All,

I've always wondered why French Colonial did not get more widespread interest figure-wise, other than North Africa. I've always attributed it to "gamers only really care about Le Legion" and to hell with anything else. I've run a lot of games for my club for the lesser known French in Africa. For example, the French vs. Samori Toure is a major theatre to look into. Not a lot of info, and often if found it's in French. I have enough info for the 1892 Campaign against Samori, so stay tuned for a scenario book at some time (or possibly a series of articles in WI).

That said, the *Most* useful figures that can be made would be Tirailleurs Sénégalais as they were the major troops fighting in the various areas (and the Algerian Tirailleurs were used much more than Legion in North Africa as well). Therefore, I'm excited to see this new range (since Castaway Arts were the main company to make them initially). Great News!

Now, we need more Tonkin figures as well.  :)

Regards,
Bob

I do sometimes find it a little puzzling when people are surprised that an industry largely based in the Anglophone world can be a bit Anglo-centric at times. It seems to me to be perfectly natural and what would be expected. But still people like to berate manufacturers and seem to feel it is England's job to populate the entire wargaming world, rather than, say, bemoaning why there aren't any French manufacturers that take an interest in their own history.

Here's the secret: You make super-cool figures, people will adopt the period simply because they love those figures and want to play with them. Just look at Darkest Africa. Who could have predicted that would be a thing, and would still be a thing all these years later?

Speaking of which, hopefully we will have some pictures of sculpts soon. Feels like this thread has been around forever, and we've seen little but pictures from Le Petit Journal so far.

To be fair to the Anglophone (or Anglo-centric as Plynkes said) world, another reason for this disinterest is that most of these events are almost totally unknown by French people themselves (except those from western African origin I suppose).

I was very surprised some years ago when I found (on Gallica / BNF -French National Library- resources online website) books written by French officers and travellers of the time who took part in these events. Before that I had heard about Dahomey and Madagascar, but I had never heard about the conquest of Mali. These books reads like adventures of the same period in the Wild West, or British Africa, or Siberia...

One reason is certainly the overall attitude of French public opinion towards the country's military history and colonialism (Um I'm not giving any moral or political judgement here, just trying to analyze). There are lots of US films with cowboys Indians and cavalry, and British films where lads in red coats or khaki coats have problems with Mahdists, Boers, Zulus, and make friends with Gunga Din etc.

You don't have many such things in the French cinema, and without heroic movies (even badly-inspired...) you can't expect people to give much interest. Post-WW2 French film-makers would rather make films about WW2 and the Resistance. The war in Algeria 1954-62 probably also discouraged them to make adventure films about colonialism - a large part of the public opinion being strongly against it, and another part being sad of the loss of the colonies, there was not much other public to impress. ::)

and meharists ?
don't forget meharists
senegalese tirailleurs meharist sections ( quite active in Niger and Tchad ) and meharist suppletives ( goums ) ...
Dans les situations critiques, quand on parle avec un calibre bien en pogne, personne ne conteste plus. Y'a des statistiques là-dessus.
