Painting the Copplestone Mad Baron - help needed
« on: November 15, 2017, 09:34:04 AM »
I am hoping someone can help me with advice on painting the Copplestone Mad Baron figure.

I have seen some painted examples online which show him in a dark (wine?) red tunic with blue breeches and fair hair.  B+W photos seem to suggest his hair was brown, so I am assuming the blond mop is artistic license but am less sure about the uniform.

I am no expert on cavalry uniforms of the period, but from what I have seen I suspect that blue breeches were used by some Tsarist cavalry regiments pre-Revolution and it is feasible he liked those enough to keep wearing them!  No doubt he also had outfits in a number of different styles and colours, but I have no clear idea how best to paint the Copplestone model with a nod towards realism.

Can anyone help please?

Realism schmealism.

I think if you stick with some historically accurate breeches, and brownish blondish hair then you are golden.

He's a "mad baron" afterall. His eccentricity could be any type of military jacket that suits his fancy.

At least thats how I'll paint him one day...
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

Ha! I only want a nod in the direction of schmealism, given that the type of tunic he is wearing was determined by Mr Copplestone, and I have no intention of reaching for the green stuff and trying to model Asiatic robes or other exotic apparel befitting a (reportedly) despotic madman who could wear whatever he damn well liked! :D

The figure corresponds to a description, I do not remember who, describing he in Siberia, dressed in red pants blue trousers. It does not seem to me that the type of jacket and pants is specified, I think those invented by Copplestone.

Thanks Constanzo. I look forward to seeing a picture of your work when you add the Baron to your army!

Alas, this figure has nothing to do with reality. During his service at the Ataman Semyonov Ungern wore an ordinary Cossack uniform. Later - Chinese and Mongolian clothes.

He's described as blonde with a reddish moustache and wearing a red silk Mongolian coat in Ferdinand Ossendowski’s Beasts, Men, and Gods
