Uniform Colors for Austrian-Hungarian Infantry?
« on: September 22, 2017, 06:02:23 PM »
Anyone have a good Vallejo color?  Or even Citadel?

Looks like two options - a sky blue or a stone color.

Does anyone know when to use which?

I ordered the Osprey books but they won't arrive for a few weeks.  I'd like to read your ideas (and eat some Schnitzel while I'm waiting...).

What scale figures are you planning on painting, as this will affect the colour choice?

They started the war in "Pike-Grey" which was a sort of blue-grey. In 1915 they switched to "Field-Green" which was more of a grey-green.

So any later-war figures (such as guys in steel helmets) will likely be in the latter colour. Problems with supply towards the end of the war meant this later colour differed wildly and could be anything from grey to green to brown.

I posted numerous links in a thread on exactly this question a few months ago.

Search up that thread or simply Google Austrian world war one, or something along those lines.

Hi Robert. They are 28mm from Renegade.  Very nice, hefty little guys.

They are good figures to paint, Erik. Good definition, especially for the equipment. I use Citadel paints for early war Austro-Hungarians FWIIW. A base of Thunderhawk Blue, with a good wash using Drakenhof Nightshade. Redo with Thunderhawk Blue on the more raised areas, leaving the creases and folds with the wash effect. Then layer with Russ Grey. A final highlight with Fenrisian Grey.

Thanks, Robert!

I never would have put together that color combination.  I don't have most of those colors in GW.

I'll give it a go.

Foundry do a triad called Late War German Fieldgrey. It has the number 78 and in my humble opinion matches the austro-hungarian blue-grey very well.
