The Battle of Giniss 1885
« on: November 23, 2017, 11:21:11 PM »
Greetings

A couple of weeks ago our lovely friends from Hamburg popped over to the Nottingham Lead Belt for a weekend of wagames food and drink...

The lovely Michael Perry hosted A Sudan game for us all on the Saturday.
I have at last found time to post an almost truthful account on my blog...

An alternative version can be found on The Perry Miniatures Facebook page.

And Frank Becker's blog.

Sudan goodness! Great stuff!  :-*

Thank you for the kind comments...
I take no credit for the lovely toys and terrain, that is the work of Michael Perry and a host of talented figure painters...

The dice throwing was all my own and a bit better than usual this time... or was it that Franks was just worse  :D...

The big problem with such a fun game is that my wargames butterfly is now eyeing up that box of plastic Ansar that I have had on the shelf for ages... lol

All the best.  Aly

Eric, if you’re looking for OOBs for the Sudan, and a lot of other useful stuff, get the 2-volume Mahdist Wars Source Books from TVAG- very useful

I am not sure what Michael did but there is a very complete order of battle in Go Strong Into the Desert by Lt. Col Mike Snook...

This is the OOB that Michael used for his game...

I hope this is of some help...

1st Brigade: 1st Berkshire, 1st West Kent, 2nd Durham Lt inf, small Egyptian escort for artillery, 2x Egyptian Krup guns.
2nd Brigade: 1st Batt Yorkshire, 1st Egyptian Batt, 1x 7pdr, 1x Gardner MG.
Fort Sortie attached to second Brigade:
1st Batt Cameron Highlanders, 1/2 9th Batt Sudanese.
In Fort Koshesh: 1x 7pdr, 1/2 Batt Sudanese.
Cavalry Brigade: 20th Hussars, Egyptian Regular Cavalry, small unit of Camel Corp.
‘Lotus’ paddle steamer off board.
Mahdists were split into 4 ‘brigades’ of Infantry ( 3 of which were divided into 4 ‘battalions’ and a unit of skirmishes and one of 3 ‘battalions’ of Nile Arabs). There was one gun that could be placed any where and one on the far side of the Nile. The cavalry ‘brigade’ was made up of 2 Camel units and units of Cavalry.

All the best  Aly
