A mammoth hunt
« on: December 18, 2017, 08:42:54 PM »
Table from my initial attempt at an ice age mammoth hunt. Rules were a combo of commercial and homebrew. Not very happy with the rule results, so going to look at the Palaeo Diet set.

A good pic showing original adult models (L and R flanks) and converted/repositioned heads, necks, and trunks on center three.

Well, maybe you weren't convinced by the rules you used, but this is a spectacular-looking table!

Those mammoths are absolutely fantastic and the rocky terrain is perfect.

This looks really interesting, do you have a story to go with the pictures?

Can you tell me who makes the animals, the deer, the horses, and the mammoths, there appear to be two different calves one larger than the other!

Nice looking table, post a game when you have played PD.
Cheers

Great work on those figures and terrain, especially the mammoths. You gotta find a set of rules that gives a good game.
You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

thanks for all the pos feedback.

The game shown was one I ran at Historicon three years ago.

It was a basic hunt the beast scenario each player started with a 5-6 hunter band along with a couple of companion dogs each.

Beasts starting on table were mammoths, megaloceros, and horses. I had random events - wind change, storm/calm, earthquakes, or random animals arriving on table (aurochs, woolly rhino, wild wolf pack, elasmotherium).

Also had some apex predators (cave bears, cave lions) hidden in their lairs which were located in the rocky areas. Any figure getting within a certain range of a lair activated that predator.

Mammoths are from a variety of sources - I have four sizes to represent adults down to very young calves.

Large / adults from safari ltd, (heavily converted using GS for varied neck and truck poses)

Medium / young adults from Hobby Lobby resin christmas ornaments (stock) from about three or four years back.

Smaller baby/yearlings from safari ltd baby mammoths (stock)

Baby/infant mammoths (not shown) from mojo minis (about half the size of smallest mammoths shown above)

All mammoths have been repainted and based on custom shaped mdf.

Large deer (megaloceros) are metal figs from acheson creations

Horses are repainted zebras from mojo minis.

Dogs are old ral partha era goblin wolf rider mounts.

I'll try to get some group photos taken and posted.

Back to this particular game...I had run some playtests prior to going to the con, but made some last minute changes that weren't the best for a con game, in that they slowed down some of the turn sequence actions... I was pulled away for two long business trips in the month before the con, so didn't get as much testing in as I would have liked. Aah well, live and learn.

Thanks for the info much appreciated.

I have just bought 2 DeeZee Mammoths they are about 3" to the top of their head, do you know how the Safari ones scale to that? You have made a good job with the neck conversions on yours.

I have seen the Acheson megaloceros and they look very nice but I haven't found a UK source, I may have to go into the import business. Zebras repainted is a good idea, I will have to look at that.

Thanks again

Thanks, all.

The stock pose measures 4" to top of head, body is 3" long from root of tail to nape of neck under chin, and just shy of 3" high at hump on back. They might be a tad overscale for 28mm, but they are imposing on the table... :-)

The fact that they are some kind of plastic and are easily cut / modified is worth the slight scale discrepancy. I can't imagine effort to modify a bunch of metal models.

I use the two bellowing stock models as bulls, and the rest (all modified) as cows.

Thanks Pacarat, it sounds like they may not scale too well with the DeeZee ones, oh well

They look good against each other
Cheers
