Weird Vietnam
« on: December 26, 2017, 04:14:29 AM »
I have the rulebook Tour of Darkness that makes me want to
try and do some weird Vietnam type games. Monsters, zombies
and stuff. Anyone doing this? Intend to use Pulp Figures new line
Black Sun for the soldiers and VC. Any ideas for good monsters or
terrain?

Dixon make French Foreign Legion in a suitable uniform (with the sun helmet) for early forgotten legionnaires, or you could use WW2 US Marines as later French from the 1950s if you want another "lost patrol" option (you could probably use zombie heads and arms with these).
Steve Barber is producing a range of dedicated SE Asian troops which would be great for the spirit warriors, but other stand ins are available from Indian/Colonial ranges.
Blights and the Plant Men you can get from Fantasy ranges (or simple twig and tentacle conversions of VC or your US troops).
Apes, Monkeys Tigers etc from Darkest Africa ranges or use plastic toys.
Giant Spiders, leeches and Carnivorous plants from Fantasy or Horror ranges (Horrorclix etc)

As for Scenery the cheapest (and probably best) option are the resin Aquarium models.

"Tour of Darkness" is a wonderful game setting, we played it as skirmish campaign rather than using the rpg narrative. Even without the "weird" it is a great set of Vietnam rules.

robn,

Great ideas. I hadn't even thought of "Lost" French patrols from earlier periods.
Thanks.

Of from Robn's ideas, Empress miniatures makes French-indo china war French and Vietnamese paratroopers for the 1950's. With out any conversion work or any thing.
They might also make decent plantation guards or bitter ender French men for proper and weird Vietnam.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

We played a straight campaign with Tour of duty. And it was great fun. I think it was going ti get darker but ended when the DM moved away.
Have you seen the "68" graphic novels?

Yes, I have.
The 68 series was one inspiration for me.
Good stuff.

I was going to recommend you that!  lol

"Tour of Darkness" is great stuff, I've played survived a year-long campaign in 1969 the early 90s with my Brothers in Arms,  have the both the physical and mental scars! Really miss the smell of napalmed ghouls in the misty mornings!  :D

For those who are going now: just watch out that damned fish-like fiends in the Delta!  ;)

I am also looking forward to more Black Sun figures from Pulp figures.
So far they have US and VC. However, it is meant to be a weird Vietnam
game setting. I have seen "Fish Minh" but there are not up yet.

Bob is also planning a Nazi style Thule society with Lizard men.
Special Forces Kurtz with sub-human cannibals.
Charles Manson type Hippies and demons.

Can't wait.

The South Vietnamese mounted a punitive campaign against the Hòa Hảo sect in the Mekong Delta in 1956. They had their claws deep into the previous government, prompting President Diem to bring in Catholics from the North into his government*, as they could be relied on not to be tainted.

The Hòa Hảo retreated further into the Delta and closer to Cambodia, where they felt safer practising their own brand of 'Buddhism'. They can be recognised by most of them having the 'Delta Look' and U.S. personnel are advised to treat them with caution and to never get off their boat!

* One of the things the South Vietnamese people as a whole were opposed to and which led to increased support for the VC, and ultimately the U.S. shoring up Diems regime. Ergo the Cult of Dagon is responsible for the Vietnam War.

I love how you mix history with "What if...?" to make a plausible storyline.
