That's a great looking command group, I like that you've positioned them so that the wind is flowing in the same direction for each mini.

Thanks Egg.  I wish I could take credit for the careful planning but I don't think it was me.  More on this and other behind the scenes commentary on my blog :D .

Nice painting on those figures.  I particularly like the way you have used the same muted palette for the figures.

I wanted the figures to flow together so there is unity in the force but hopefully gave each of them enough of their own that they still manage to have identity befitting characters.  I completed my first group of thegns and posted additional pics  HERE .  The same colours featured here again but I'm hoping they are dialed down just a bit more in frequency.  All of that steel stole much of those nice colours away.  I will be following these guys up with my first group of fyrd.  I'll use more of the neutrals/ earth tones to denote their lesser status.  I will have more space to treat them to patterns on their cloth which is the only regret that came from painting this lot.

Lovely little project and the spears look good too (even if you were thrown by them initially).

I've painted more Saxons since I last posted (And a few Irish as well) but haven't got around to taking, and shrinking photos.  I also completed a barrow that I do have a photo ready for.  I'll see about a proper update to the thread.

Thank you for the complementary reviews on the barrow.  I had a little celluclay left and wanted to use it all and made a well for a desert setting.  I had the Crusades in the back of my head when I decided to make it but a tired old well could span more than a couple eras.  The build was quick but I poured it full of expired resin and had to dredge it out.  What a mess!  It smelled like burning oranges.  I had to repaint part of the well to fix it then poured diluted gloss Modge Podge instead.  It took a couple days to dry but it came out cloud free though I was apprehensive during the whole waiting period.

Thanks WillieB!  I still have my last few Saxons to complete and a whole lot of Irish on their heels.  I've also been thinking about terrain a lot lately.  The plan is to build 2x2 modules to give me a nice 4x4 to play skirmish games on.  I'm likely to head straight for the coast because my next terrain piece will likely be a crannog for those Irish.

Ooo I like a good crannog.

Crannog weren't really a coastal thing, they were built in lakes.

Your're right egg but I think terrain lakes look terrible.  The footprint of the crannog alone would make one look even more like a wading pool.  The coast could just as easily be the edge of a large lake but I'm going to have to make some concessions to keep it versatile.  Right up there with the crannog is a viking raid on a seaside village so it will have to accommodate both.  I'm planning the crannog at around 10"  in diameter so the body of waterwill have to be more than 12" with an imaginary terminus somewhere off the board
