Rogue One Rebel Pathfinders/Marines?
« on: October 02, 2017, 04:51:28 PM »
Hi all,

I know there were mixed responses here to Rogue One, but for my part, I loved it. I really enjoyed getting to see Rebel soldiers in action, especially in the battle for Scarif. I really enjoyed the hodge-podge aesthetics of their uniforms and gear, which seemed very appropriate for their role and circumstances and still tied in to the appearance of the Rebels we see in Empire and RoJ.

So, naturally (this is a miniatures wargaming site, I believe), I am trying to work out how to make some of my own for my collection in the 28mm-30mm range, so that the fit well with what I already have. The most obvious choices seem to be:

1). Modifying some bendy WOTC rebels. I have quite a few of these, but they are already painted up in respective Hoth and Endor paint schemes, and I am loath to buy more at this point.

2). Getting the new FFG Legion game and painting up the rebels therein appropriately. Probably my least favorite option. The figures look suburb, but in addition to being really expensive, they would still require conversion work to look more like the Scarif rebels, especially in the area of headgear. And tho I am not to particular about mixing different scale figures within reason, those guys are just too freaking huge for my taste.

3). Building my own. This is probably the most attractive option to me at the moment, especially given that my bitz boxes are pretty full for now. I was thinking about using a mix of WGF/Warlord WWII American and British plastic bodies and arms, and perhaps modifying modern weapons from the WGF Survivors range. Helmets could be modified American WW2, or in some cases just sculpted onto bare heads.

4). Convert old DDD US Iraqi War Rangers. I have a bunch of these collecting dust, mostly because I can't stand their boonie hats. The weapons and gear are a fairly close match. The heads would require the most work.

So I am thinking of maybe a combination of options 3 and 4. Any thoughts or suggestions from the learned assembly here would be much appreciated!

All the best,

Jason

Look about two or three threads down.  There is a thread about "Broken" miniatures from the Maelstrom's Edge game --- not amazing, but they look pretty suitable for Star Wars resistance fighters.

If not, mix some plasma weapons and backpacks in with some historical kits and you can probably get that look.

Ha! I totally forgot the guy out of Rizzle Kicks was in Rogue One until I looked at that picture.

Sorry, I don't have anything to contribute, really. I just like Rizzle Kicks.  :)

Elbows, those Broken Infantry sprues are pretty sweet. Nice ad hoc feel.

Pocalolo, Agis those Victoria Miniatures Acadians are pretty tempting and really lovely figures. Agis, your paint scheme is spot-on!!

VanVlak, Lowertarg, and Earther, all fitting choices. I have been tempted by those CP models figures before, but never considered them as SW Rebels. Nice.

Plynikes-now I have to scare up some Rizzle Kicks and give a listen!   lol  ;D

Thanks for the great ideas, everyone. I am feeling the inspiration flowing: keep 'em coming!

:D :D :D

Cheers!

Jason

I'd be tempted to say use some german ww2 and american Vietnam plastics and then Greeble them to within an inch of their lives!

Alot of pouches, odd backpacks, bits of wire, sculpted hats, odd bits of cloth ect ect.

The core uniform on most of these guys is covered by straps/pouches/packs ect, So you could use a generic uniformed figure and really go to town onthem! :)
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

The rebel blasters from Empire Strikes Back were modified Stg-44s

So easy enough to get some Warlord ones and chop off the magazines

The troopers from Rogue One gave me a Vietnam vibe more than WW2. Maybe it's just me, but that is where I'd start.

Are there any plastic Vietnam lines out there anywhere?

I am looking at the new Anvil Industries PMC/Militia for troops to face my Orbital Fusiliers.

In the interim, here are some Warlord US with Wargames Factory M16s.

Now what would be nice is if Anvil did the Mediaeval helmet heads with open faces.
