1/72 Aircraft I've Been Working on
« on: December 24, 2017, 07:03:41 PM »
Hi Gents,

A few aircraft I've been working on.
Three SE5A's in 74th Squadron Livery.

Here is an Albatross DVa in Jasta 18, Rabens Ravens livery. This is the first of 7 aircraft I will be doing up in these colors.
Next up a Pfalz DIIIa.

The decals are all from Pheon, nice to work with. As with a number of the older kits the decals have deteriorated to a point where they are unusable.

Nice.   I don't understand your comment though.  The pheon decals have deteriorated?  Or the ones that came with the kits?

Thanks for your kind comments gents!

aphillathehun - the decals in older kits will deteriorate so much that they just fall apart. Thus I used Pheon decals for these kits, which are new.

Here is another model for use in our WW1 air game Canvas Eagles a Pfalz DIIIa, again in Jasta 18 colors. This kit is from Squadron. Not a particularly good kit, it was rather difficult to put together with some bad fit for the pieces.
I have found the same in a Roden Fokker DVII I am currently building.

This Pfalz was flown by Lt. Hans Mueller before he flew a Fokker DVII.

Thanks for the info.  Those Jasta 18 planes, both early and late, look really cool.  I've always loved the look of the SE5 also.

This made me look through the 1/72 catalog again.  It seems there is less available now than the last time I thought about getting into these in a big way.  I always thought it would be cool to start with early war and go through the war adding the planes as they come online.  For the Germans I thought I'd have to start with the Albatros, but now I see that Roden makes an eindecker which is pretty cool.  But it looks like it's hard to come by early Nieuports these days.  I'm not even sure I can get my hands on the Eduard Nieuport 17 anymore....

I’ve found kits on EBay, posting here or on Bartertown. The best place is local conventions, as they go cheap.

Forum member Dadlamassu has some WW1 aircraft kits in 1/72 amongst the items he is currently selling on behalf of his friend's family;

Funny, I was just going to post this. Bought some 1/72 WW1 Aircraft from him. They arrived Friday.

A couple of pragmatic questions for you:

- looks like you are going pilotless with your planes.  I'm not sure whether to put pilots in or not.  What were your thoughts on the tradeoff?

- I assume you attach these to flight stands.  What do you use for that - REMs?  How do you attach those to the plane?

Pilots or no pilots, a lot of models don’t provide them in kits. I don’t bother to acquire extra ones.
