Jagannath's Old West - Now with 28mm!
« on: November 19, 2017, 06:03:38 PM »
...well, 18mm

Not certain this'll blossom into a project but I gave this chap a go today - from the Blue Moon 18mm old west range.

I've been steadily moving more and more away from using washes to blending, so set myself a challenge to only paint this project up without washes. He's OK, not contrasty enough though I don't think - next time I'll mix the shade up deeper. The photo does seem to have flattened the contrast a bit too.

I'm not also not convinced that the Blue Moon range is actually that good - the sculpts are quite 'realistic' which I'm not sure 15mm benefits from... the detail is fairly shallow. Definitely not a patch on the, frankly incredible, Three Musketeers range.

Still, I've got a few more primed to play with when I'm not painting other stuff...

Thanks very much - I've been looking a lot at Heresy Brush's painting recently http://www.heresybrush.com/ especially this excellent stuff he did for khurasan:

and this for Totentanz

so I've been trying to bring of that into my painting - seems to be he uses slightly odd colours to mix the shade tone (that blue cossack's coat seems to be almost green/brown in the shade tone) and it's quite contrasty - so I need to push that contrast on my next one.

Here's another one tonight - again, totally wash free. Much happier with him - he much more contrasty than the previous one. I've decided that I do like the sculpts in and of themselves, but they aren't really sculpted with painting in mind. I've compared him to some xyston civilians I've got on the painting desk at the moment and the civilians are so much better painted, and seemed so much easier - much nicer detail to paint. Still, I've primed the 4 other banditos in this pack because they're pretty cool so I'll see where they take me.

I should add that the camera has washed him a fair bit - he's got more tonal variation in the flesh.

Really good work.

I used some washes on mine. They work but I'm far from an expert painter...

Ah thanks matey - that's good to know. Gamecraft are US based which is a bit trickier but I'll bear them in mind.

Yours look great! I do usually use washes (90% of the stuff on my sci-fi blog is painted with the classic 'midtone-wash-midtone-highlight') but I've wanted to try and mimic Heresy Brush for ages, and a new project is a good excuse!

Please to keep in mind that very few people indeed expect the same level of painting in 18 mm as some achieve in the larger figures.  Your paint jobs are fine.  And keep going - it is a great size to work with.  You can even develop a proper sized town.  Might be a challenge with your conditions, however.  I try to always keep in mind that, in the end, it is just a game with the purpose of having fun.

Thanks - one actually been painting 15s for quite a long time, here's my Sci Fi thread

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=74920.0

But there's something about these sculpts that seems particularly challenging!

I have to say nice as these gunfighters are - I prefer your 'sci-fi' style and the work you've done on your fantasy thread http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=102905.msg1277734#msg1277734 ;)

Which ever style you stick with, the minis look great!  :D

Ah thanks very much - me too, I think in all honesty but I'm not entirely certain whether that' the style or the sculpts... to be fair I should probably do a bit of experimenting. The cowboys haven't had the thick gloss then matte that everything else gets (which helps to even out the blends and style a bit). Still, it's refreshing to challenge myself and try a few things.

Evening all,

I've been painting a few other bits recently, but I've also been feeling (as I do occasionally) the call of 28mm.

Rather than buy anything, I've resolved to paint a few 28s to remind myself why I don't do it often, and with that in mind it seemed like a good chance to experiment.

I've been trying to improve my colour theory recently - I know a little, but don't really apply that thought process to my painting. I'm resolved to paint these 28mm cowboys in a cold, gothic palette - with half an eye on treating myself to those zombie cowboys from Artizan and going a bit gothic horror.

Here's a WIP of the first chap - he's a little bit muddy, and the pic has killed at least a layer of highlighting, but you get the idea. I'm not sure whether this works that well, but I'll stick at it for now.

Great paintjob, Jagannath! I sometimes try to paint 28mm, but I prefer 15mm every day.
