Thanks.

The M1 used the venerable ROF L7 105mm gun, the M1A1 uses the Rhinemetal 120mm smoothbore.

yeah but they're theoretically both supposed to be M1A1s, mounting the aforementioned 120mm gun - as you can tell from the prominent bore-evacuators mid-way down the barrels of both weapons. Hence, I guess, my confusion at the cannons being different lengths and suppositions that it's to do with a slightly different turret-make or longer housing.

Or, perhaps, somewhat different interpretations of dimensions between model-makers - it's previously been observed in some online reviews if I recall that the Zvezda WWII kits can wind up with more 'realistic' proportions whilst the Battlefront offerings apparently go for vaguely more 'caricature-esque' or 'cartoonish' appearancces.

Looking good though.

I used this technique:

To break up the slightly different shapes of my Abrams (without the flock as I used medical gauze).

Churr. Good tip. I even think I have some dental gauze and such sitting around from a recent wisdom tooth extraction :P

Now I just need to actually nail down some  good resources for unit numbering etc. for my Americans, and we'll be away laughing! [found a good one for the SOviets over at the excellent Cold War Gamer resource - http://coldwargamer.blogspot.co.nz/ ]

Interesting method, how did it turn out?

I need to take photos. I used the Zvezda ones in October last year in a few games and the Battlefront ones have been lying around in black undercoat for several months. :/

Somewhere I have a Vanguard book on the Abrams (I do mean Vanguard, not New Vanguard).

The circular thing on the turret roof is shown on the M1A1 drawing in the George Bradford Cold War AFV book. There is not a drawing of the M1 in there.
