Mulp'n'pulp, a new dawn in 28mm
« on: October 01, 2017, 01:30:48 PM »
I've been running out of steam in my modern pulp (mulp) project in 35mm. I found it increasingly difficult to source suitable miniatures I liked, and whilst I enjoy sculpting and converting, I realised I can't build everything from scratch. Thus, I'm back to 28mm.

I've been eyeing Hasslefree minis for a while but never placed an order as they're on the small side of modern 28mm minis. Recently, I took the plunge and put in a large order. The minis are even better than I expected, full of character, yet restrained and believable. Despite being tiny and relatively realistically proportioned (with the exception of huge hands), I found them surprisingly easy to paint.

Anyway, here are the first six.

Welcome back to 28mm! And with a great selection of minis and a very nice brushwork BTW!  :-*

Looking good!

I agree about Kev's small scale. I have bough a few women sculpts, as they can be small and still fit with 32mm figures.

Nice choice, because Hasslefree women are gorgeous!  :-*

Some of their modern male troopers may mix OK with Empress, Spectre and Eureka as well:

Yeah, it was Hasslefree which first tempted me out of fantasy and historical miniatures and into the modern era. While I find most of their women can fall into the 'top-heavy' category, there is a greater range in body shapes (men and women) than can be found with most other companies. The attention to anatomy is superb, the faces are a joy to paint (characterful and distinct from each other, as opposed to feeling like a sculptor has gone with a tried-and-tested formula to produce something a recognisable face), and their casting quality is probably the best of any independent company from which I've purchased anything.

I like the subtle skin tones on your first batch, and some lovely muted grey-blues on those cargoes in the bottom row. Great stuff!

Thanks everyone for the feedback and comments. It's good to know that Empress and Spectre are fully compatible with Hasslefree. I would have assumed them to be quite a bit bigger.

Here's another batch of three pretty random characters!

Thanks Dave, this batch is all from Hasslefree, and the next ones in the paint queue will be Hasslefree minis too. That said, I'll diversify soon again and there will be minis from other manufacturer on show on the thread, including some Pulp Alley ones.

I'm also currently finishing some bits and bobs. I added some markings to my Grey aliens, which were shown on the 35mm modern pulp thread. I might show them here at a later stage, when I can take pictures with a decent light. That said, I've done the last member of the league Grey Alien league: Grum'Pi. I've included him in the league character cards (I will probably replace the pictures on the cards for the other ones at some stage).

I've been snowed under with work over the last couple of weeks, but today I eventually managed to find some hobby time. This allowed me to another batch of three random minis. I painted the one in the middle with old GW inks (except for the skin and gun). I had completely forgotten what a pain in the neck the GW inks could be!

I also found some cars, which are sold as 1/55.  I quite like them but I'm still unsure whether I will use them essentially as is, or whether I shouldl re-paint them.

That's a fantastic collection - really like the flat effect you've achived.

Thanks for the nice feedback

Something a bit different for a change, more pulpy and less mulpy.

I found these Statuesque miniatures interesting. The proportions are unusual (with small hands and big feet), and the style is generally quite unique. They are not the easiest to paint, at least with my technique (or lack thereof). I found the large flat surfaces intimidating and challenging to paint, but I'm reasonably pleased with the end result. It helps that the casting is essentially flawless.
