Silent Butte (FfOL): UD 29/5 a very small game
« on: November 14, 2017, 03:04:57 PM »
http://Yep, I know, FfOL is a fun game best played with like-minded friends.  :D

However, has anyone put together or otherwise played a solo mechanism?

Sorry Silent, I meant to respond yesterday and promptly forgot! The truth is I don't have much experience playing the game (invitation for anybody else to chime in!) but I don't think the system will work very well for solo play. The tactical use of your hand of cards is a big part of the game; doing away with it, or just playing the opposition's cards in a competitive way, kind of guts the game, at least in my opinion.

A game with a more traditional card activation system might work better. Loads of good free sets online. There is also Six Gun Sound by Two Hour Wargames - great for solo play, though it has a low figure count. (One of the nice things about FFoL is that it handles large numbers of figures - at least for Old West skirmish - pretty easily. If you like somewhat bigger games, see if you can get your hands  on Legends of the Old West. Or again, check out freewargames rules - loads of good sets there.)

Hope this helps!  :D

Hi S.I. the same as Arundel if you are looking for solo mechanisms I would suggest you look at six gun sound blaze of glory which is the 2nd or 3rd edition. I believe it is out of print waiting on a new revision but you might be able to pick up something from the net, or ask Ed at 2 hour wargames if he will let you have them.

Depending on what you are looking to do it has rules designed specifically for solo game play, the core rules are similar in all the rule sets and so you could try Chain Reaction a free introductory set to get a feel for the game rules. I would think that they might play in a similar manner to the game you posted set in Vietnam. You react to things that the game system does and it reacts to you.

The main element of the pay for rules are the campaign systems which are very comprehensive and are designed for solo play.

http://s1.zetaboards.com/Post_Apoc_Wargames/topic/4808232/1/#new this is a link to a game posted by Legionaire on this forum it is the 1st instalment of a 6 part campaign and will give you a feel for how the campaign and rules work and a good read as well. I have the other 5 if they interest you.

Sorry I can not help with your original question re FfOL but you could P.M. Jay and ask him.

Cheers

Sorry for the late reply. I agree with Arundel. "The tactical use of your hand of cards is a big part of the game; doing away with it, or just playing the opposition's cards in a competitive way, kind of guts the game, at least in my opinion. "
Also, the game is really scenario driven (although the classic Deathmatch works great), which doesn't, in my opinion, work great for solo treatment.

Thanks Jay.  :D I really like the card-mechanism so well done on a great set of rules.

I do quite like the idea of an automaton non-player force (did anyone say Westworld?) which wouldn’t necessarily be driven by the card deck.

Thanks everyone for the help.

BaronVonJ has pointed me towards the scenario book with its Weird section (that includes Revenants).  8)

In reality, it’s rules for a Non Player Force, so not necessarily solo (yes, I know I said solo in the title but it was shorter)  :D
