Chechyna war 28mm massive battle

The first Chechen war between 1994 and 1996 led to a humiliating defeat for the Russian army
and then-Pres. Boris Yeltsin. Many soldiers — underpaid and badly treated by their superiors—
saw the restive mountain republic as not worth dying for.

The Russian experience in Afghanistan was still fresh. But military leaders forgot or deliberately
ignored the war’s counter-insurgency lessons.Chechens who fought against the Russian army
were sometimes former Soviet soldiers, including Dzhokhar Dudayev— the young republic’s first
post-Soviet leader.Others were police officers and civilians with no prior combat training.
They carried small arms, light weapons and had few heavy artillery. They had no air force.

Both sides resorted to brutality, torture and arbitrary executions. Chechen terrorists targeted
civilians in Russia, and Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin extended a hand to pliable Chechen leaders.
The Kremlin’s focus on enlisting collaborators proved decisive, and defections from the Chechen
side rose exponentially. Two clans that had fought the Russians in 1994— the Yamadayevs and
Kadyrovs— struck a bargain with Moscow in 1999.

Russian troops overran Grozny. After 2000, the war evolved into an insurgency.

Your work on your ruined city is spectacular! I think anyone would love to game on such an evocative board.

I think this scale of gaming would be perfect for insurgency type actions. If I wasn't so focused on building forces for 20th century Africa, I'd be tempted to use this for my own Wars of Insurgency rules!

Thanks for posting -- I am definitely going to your site to admire your terrain some more... :-*

Others were police officers and civilians with no prior combat training.

Quite a controversial statement. All Soviet male citizens, if they did not have medical contra-indications, had to serve in the army for two years and have a military specialty. Or, if they had a higher education, they were trained in a higher educational institution in the military department and had the training of a junior officer.
There is a good article about the armed forces, uniforms and weapons of the Chechen separatists. In Russian - it is available here:

I recommend using Google translator for reading.

I think the main failure from what I have read up on so far was poor tactics which saw the failed assaults etc, frontal assaults, lack of urban warfare tactics, an army in decline owing to the end of the Soviet union (coupled with financial issues) and a failure to learn the hard won lessons in Afghanistan.

It did see use of paramilitaries in the combat zone but these are not what we in the west would think of. Great Osprey which discusses the many and varied paramilitaries such as MVD and OMON. It is something that is not widely known or appreciated.

This is a great intro https://www.amazon.com/Russias-Chechnya-1994-2009-Essential-Histories/dp/1782002774/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_0/142-6679440-4299458?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=7CMJ0P2T5HQG3JFR1QM6

This is a great book which gives some interesting scenarios from the perspective of the Chechen rebels https://www.amazon.com/Fangs-Lone-Wolf-Russian-Chechen-1994-2009/dp/1909384771
