Very cool - I'm waiting for the 3mm Orks before taking the plunge on those. Yours look great. For what it's worth I find that for small scales dappling that vallejo sand stuff with water helps to 'flatten' it, which is helpful sometimes.

Note that each company is a different shade of the general teal pattern (with the elites being black and red). There is also a GZG 6mm combat walker in their masquerading as a knight.

Very impressive stuff Macunaima. Any chance of a close up on the knight (I am using 6mm Gladiators for them but alternative patterns would be nice). Also, what ruleset are you intending to use? I was going to mod future war commander.

You are definately right about the water. It is a bit of a battle between creating a smooth surface and creating dunes. Adding water helps create smoothness but too much and dunes do not form. I'll try adding more water to flat sections and keep the dunes the same.

OK, here are two Ground Zero walkers next to a Vanguard dreadnought. The Fat Boy walker was modded in an odd way. I cut its right arm off at the elbow, flipped it over, added some plastic tubing and greeblies in order to give it a bigger gun that the Star Trek-like phaser it originally had. I am very happy with result.

Love the use of the staple bunches.  Really inspired.  8)

Two stands of heavy weapons. After much deliberation I went with 50mm bases despite only having 9 models per base. It allowed them to spread out more lengthwise.

A full company except for the command staff and transports. 4 platoons and 1 heavy weapon platoon split across two bases.

A company of Siege armour, minus the command staff. I am taking Siege armour as having half sized platoons. Also on 50mm to allow them to spread out more.

They look good spread out. It accentuates the scale and adds realism.

Your legion looks spectacular! 3mm certainly seems a great scale to do this sort of thing in. If GW would do a 3mm-10mm Epic game again I'd be all over it, it's just far more practical than 28mm for those grand clashes!

One nearly complete 3mm Sons of Horus army.

3 Infantry Companies, each with five platoons (each heavy weapon platoon is split across two bases so each company has six infantry bases) and transport.

1 Heavy Infantry Company with three platoons and transport.

1 incomplete Armour Company with two platoons.

1 incomplete Heavy Armour Company with two platoons plus a command vehicle.

Some command stands.

Wow...great thread!

3mm looks ideal...those larger bases allowing for a more realistic formation.

Yep, I had a lot of fun deciding how big each platoon should be and then trying to model each platoon as though all the individual fire teams were acting in some sort of unison (i.e. some advancing and others providing supporting fire).
