dry brushed with pale brown and linen.  They are based on the mummy of Rameses I saw in the Cairo Museum like this:

Wow, that is quite the workload. You've made great headway there. Keep it up. The scenery you put the minis with really brings out the Conan vibe much more.
