Speaking of which, hopefully we will have some pictures of sculpts soon. Feels like this thread has been around forever, and we've seen little but pictures from Le Petit Journal so far.

This thread has been around for not even 6 months. I don't think we need to berate Ged for his output. Building up a range takes time, so surveying the customer base is not that bad an idea.
Especially when it is not about the traditional customer base's favourite topic, re-living the empire's glorious times. This is what sells in the end.
The appropriate metaphor here is football. Many claim to like the sports, but it turns out it is about their own team winning.

The Darkest Africa playground is very successful? yes
Dixon's Dahomey range has been around for ages, and Mike Owen is one of the prolific sculptors of the hobby. I have seen figures more "aged" than those.
If it were for good figures, you would see his Chasseurs d'Afrique unit more often on the table.

No, I think it is the gaming background of the figures that sells, not their sculpting quality. The sculpting quality might be what makes the difference when there are more competitors.

Well, Ged is free to market his new range any way he wants, and I wish him every success with it, but his chosen method of continually teasing for six months without actually showing any product, not even a single green; just doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid. A five-page, six month thread about a range we still are yet to see anything of? That's kind of unprecedented. It may be intended to build anticipation, but it has the opposite effect on me. I think it would have had a bigger impact if he had waited until he had something to show. But that's just me.

No, I think it is the gaming background of the figures that sells, not their sculpting quality.

I disagree. I can't recall a poor range taking off and carving out a new fad. If Copplestone's Darkest Africa sculpts had been poor, we probably wouldn't still be playing with them today. Show me a range of dud sculpts that has sparked off a new sub-genre and I might change my mind.

your argument was that a good range always sells, no matter the topic
I argued against it, that it is the topic that sells, not the good range, and that the good range matters in competition.
If any good range would simply sell, everyone would game Mike Owen's excellent french colonial ranges, because they are good. Ever seen Artizan Chasseurs d'Afrique painted?

Now you are turning the argument around, that a bad range would never sell.
This was not my point.

but still, in the past we did have mediochre sculpted ranges that sold because of the topic. Who does still buy Old Glory 28mm?
No, they go for the new ones

As for the "teasing" - well how was the thing with the live and let live?

I don't see this as teasing - he is just focusing on the Tonkin range and testing the ground. Who can hold up against the massive Perry and Warlord output?

If you can't wait, there is still the excellent Dixon range. I thought we are grown-ups who can wait for their candy.

Ithought we are grown_ups.

Indeed, but I don't see what that has to do with anything other than being a thinly-veiled insult. Please take your own advice and act like one.

You don't see it as teasing, fine. Other people clearly do, and they are free to express that. They aren't required to fall into line with the thoughts of our old friend the mighty Shere Khan.

because I disagree with the mighty old Plynkes who has a productive comeback after so many years? ;)

I am just arguing for patience.
Ged had this pace from the start, we are not going to see a 4x6 Perry range. He goes for quality not for the mass market.

interesting input chaps...……...just to put a few things into perspective
the pace I work at is dictated by A) Being a one man band B) Having
some forward planning C)The reason for posting pictures in advance
id a simple one, IMHO it stimulates interest and encourages debate,
Tonkin is the launch pad for this era, in itself encompasses my Opium
Wars range as figures can be used for the Tonkin period.some Dahomey
sculpts will appear soon... :D 8) :-* :o
bottom line is its a fascinating Hobby and personally my input is purely
because im fascinated by this period and im unconcerned if its not a
commercial success ,but will do my best in my way
thanks for all input.. regards Ged Gringo40s

I always thought of this thread- and similar ones by other manufacturers on here- in the spirit of Ged giving us a look-see into what he is thinking of and working on.
I never thought of it as an advert and it I am sure the intention is not to deliberately tease.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Ged has over 30 figures out for the Tonkin range so he is working to get figures out. After commissioning some figures my self just the sculpting process is expensive so unless your rich this stuff takes time.

When did the general fusilier  uniform change, I love the Legionaires you have brought out so far, and hope early period line infantry uniforms will suit both campaigns?

as a good friend tells me, the uniform cut of the dress uniform is not the issue, this changed only in WW1.

There were basically two cuts, the regular with one row of buttons, the tunic, and the colonial style with two rows, the paletot. Also, there was the bourgeron in off white, kind of a garrison dress that used to be dyed in Africa. The navy, who were administtrative for all territories outside North Africa, would regulate and supply the uniforms. Duriing the end of the 19th C, the navy experimented with a lot of colours for the tropical uniform (based on the cut of the tunic), from white, over shades of blue up to the 1910 khaki.
The uniform worn in the respective territory depended very much on the climate. So the bourgeron and tunic would work for all territories (painted in the respective colour), while the paletot only as dress uniform for the troupes de marine/ troupes coloniales.
I have no clue if the paletot cut existed in tropical cloth.

The respective Osprey books by Martin Windrow are the source. I haven't read them, so might be misrepresenting hearsay.
