Late Roman Watchtower (Specula)
« on: December 13, 2017, 08:52:59 PM »
Hallo!

I always wanted a watchtower for my Late Romans since I fell in love with the one depicted in the WAB-supplement "Fall of the West". So I build my one from scratch, the ballustrade was made by Andy Slater and is available at his shop
http://www.archeotech.co.uk/products/00115-jans-ballustrade.html
The rest of the Tower is made of foamboard, woodsticks, coffee stirrers, Green Stuff und Dekofill.
Hope you like it

Jan

Darn fine job with that! Both the build and the painting!  :-*

I could imagine living in that, with a few modern amenities laid on. Nifty.

Really nice tower! The stonework appaering in some places as well as the weathering really bring this to life! Do you maybe have some pictures of the build in progress?

Thank you gents!
Unfortunatly I do not have any WIP pics. The Building process took quite a while, my first attempt creating the stonework failed. I used cheap airdrying Clay for Kids, and it all crumbled and broke of. The ballustrade and the roof were not that easy to build too. I considered smashing the whole thing against a wall more than once.
But, in the end, I am quite pleased with my tower. The next thing I would like to make is a Roman Villa rustica.

An excellent build but your painting has really brought it to life.

I'm curious about the door half way up the wall, did they use a ladder for access?

They used a ladder indeed. Just drag the ladder inside, shut the door...safe  :D
Here you can see what it looked like inside

Cheers - An inspiring picture. You've got a good likeness to it with your build.
