I think Arundel is right, Steve. When you want to play solo use the games from TwoHourWargames. We tried them with 4 guys and only one had fun. The rest had more fun with pizza and beer. After 0laying it I think American players are very sad, because their companions are one state and 1500 miles away...

I would recommend SnS for solo play as it works quite well - but that's another $20-30 investment in a new rules set, and may not scratch the same itch as FFOL.  You're also in the UK and shipping physical materials there is tough if you opted for the normal printed stuff.

I'm not sure what other Old West games I've played are really solo-friendly.

Thanks Elbows. Your advice is appreciated though I’m going to try the FFOL Weird Rules before I buy anymore sets.  :)

And I’ve actually painted some minis*:

*terrain will be a few special pieces plus my Peninsular War (Iberia) terrain.

Yes, they're lovely! I really admire your use of colour. Keep up the great work, and when you fit in a game let us know how it goes!

Thanks all  :D

I have more cowboys/girls coming - thought I’d also try some by Knuckleduster (the above being mostly Artizan). At some point I guess I ought do the mounted alternates. And thus the project grows.... lol

Love those figures. I think I have most of them but you reminded me that I have had my eye on the Ely Fergus figure for a while.

I was thinking about the solo FoL perspective and I think everyone is right about the difficulties it creates. It's a brilliant group game but it is hard to think how to replicate sensible choices, etc. I think you could do it though if you took a dungeon crawl type approach. If you had the right scenario you could have locations and people trigger responses, perhaps with a Black Ops sentry type mechanism?

Thanks folks.

The first game will be from the FFOL scenario book, which has a cantina, a privy and a corral at its centre. I’ll change the scenario slightly to use the FFOL weird (revenant) Rules to play the crowd/opposition. Will see how it works out!

Btw, in building the cantina I’m being guided by the Adobe Master otherwise known as fellow-LAFer Malamute. Though I suspect that all who have posted already know this, but anyone contemplating an adobe build really should check out his recent Presido thread here on LAF and the collection of images on his Boothill Miniatures website:

I did have a go at converting some plastics but the results were way off. Horrific, even. That said, 10 of the 12 above are converted metals (the first metals I’ve worked on in ages, and how I wished they were plastic  lol)

Can't believe that Steve  :)
By the way, will your cantina build have a lift off roof and allow you to be able to move minis around inside ?

Honestly, they were horrible.  lol

The Cantina won’t gave an accessible interior. I’m now basing on 25s (it started with the Peninsular War Project, so I blame Nick) rather than 20s, which to my mind requires a bigger internal footprint whereas I prefer a smaller external footprint on the tabletop. What I might do at some later stage is make a separate internal model for use alongside the main table, not for every building but for the key ones. Maybe.  :D
